At 1740hrs 1-20 Infantry at LZ Liz VIP program received 430 grenades, 3 4.2 mortar rounds, 3 105mm, 2 155mm rounds, 3 175mm rounds, 1 Chi Com mine, 2 B-40 rockets, 2 M-16 magazines, 1 81mm, 11 M-79 rounds and 1 VC Booby trap destroy. At 1750hrs 1-20 Infantry BS618548 spotted 4 VC, 2 picked up weapons the other 2 picked up heavy bundles and place them on wooden skids. Then they spotted 2 more VC same Location calling Artillery now. At 1-20 Infantry at BS627555 calling in artillery 18 dinks run into hedge row, artillery hit, and no dinks have came out. At 1850hrs 1-20 Infantry at BS627555 7 VC 1 carrying packs 2 with weapons lost visual contact moving northwest along trail. At 1845hrs 1-20 Infantry to Colonel McClosky fixture Foxtrot 2 have security on Bridge vicinity BS771460 grids of no fire zone are security on bridge vicinity BS771460 grids of no fire zone are clear for Artillery and Air Strikes from M Duc.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters on December 17, 1968 is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units their Area of Operations ending their part of OPERATION VERNON LAKE II. 1-20 Infantry reports their Air Move to Mo Duc Area of Operation started at 0930hrs and was completed at 1730hrs. At 0940hrsBravo Company 39 Engineer at BS629828 detonated 10 pound mine with bamboo firing device, blew in place continued Mine Sweep. At 1010hrs Bravo Company 39 Engineer report culvert blown, crater 7’ X 2’, Road is passable to 2 lane traffic continued Mine Sweep will repair after Mine Sweep team is finished. At 1440hrs Charlie Company 39 Engineer at BS719593, 1 Chieu Hoi to Charlie Company he was turned over to MACV team #2 personnel at LZ Snoopy.

At 0940hrs Alpha Company is at BS760525 has 1 US WHA hit by Booby Trap mine and is evac to Chu Lai, he was in fair condition by Command and Control Helicopter. Also found 1 105mm Artillery and 81mm Mortar round Booby Trap and they where blown in place. At 1250hrs Alpha Company at BS768535 engaged 1 VC evading north and results is 1 VC KIA. At 1345hrs Alpha Company at BS786535, 1 VC CIA tried to escape and we now have 1 VC KIA. At 1405hrs Alpha Company at BS786535 detained 80 VCS walking to Mo Duc MACV. Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. LZ Bronco Bunker line accidental homicide two individuals in bunker 49 NBD, they were shot from the back of the bunker. Individual who did the shooting is believed to be a GI. Both men killed by M-16 fire. A third individual on bunker in state of shock this person fired back at the individual who did the shooting. When Navone on Bunker security preparing to rotate home was from Charlie Company other Individual was from Headquarters and Headquarter Company Cruz, SP4 Victor. SP4 CHARLES NAVONE JR (from Charlie Company) and CPL RAFAEL CRUZ CRUZ ARE LISTED AS KIA. At 2250hrs Bravo Battery 6-11 Artillery US entered EM’s tent and began waving his M-16 around, weapon went off and wounded one man in leg, not serious. Not known whether this is an accident or intentionally, man that did the shooting is in custody at PIO.

At 1545hrs Quang Ngai Report at DATE/TIME 122100hrs February 1969, Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry received small arms fire from vicinity refugee camp near Duc Pho. Bravo Company returned fire resulting in 1 90 year old civilian KIA, 1 PF WIA and 1 hut destroyed. Bravo Company utilized small arms fire and M-79 fire. Friendly units at refugee camp were Popular Self Defense Forces and a RF Company 937. Duc Pho is investigating matter, Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry received fire several times vicinity of the refugee camp. At 1700hrs CPT Newkirk from MAJ Erickson and MAJ Garcia Duc Pho senior adviser said PF Company was ordered in Sa Huynh ASAP morning of 12 February 1969 arrived about 0700hrs. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty: Sgt. Stone, distinguished himself while serving as squad leader of the 1st Platoon. The 1st Platoon was on a combat patrol mission just west of Landing Zone Liz when it came under intense automatic weapons and grenade fire from a well concealed company-size force of North Vietnamese regulars. Observing the platoon machine gunner fall critically wounded, Sgt. Stone remained in the exposed area to provide cover fire for the wounded soldier who was being pulled to safety by another member of the platoon. With enemy fire impacting all around him, Sgt. Stone had a malfunction in the machinegun, preventing him from firing the weapon automatically. Displaying extraordinary courage under the most adverse conditions, Sgt. Stone repaired the weapon and continued to place on the enemy positions effective suppressive fire which enabled the rescue to be completed. In a desperate attempt to overrun his position, an enemy force left its cover and charged Sgt. Stone. Disregarding the danger involved, Sgt. Stone rose to his knees and began placing intense fire on the enemy at pointblank range, killing 6 of the enemy before falling mortally wounded. His actions of unsurpassed valor were a source of inspiration to his entire unit, and he was responsible for saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military profession and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Alpha Company conducts a Recon in Force vicinity BS761389. At 1610hrs Alpha Company found a tunnel big enough to stand a Mortar tube and tunnel was destroyed. At 1848hrs at BS763383 Alpha Company receives small and automatic weapons fire and 60mm mortars results is 9 US WIA (E) and WHA (M) after Dust Off moved to BS769381 and they established their Night Defense Position. On June 8, 1969 in the 11^th Brigade Area of Operation much action was witnessed. In early morning hours, Duc Pho started the chain of events by receiving satchel charges, mortars after which Fire Support Base Bronco took an unknown amount of 120mm mortar, 75RR and RPG rounds. Two other Fire Support Bases in the Area of Operation came under attach (LZ Debbie and LZ Liz) at approximately the same time. At 1510hrs Delta Company was at BS741395 moving into position to support and at 1740hrs at BS741395 had 3 NVA KIA, 1 Chi Com Machine Gun, and 2 AK47 CIA. Delta Company was to assist Alpha Company in the search for the withdrawing enemy. Alpha Company 1-20 Infantry continued to make scattered contact with the enemy throughout the day and a helicopter was shot down. At this time Delta Company moved in to secure the downed helicopter which was shot down in the first lift of Alpha Company extraction in the late afternoon. While Delta Company 1-20 Infantry securing the downed aircraft was subjected to continual attacks throughout the night, but held its position. At 2105hrs Command and Control Helicopter re supply Delta Company and took their 2 WHA (1 Shock, and one gunshot) Late in the evening one of Delta Company Ambush position was attacked resulting in 1 US KHA and 3 WHA. While securing the downed extraction ship received unknown amount of RPG fire small arms fire resulting in 9 US WHA and extensive damage to the downed ship. The final results showed 6 US KHA, 13 US WHA, 68 NVA KIA, 9 crew-served weapons CIA, and 9 Individual weapons CIA. The 4.2 has not answer either the command or their internal net and at 0630hrs Bravo Company we hit our objective my 83 element saw 4 men in green moving, and they think they got one, they may have another in a bunker, will have a detailed report as soon as everything dies down. At 0655hrs Bravo Company further report on 0630hrs contact: We spotted 5 VC/NVA 4 dressed in green, with weapons in a blue uniform, they were headed east, we took them under fire, and we believe we wounded 1 of the 4 dressed in green and the one who dressed in blue. We searched the area, but we found only an M-26, US type, and one found some ammo type unknown, we will keep you advised of further developments. At 0732hrs unknown size enemy force took us under fire at grid BS795464- Request Urgent Dust Off for 1 US personnel with a gunshot wound of the head, will have gun ships on station for Dust Off, Name Rousseau, Duane completed at 0803hrs. At 0915hrs Bravo Company when Command and Control Helicopter came in with resupply received sniper fire from southeast about 300 meters outside perimeter, negative damage. One other US personnel fell and put a gash above his eve, will send him in on utility, this afternoon (medic) and at 0948hrs location BS802451. At 1035hrs Bravo Company location BS802451 initial contact report: the 63 element sniper fire from they believe two snipers, 50 to 60 meters from their east and to southeast, have one injured US personnel, calling in artillery on their enemy location. At 1045hrs Bravo Company location BS802451, requests an Urgent wound of the posterior. There will be Gun ships on station with Dust Off last name is Plovock, Dust Off completed at 1115hrs. At 1417hrs Bravo Company location BS802451, 87 elements has closed on Day Logger, all elements has closed on day logger. At 1700hrs Bravo Company location BS801456 have two VCS female while on Recon patrol at BS801456, found these two women hiding in a bunker. At 1000hrs Recon Platoon after EOD team got here we found 75 meters of tunnel and a large room, request 3 40 pound shade charges to blow tunnel. Also found some sort of cleaning kit for a mortar. At 1949hrs Recon leaving their snake location at BS844423 At 2050hrs Recon request urgent Dust Off for 3 US who stepped on a booby trap, they received shrapnel wounds in their legs (King, Halverson and Watson). PFC Robert Halverson, at 2123hrs Recon Platoon reports the Booby Trap as a claymore type (homemade) TNT embedded with shrapnel and set off trip wire. At 0625hrs Bravo Company part of my element opened upon by the Recon element and killed one US (Bailey) Bravo Company and wounded 2 men WIA Recon Platoon (Mack) frag in jaw and hand and (Harris) hit in neck. Request Urgent Dust Off completed at 0650hrs Mack was not Dusted Off also (Knutson) frag in neck not dusted off. It was the US who did the shooting it was not the RF or PRU, by one Medic, and one Commo man. At 0710hrs the 63 element we have returned to the perimeter at this time, please inform the Southern Bridge. The 62 and 64 element is manning the northern Bridge site. At 0735hrs Bravo Company 5 says he can not find a crossing site on this side of the river so we will move north of the Red Ball and Recon will move south along the river to the Red Ball. At 0845hrs the 67 element was left behind for security and will now move through the area, which we just swept through. At 0940hrs Bravo Company sending in 1 VCS female, age 20, negative ID. Bravo, Charlie Companies and Recon and Bravo Command Post and 92 are now at the southern Bridge site, but will be moving out shortly to marry up with the rest of the element at there planned Day Logger BS777444. At 1005hrs Bravo Company 67 element is now at the southern bridge site. At 1005hrs Bravo Company will be using saturation and daylight ambushes through out their Area of Operation and their Night Defense Position will be at BS786429. At 2005hrs Bravo Company 82 and 92 element at BS703432 while moving into Night Defense Position received small arms fire from a hootch located at BS783432 resulting in 2 US KHA, returned fire with unknown results. At 1054hrs Charlie Company at grid BS711432 found 1 male age sneaking around perimeter, believe he knows about VC/NVA in the area. The S-2 will send him to Military Intelligence. At 1200hrs Charlie Company is located at BS700559 and at 1425hrs at BS693437 have one NVA possible jungle fever approximately 21 years old and he stated that he is NVA and that their Medic left him to be picked up later. Charlie Company is setting up a ambush waiting for their return and he had a tag on him with D-40 written on it. Charlie Company at 1505hrs at BS693437, spotted two NVA wearing blue and black pants, they tried to detain them, but they evaded results with 1 VC KIA, he was carrying a bag of rice and NVA Poncho liner. At 1725hrs at BS686436 received sniper fire moving to Night Defense Position with results, 2 US WHA (E). Charlie Company is in their Night Defense Position at BS689436. At 1755hrs at BS689435 received heavy sniper fire from a squad size, have 3 WHA (E) and 1 WHA (M) who does not want evacuation, Dust Off is completed at 1910hrs. At 1910hrs Charlie Company 1 man with stomach wound (most serious) completed at 1855hrs by Command and Control Helicopter. Also picked up the other 2 at 1912hrs (Lifts assisted by Warlords) Names of people Dust OFF Fagundus gun shot to in right arms and Brewer, John gunshot wound to right foot. Spotted another small base camp one appears to be a cement bunker and 4 other Bunkers. At 1450hrs in reference spot Report on 15 Sept they reported that the NVA POW died on the 16 September. At 0905hrs Alpha Company 54 element is moving out for today’s operation. At 1105hrs our 54 element closing on Day Logger and at 1225hrs Alpha Company another Landing craft just beached so far we have one bulldozer with trailer. At 1430hrs Alpha Company Urgent Dust Off request the 54 element while making their sweep hit a booby trap at BS785535. Two US were wounded. The Charge was buried under the ground. Names Ayer with a head wound behind left ear, Rulison with frag in the chin and upper chest ETA 15-20 completed at 1445hrs and Ayer was evacuated to Chu Lai 91^st Medical (BS785535). At 1553hrs Alpha Company extracted coordinates of Booby trap grid BS786523, The booby trap was a frag grenade lying in a bush near the village and did not look as if it was to be intended, to be placed on the trail, trip wire detonated. At 0850hrs Bravo Company Ranger and RF conduct a Combat Assault from Southern Bridge to BS762420 with 1^st PZ at1835hrs and Last LZ at 1845hrs. At 1340hrs Delta at BS793459 detained 1 VC female evading she is the wife of a VC village chief, she is responsible for collecting rice in the area and she will be evac to Bronco. Delta Company is at BS793438 at 1410hrs and at 1710hrs at BS800465 detained 1 man the individual has an ID card believe to be a fake, and will be evac to Bronco. At 1830hrs Delta Company is located at BS793439 and detained 1 female VCS she keeps returning to location, where people had been removed form evac to Bronco. At 2000hrs Delta Company Night Defense Position is at BS797759, 12 at BS817407, 63 BS794453, BS799458, and 14 at BS820409. PFC RONALD WAYNE IRELAND was listed as KHA (Died of Wounds) from the action on November 15, 1969 below.

At 1000hrs on November 15, 1969 Delta Company is located at BS802418. At 0925hrs at BS793460 detained 1 VCS he was detained when he got off his Sampan. The individual was called over and had a wound in his left leg. He was dressed in Maroon and had a turban on his head. The interpreter had question him and said he should be sent in for questioning. At 1030hrs Delta Company at BS808436 received small arms fire from BS813441 will engaged with artillery negative casualties. At 1833hrs Delta Company at BS814406 in their Night Defense Position. At 1840hrs Delta Company at BS793460, the 66 element received 82mm mortar round negative casualties engaging at BS799463 with 81mm Mortar rounds. At 1948hrs at BS804410 was moving into their ambush positions along the Song Tra Cau river just north just north of LZ Bronco and the squad was ambushed probably some NVA with hand grenades. Results being 2 US WHA (E) with frag wounds 82 aided by 94 and received hand grenades with negative Casualties or damage, negative engagement Dust Off was completed at 2002hrs. The Night Defense Position that evening there was contact with a NVA/VC. Their location was near An Trung village along the Son Tra Cau River when the ambush occurred. At 0653hrs Bravo Ranger Team is moving to BS774444 and at 0701hrs the Gorilla Team is moving to BS781441. At 0713hrs Bravo Company requests Urgent Dust Off for two Vietnamese female civilians and one Vietnamese child had frag wounds to the face and body. It is unknown if these wounds were received from friendly or enemy fire completed at 0725hrs Grid BS783433. Bravo Company Urgent Requests Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese civilian female with a gun shot wounds in her chest. She received these wounds from the PF completed at 0835hrs grid BS778445. At 0914hrs The Ranger Team reports they have closed on the Command Post at BS783433. At 0936hrs Bravo the 13 and 14 elements have spotted 20 to 30 VC at grid BS755450. They received sniper fire and now pursuing the enemy force. At 0948hrs Bravo Company Urgent Dust Off request for 1 US with frag wounds in the arm, possible a severed artery. The man (Van Houten, I believe was SP4 Douglas Van Houten) threw a frag grenade into a bunker and some of the back blast hit him completed at 1009hrs grid BS753450. At 0950hrs Bravo Company the VC we spotted fired on us and then they evaded some to the northwest and others to the southwest. They were wearing black shorts and white shirts, 4 to 5 weapons in the group of personnel grid BS755450. At 1130hrs Bravo Company the 13 and 14 elements have closed on the Twin Ville. At 1138hrs Bravo Company reports that the 86 element has closed on the South Bridge from cutting bamboo, they will be going out again at 1300hrs grid BS793414. At 1211hrs Bravo Company Urgent Dust Off is Requested, for three RF who had been vomiting blood and have fevers and one is near death. They are located at the North Bridge at BS771461. Possible food poisoning completed at 1221hrs. At 1320hrs the Bravo Company 17 element grid BS767427 picked up 2 Vietnamese detainees dressed in Khaki shirts and shorts, both of the detainees are between 40-65 years old. The RF working with the 17 element said ID no good and will bring them to Command Post for questioning. They were turned into Duc Pho. At 1404hrs Bravo Company the 86 element is going back out to cut bamboo at grid BS479414. At 2017hrs Bravo Company all snakes are in location. The 86 snake is at BS821411, the 14 snake is at BS785461, the 15 snake is at BS786449, the 13 element is at BS791448, the snake is at BS799441, the 25 element is at BS810431 with the 85 snake is at BS812421. At 2150hrs Bravo company the 15 element spotted movement to their south at grid BS786447, we shot illumination and saw one VC, we took incoming from him and returned fire resulting in one VC KIA. He was wearing Black shorts, a white shirt, and white plastic helmet (NVA Type) and poncho jacket, no weapons was found. At 2205hrs Bravo Company the 14 element spotted 15 to 20 VC moving north toward their location at BS785461, we blew four claymore and small arms fire on them; we have 2 KIA VC wearing black shorts and shirts. Both the VC was carrying one sandbag of chow and tea, no weapons found. At 2246hrs Bravo Company the 14 element will be moving back to the North Bridge along with Vietnamese grid BS771461 We are going to move back to BS785464 in the morning, we have the 1 VC KIA. At 2305hrs Bravo Company the 25 element sprung their ambush with one VC KIA who was wearing black pajamas he was a member of a rice carrying party. He had 1 US canteen, civilian shoes, and was moving north, he had no weapon. Late report Bravo Company the 99 element is checking out the area for the MHA (Manchester) from the 24 element found pieces of M16, pieces of a rucksack, his basic load of ammo, and unrecognizable pieces of his Body grid BS791447. At 1530hrs in regard to Bravo Company MHA we found the remaining parts of the body, M-16, PRC 25 radio, parts of the body as yet are not identifiable as the remains of Manchester. The M-16 and PRC 25 are both combat losses. We sound several bunkers, a tunnel leading to the river, detonate cord, and blasting caps. PFC GARY ORAL C.
