Headquarters and Headquarter Company
May 9, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. NH Saber 48 is on station cleared into Box 61, negative findings in Box 61, broke station to refuel at 0059hrs. At 0550hrs LZ Liz Bunker line Inspection: Bunkers # 13, 14, 15, 16 where checked they all had a good knowledge of their job. At 1000hrs Warlord 31 is on station for Box 53. At 1050hrs Warlord 30 is on station for Box 51 at grid BS775377 sighted a tunnel complex with bunkers and fighting positions, tunnel partially caved in. At 1140hrs From Brigade at 091200 resume normal operations. At 1205hrs To Brigade from 1-20 Infantry TOC: has resumed normal combat operations. At 1255hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 186 is on station for resupply. At 1349hrs Brigade request 2 squads to provide security for Engineer route reconnaissance from Nui Vong to OP Woodstock, elements to be returned to Nui Vong at completion of mission. Coordination has been made with Brigade via CPT Cummings. At 1410hrs TO: Nui Von from 1-20 Infantry S-3 has provide 15 man security element including NCOIC 100830hrs May 1971 for Engineer route reconnaissance, expected duration 1 day. Resupply aircraft will move element from Nui Vong to Out Post Woodstock 100800 to commence mission to highway 1, pick up and return upon completion. At 2116hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Charlie 5, Bravo 4, Alpha 9, and Recon 1 for at total of 19. At 2330hrs LZ Liz Bunker line Inspection: # 14 personnel alert, on the spot corrections password, # 15 guard facing wrong direction and negative knowledge of password, etc, # 16 all personnel asleep, placed man on guard, called Command Post for action, # 17 and # 1 very satisfactory. Legend: 1st Platoon 58, 2nd Platoon 16, 3rd Platoon 83, 4th Platoon 42, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 9, 1971

Alpha Company used Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0935hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon is moving to Patrol Base vicinity BS746283. At 0945hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon is moving to Patrol Base vicinity BS733395. At 1005hrs Alpha Company Command Post, 4th and 1st Platoons are moving out on all day patrol and now at checkpoint 1, vicinity BS739387. At 1645hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon while preparing to move out on patrol received 20-30 rounds of AK 47 sniper fire from grid BS745381, spotted 3 VC/NVA with weapons moving south, a Fire Mission was called in and swept area, negative finding. At 2017hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon called in Fire Mission on Suspected Enemy Location at vicinity BS718376, the 2nd Platoon observed 1 secondary explosion, fired 27 HE 105 and 1 WP Artillery. At 2045hrs Alpha Company all elements in Night Defense Position Command Post, 1st and 4th Platoon at BS739386, 2nd Platoon at BS724388, 3rd Platoon at BS745384 and 3rd Platoon ambush at BS742372 with 9 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Bravo Company
May 9, 1971

Bravo Company used Patrol Bases and multiple Patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0710hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon vicinity grid bS693512 found 2 freshly dug graves, 1-2 days old with sandals prints around them. The 1st grave contained 1 male NVA 20 years old in green uniform, wrapped in OD Blanket under him 3 pair of shorts and 2 hammocks, had 2 bullets in chest, 2nd grave 1 VC/NVA wearing black short and wrapped in a hammock approximately 21 years old. At 0715hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon Night Defense Position will be their Patrol Base at BS692514. At 1130hrs Bravo Company requested Routine Dust Off for 1 US with cut over left eye Line #S8293 Gary W. Smith, will be picked up by resupply bird. Brigade requested 2 squads to provide security for engineer route reconnaissance from Nui Vong to OP Wood stock and element will to be returned to Nui Vong at completion of the mission Coordination has be made with CPT Cummings. At 1410hrs to Nui Vong from S-3 1-20 Infantry provide 15 men security element including NCPIC on 10 May at 0830hrs for engineer route Recon expected duration 1 day. The Resupply bird will move element from Nui Vong to OP wood stock at 0800hrs to commence mission to Highway 1, pick up and return upon completion. At 1921hrs Bravo Company closed on their units. At 2055hrs all units in their Night Defense Position and the company had 4 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Charlie Company
May 9, 1971

At 0700hrs Charlie Company all ambushes closed on their location 3rd Platoon ambush from BS717465, 1st Platoon ambush from BS722410 and 2nd Platoon ambush from BS702452. Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1832hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon patrol closed BS725414 and 2nd Platoon patrol closed at BS707448. At 2045hrs Charlie Company all elements in their Night Defense Position Command Post and 3rd Platoon at BS717466, 3rd Platoon ambush at BS724412, 2nd Platoon at BS707448 and 2nd Platoon Ambush at BS701452 with 5 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Delta Company
May 9, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0530hrs LZ Liz Bunker line inspection: bunkers #13, 14, 15, 16 were checked and they all had a good knowledge of their jobs. At 2330hrs LZ Bunk Line Inspection #14 personnel alert, on the spot corrections password, had commo, #15 guard facing wrong direction with negative knowledge password and etc. # 16 all personnel asleep, place a man on guard, called Command Post for action #17 and #1 very satisfactory.

 

Echo Company
May 9, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1610hrs Recon is moving to Night Defense Position at BS674516. At 1800hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 22 broke station. At 1803hrs MACV MO Duc, captured VC of yesterday lead PF 260 to a bunker containing 3 M-26 hand frag, 1 US canteen, 1 US pistol belt and a rice cache of 1,000 pounds vicinity BS738591.
