My fellow soldiers, welcome home! I am very appreciative of the efforts of those who developed this site. The dates and the names bring back many memories from 2 lifetimes ago. As if the tour in Vietnam was not enough, the bombing and destruction of the World Trade Center (2/26/93 & 9/11/01) wherein I was employed, greatly added to the list of friends lost. I think of you all and hope you are well. Thanks to the trip on the USS Gordon, I will never go on a cruise. John J. Molloy, Jr. (please correct spelling of last name) Sgt. We provided vhf communications for 1/20 from Duc Pho to LZ Ross & back to LZ Thunder where the 1/20 settled in June of 68. I remember Captain Adams was the CO for A co & Captain Seketa was CO of of B or D Co. Colonel Beers was the battalion CO & Sergeant Major Lee was the top NCO. We pulled many details of perimeter patrol & watch as Col Beers reminded us we had gone to basic training & our duty was soldering first & radios second. I'm more proud of the fact that we could get MARS & provide phone calls for the guys out there. Ben Chapman, Dan Lemke, Bob McKamish was the VHF team for 1/20 most of 68. We went over on the USS Weigel.

I'm a history major doing my thesis on the post Tet period of Feb.-March 1968 and concentrating on the Americal Division's actions during this period. I'm curious as to why there is nothing on this site about the massacre that took place at Song My (My Lai) which is generally accepted as the worst atrocity or war crime the US military ever committed. On your section that details each day's actions, the March 16 entry is fairly long and detailed but again, nothing about the 500 or so Viets who were executed (and raped) by Charlie Co. Any explanation for this lack of inormation?

Webmaster's Note:  I have corresponded with this individual and have provided my "explanation" to him.
Please direct any further discussion on the subject to Mr. Swann; not to our Guest Book.  Thanks, Jim.

Attached to Charlie Company as Four Duece RTO (Sgt. Kelso) and then Forward Observer. From Sa Huyn to Mo Duc, from the sand dunes on the South China Sea to the Highlands. What a picturesque vacation! Back to the platoon on LZ Liz where I hung out with the FDC until the platoon sergeant got back from R&R and figured that the best place for a guy who had been calling in fire missions for three months would be as assistant gunner in a gun crew. Ah, memories.

My father passed away in 2000. I stumbled onto some of his paperwork when he was in the Army. I am a Soldier myself and was very curious about my father's career and found your webpage. It verified everything. He was wounded very early in his tour and he took a while to rehabilate. I was always very proud of my father and he became an example in his community til he passed but I could always tell he left something back in Vietnam. Thank you for a great web site. If any of you Officers or NCO's utilize USAA Insurance as your carrier of choice for Automobile Insurance, please read my message (shown below) to the organization's leader. I'm pissed at the service and lack of concern for members' expense.

"General Robles,

Yesterday afternoon I discovered that the rear window of my Subaru Forester had been broken sometime overnight. During my conversation with the police officer who responded to file an incident report I learned that many automobiles in our section of town had been shot with BB's.

My call to USAA was answered by your time-consuming automated directory. After pushing several buttons I received human assistance. When learning that my claim was for auto glass replacement I was transferred to a third-party administrator for USAA, Safelite Auto Glass.

They scheduled a "house call" for this morning after trying to sell me a new set of windshield wiper blades for $21.88. The weather today was damp so they contacted me and asked me to take the car to their facility for repair. I complied ... dropping shards of glass into the car and onto the roadway with every bump.

Here's my gripe. The total bill for repairs was $487.00. My portion was the deductible amount of $250.00. Their web site states a total price of $196.06 (including PA sales tax) for a "consumer, non-insurance claim". After several minutes of discussion with the manager and clerk, I was granted the price of $196.06.

Why do you allow these rip-offs to be inflicted on your members?
How much are you paying this company to administer your glass program?
Why would you not use USAA's leverage to have a fair price quoted in the first place?

By the way, when I picked-up the car, the interior had not been properly cleaned of the glass fragments and the rear windshield wiper had been installed 180 degrees out of sync.

The only good result of the whole transaction is that I saved USAA and myself some expense.

I do anticipate a prompt response from you on this issue."

Sincerely, James K. Wambold

I am the son of Capt. Dale E. Davis who served in Battalion S3 in Hawaii and Vietnam. I vividly remember Schofield Barracks - as a boy I delivered the Army Times newspaper and was allowed access to some of the mess halls to sell my extra copies. This time was to be the second of three assignments Dad had in Southeast Asia. Fortunately, he came home all three times, and ultimately retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the early 80s. Dad passed away in September 2007 after an extended illness. I thoroughly enjoyed the content of your website - found many things that brought back memories - both good and bad. Thanks for this work!

Thanks Chuck for keeping this site up to date. Want to make sure all 1/20 vets know about the Americal Reunion in Jacksonville, Florida in June 2008. I live in Jacksonville Beach and would love to see all of you. Will try and get to the 1/20 reunion in KY, thanks to Wendell. I have posted a few videos from Nam. I carried a 8mm movie camera for a while. There is one movie I took which came on a eventful day for the 1/20th, especially A company. It was Easter Sunday 1971, I got pictures of D Co's CA, but my battery went out right after we landed. I did get a 35mm shot of a f-4 dropping a 500 pounder on the hill top where A co. got hit, which is included in one of the video's. I have been communicating with guys from the 116th Aviation Unit which was our normal Huey support in 70-71. They remember Easter day and what happened. They lost a number of birds that day. As we all know A co. took great losses. I have a number of photos and movies from Nam, please contact me if you would like something or go to YouTube http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=8CBF2E0D4E59F737 There are several videos that may bring back some good memories of friends or places where we shared our life experiences? I have decided that all the bad things need to be left in the past. I don't forget them though. My best to my 1/20 brothers, we were young, naive (I was) and ...... fill in the blanks. Wolfie

Will try to go to the reunion may 28. Should have stayed in touch. Time has past and we are older but the memories are there forever, good or bad. I always amazed me how so many guys, of different race, character, religion, could pull together to do the job at hand. I walked many a mile with Seketa and have tons of memories from those days and nights of walking through the brush. If you know me, email me.

I was a medic with D Company 1st B from early 1967 to November 1968. I was part of the build up at Schofield in 1967 and shipped out to Nam before Christmas in 1967. I have pictures of Christmas decorations in Nam 1968. Although the year in Nam changed all of our lives forever, I have had a good life since. I recently found out about the reunion and plan to attend this year. A lot of guys came and went during the year but I remember many of you and would like to see or communicate with some that know or remember me. Some wrote in about CPT Seketa. I too could tell a couple of stories about my time with him in Nam. I was a senior Medic and traveled in the jungles with him and two rto men. What a time that was. Am thankful every day that I was not left behind and made it to write this.

I had the honor to serve under CPT Sekata in the S-4 section. Providing LZ and resupply support to our line companies was never dull. The S-4 operated the LZ at Bronco and it was fast and furious. I was knocked on my butt by sling loads and shocked on occasions. Delivered/picked-up supplies and equipment via Dolphin transportation. I got to see door gunners in action (especially the day that I jumped in and slipped on all the blood on the floor), My secondary MOS was 11B and there were days when I thought that my Captain reassigned me (just kidding). CPT Sekata was a Infantry Officer and he made sure that the line Comapnies received excellant logistics support so the S-4 section followed the 11B's where ever their mission took us. I remember setting up Ammo/Supply resupply just NW of Tam Ky on some hill. We were on the upper south side perimeter of the hill over looking the road (hwy 1. We took incoming fire on occasion which kept us in the foxhole. So we got pissed and made a table out of 3.5 & 81MM ammo crates covered with a white sheet from the Medics and had a Jim Beam party right there in the open one night. Then during one of my runs to Chu Lai in a 3/4ton we were caught in a fire fight (ARVN's vs Cong)on our way back just south of Tam Ky (I thought we were vieing for a spot in a Bonnie & Clyde movie). All of these times, the firefights, incoming and all were common to us because we were a Infantry Battalion, even though we were not 11B's. Providing support to the Line, on the Line required that we follow the mission be it a company, platoon or squad via Huey or convoy. Like the time I Chief Stamey had me hop on a Huey and hand deliver 7 M16's to the 101st in Hue. I was dropped off during a huge fire fight. I had to find my own way back to LZ Bronco and as a 18 year old SP4, it took me 6 days (1 night hiding in the bush and Hueys hop's that finally got me down to CamRhan Bay and a listing on the missing in action report). Now, when I read write-ups, critiques and articles in general about mission accomplishments, acts of heroism and sacirifice, I have a extra amount of respect for Combat Arms personnel but I also know from first hand experience that some supply and other support personnel were right up there just behind them. When hell breaks loose, at times I may up there but I'm still behind ours guys and they are there all the time. The after action reports, newspaper and media articles won't mention the Supply or Maintenance psnl but I know that they didn't run out of bullets, supplies or equipment so I know we were there. That's good enough for me.

Gentlemen, From WISC Dale Belke shared a copy of the "Syke's Regulars" newsletter edition, THE REPORTER from Oct 1970. I saw the name of a fellow Chicago guy, Allen T. Sarabia and phoned him that night as a fellow Vietnam vet... great conversation! I did NOT serve in the 1st/20th Inf - I was an MP sergeant working for the Division Provost Marshal at Chu Lai, '70-71. I was a member of the 23rd MP Co. I have invited Allen to a Chicago holiday party for my chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. I hope he joins us, because he has a friend with the 196th LIB from that time. I wanted to share this with you in the event that your association roster includes other 1970-71 guys from the Bn or Allen's company, C Co. I wish you all all health, happiness and success. On June 3rd, 1969, Roddie Lee Perry was KIA in a fight in Quang Ngai Province and is listed on D 1/20,s memorial page. It turns out that he was really in D 4/3rd sent to reinforce the 1/20th. On the 3rd of November this year, I was blessed with visiting his Mother and Sister, Patsy, in Irving Texas. We all visited Roddies gravesite and left flowers. Rest in Peace Roddie....Jack Armey

Webmaster's Note: Mr. Perry was with D/4/3. On the day of his death, 3 June 1969, D/4/3 was called upon to reinforce D/1/20 and was placed under Operational Control of the 1/20.  Our casualty reports also include all OpCon and Attached personnel.

With sorrow in my heart, I want to let you all know that Donald "Joe" Joseph Dietler, Jr. passed away 10/19/07. He was our cherished brother and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, friend, and a very brave, humble and patriotic American. We miss him dearly, thanks to all of you for keeping him safe in Viet Nam. It was a joy like no other when Joe appeared on our doorstep upon his return from Viet Nam. God Bless all of you, his brothers and comrades. Thank you all for serving. Joe's sister, Jeanie

I was so shocked to see my name on the Roster for D 1/20 Inf and then I remembered that when I arrived in Duc Pho I was assigned to D Co. but A co. was short so they sent me and a few other guys assigned to D Co. over to be assigned to A Co. It really and truely made me feel good to see my name and the name of some of my other buddies in the Co. Very good site.

I happened upon this page when I was searching for Lt. Terrance Ronan. I don't know people might be interested in, but I was there from Oct69 to Aug70, most of the time at LZ Liz and in charge of air operations. I made many notes of my time of service as I had planned to write a book. Still have the notes. No book. In Nov2006 I went to Arlington for the wreath laying, my first time ever. Been to the memorial many times and always check the name Sp4 James Jones of FL. Brad Johnson, Cranston, RI

There are a couple of video posted, I am putting together more. Who was stupid enough to carry a 8mm with all the other stuff. Me apparently, surprised I didn't shoot myself in the foot. My uncle was with Delta company and was KIA. He was a medic and was killed while rushing to the aid of a fellow soldier(sargent Freeman). My uncles name was Gary Browning. I never knew my uncle very well but I have been in touch with a few of the men he served with and they have shared the memories of my uncle with me and I am grateful for their kindness. Garys nickname was water buffalo. Thank you to all who have sacrificed to gives this country and our allies our freedom.

I started out as the Welder in the motor pool, but most of my time was in convoys either driving or riding shotgun. Some may remember this: on 28 April 1969 a 3/4 ton truck hit a command detonated mine stopped the convoy, (that was me) naturally in amnbush alley . Hollywood Jim was hit through the right shoulder with small arms fire out lower left back. Jim I kept your camera for 25 years until I am not sure it just started to leak and was unusable. It is gone now brother. I remember a little how about Cook you were short from Tennessee and carried pistols in a western holster. I remember Rick Lafoon from Texas you are I bet a lawyer, one of the grunts from Pennsylvania " Big Jim " what a wildman. We did some serious partying in the Motor Pool any of you grunts remember this ? This is a great website thanks . This really did help me.
