NARRATIVE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

 

OPERATION SHOW LOW

 

1.                  GENERAL

 

a.       11th Brigade CP remained at DUC PHO. A liaison team from 11th Light Infantry Brigade was sent to 2nd ARVN Division to effect
fire support coordination and to assist in general coordination between the two control headquarters.

 

b.      Task Force Barker in the Eastern part of the Operation Muscatine AO which is directly adjacent to the 4-3 Inf AO provided the 4-3
Inf. With Co B 4-3 Inf. Which is normally OPCON to Task Force BARKER (-) continued Operation MUSCATINE during the
conduct of Operation SHOW LOW.

 

c.       The 1st Bn, 20th Inf. Located in the DUC  PHO-MO DUC AO to the South of QUANG NGAI  Provided 4-3 Inf. With Co A
1-20 Inf. OPCON. The 1-20th Inf continued all assigned missions and operations during the conduct of Operation SHOW LOW.

 

d.      The 3rd Bn 1st Inf. had the mission of providing one rifle platoon as an immediate Reaction Force and the company minus to be
committed, on order. Company D was assigned the mission of providing the reaction force. The immediate Reaction force was
deployed to QUANG NGAI AIRFIELD with the Brigade Forward Support Element and Co D (-) remained at LZ Dragon
(BS731528).

 

e.       6th Support Battalion deployed a forward support element to QUANG NGAI Airfield on 6 March 1968.

 

2.                  Phase I (D-2, 5 March 1968): 4-3 Inf commenced deployment of forces at 050700 March 1968 with Co A moving from LZ Sue
(BS565877) to an NDP vic BS514803 and Co B conducting a Combat assault, commencing 050800 March 1968, from LZ UPTIGHT
(BS725856) to LZ vic BS523815. Upon completion of combat assault, Co B secured and initials fire Support Base at BS523815 no
later than 051000 March 1968. Co D moved from NDP, commence 050730 March 1968 and occupied LZ Sue (BS565877). D-6-11
Arty commences airlift from LZ Sue to initial forward fire support base at 051300 March 1968. E-1 Cav Plat and 3-C-26 Engr Plat (-)
released to OPCON of 4-3 Inf. Upon entry of MUSCATINE AO and move to initial forward fire support base vic BS535805 and on
order, move to and occupy NDP with Co A vic (BS514803).

 

3.                  Phase II (D-1, 6 March 1968): A (BS453773) with Co A and 3-D-26 Engr (-) moving on Axis RED and 3-E-1 Cav on Axis Blue,
on order. Co B remained at present location and provided security for B-6-11 Arty; prepared for combat assault on 7 March 1968;
prepared to assist in seizure of blocking position A, on order. Co C moved to and occupied PZ vic BS587850 and prepared for combat
assault on 7 March 1968. Co D secured LZ Sue and conducted platoon size search and destroy operations vic that location; established
squad size ambushes; and provide one Rifle platoon to Co C for duration of operation SHOW LOW. Co E (-) continued present operations.
11th Bde liaison team and Forward Support Element established a forward support base on the West, end of the QUANG NGAI Airfield
(BS604721) at 060800 March 1968. Bde liaison team closed at 2nf ARVN Division HQs 061700 March 1968 and established
communication with 11th Bde TOC at DUC PHO at 061715 March 1968.

 

4.                  Phase III (D-Day, 7 March 1968): 4-3 Inf. Combat assault with Co B from PZ vic BS523815 into LZ OAK; seized and occupied
blocking position P (BS437744). Co’ C and A 1-20 Inf conducted combat assaults from PZ Vic BS587852 and LZ Dragon (BS731528)
into LZ Oak and Pine, commenced S/D operations in zone of Axis Pawn and Knight respectively; destroying enemy or forcing him into
pre-selected killing zones. Co D (-) secured LZ Sue; conducted platoon size S/D operations vic LZ Sue; established squad size ambushes
until Operation SHOW LOW was completed; Co E (-) continued present operations until termination of Operation SHOW LOW.
3-E-1 Cav screened North of TRA KHUC River in Zone and prepared for employment as reaction force for 4-3 Inf.

 

5.                  3rd Bn, 4th Inf Regiment, 2nd ARVN Division moved from NGHIA HANH (BS617643) 070900 March 1968 for conduct of sweep to
the Northwest to secure objective X (BS565705) and conducted a sweep to the TRA KHUC River. 3rd Bn, 5th Regiment secured
blocking position North of the TRA KHUC River vic of Highway 5B from BS567762 to BS545765. 4th Bn, 4th Regiment conducted a
combat assault from PZ at QUANG NGAI Airfield into an alternate LZ at BS522675 and commenced sweep North to seize objective A
 vic BS540715 and continued sweep north to TBA KHUC River. 2nd Bn, 4th Regiment conducted a combat assault from PZ at
QUANG NGAI Airfield into an alternate LZ at BS522675 and commenced sweep North to seize objective Z vic BS540715 and
continued sweep North to TRA KHUC River. 2nd Div TAC CP, 21st Arty Bn and 1-4 APC Co, accompanied by 11th Bde liaison team
displaced from 2nd Div HQ’s in QUANG NGAI City to BS578730. 21st Arty provided forward fire support for maneuver units and
1-4 APC Co secured TAC CP and constituted the 2nd Division reaction force. 4th Regiment HQs, initially established at  QUANG NGAI
Airfield BS604712, later displaced forward by accompanying 2-4 Inf on combat assault and remained with that unit throughout the duration
of Operation Show Low.

 

6.                  Phase IV (D+3, 10 March 1968); 2nd ARVN Division with drew the following units from Operation Show Low; TAC CP, 4th Regiment
HQs, 2-4 Inf, 3-4 Inf and 3-5 Inf. 4-4 Inf given mission to support 4-3 Inf continuation of Operation Show Low by establishing a
blocking position from BS510745. The 21st Arty and 1-4 APC Co remained at the forward support Base at BS578703 for purpose of
continued support for 4-4 Inf, 4-3 Inf continued plans and preparation to continue Operation Show Low to the North of the TRA KHUC
River.

 

7.                  Phase V (D+4, 11March 1968); 4-3 Inf conducted S/D operation s in zone to the North and East of the RAKHUC River commencing
110700 March 1968 with Do’s B and C moving in zone. Co A-1-20 Inf moved to and established a blocking position vic BS454795.
Upon 4-3 Inf commencing movements of B and C companies to the North of the TRA KHUC River, 2nd ARVN withdrew all elements
from Operation Show Low.  4-3 Inf continued operations North of TRA KHUC River until 13 March 1968 Operation was terminated.

of these people were military age.  At least 3 were observed to evade in bushes at sight of aircraft. Also sighted 12 military
age males crossing river to the South at the same time. No women, children, or old men were observed crossing river. Info
was passed to 4-3 at the time of sighting.

091355 Mar                4-3 TOC: C-4-3, 1340hrs, BS462734; Detained 1 VCS male and 2 children who were hiding in bushes. No ID. Also
 found 1 poncho and 8 straw hats.       

 

091315 Mar                LATE ENTRY: 4-3 TOC: C-4-3, 1254hrs, BS458737; 2-C-4-3 found 15 water buffalo hidden in heavy brush and
