Headquarters and Headquarter Company
March 9, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0035hrs TMF at 2312hrs String 292 C has stationary target with negative metal confirmed, and engaged with 16 rounds HE Artillery 155. At 0140hrs Saber 44 reports is on station to check TMF sighting 20 personnel vicinity BS802456. At 0155hrs Saber 44 vicinity BS803456 sighted some lean to hootches, expended in the area with negative results and broke station at 0217hrs. At 0900hrs Duc Pho PRU/Delta Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS765433, while conducting a combined Search and Seal Operation the PRU uncovered a tunnel. The tunnel was destroyed with a claymore mine. Upon further investigation they found the claymore had killed 5 males, military age, wearing light green uniforms. Results, clothing food, lighter with US Army and initials PFE on it, poncho liners, hammocks and grenades, documents evac to Duc Pho. At 2010hrs TMF At 1948hrs String 292 C has stationary target with negative metal confirmed and at 2000hrs engaged with 16 rounds HE Artillery 155. At 2055hrs Saber 40 is on station in support of Bravo Company and at 2105hrs Saber 40 observed and has engaged 5 VC/NVA) evading west vicinity BS731445. Results 1 VC/NVA KIA. At 2125hrs Saber 40 observed and engaged 2 VC/NVA evading into bunker vicinity BS732448, resulting in 1 VC/NVA KIA. At 2213hrs Saber 40 received small arms fire with negative hits. At 2215hrs Saber 40 is breaking station to refuel and rearm. At 2230hrs Saber 40 is on station to continue their observation of Bravo Company Area of Operation. At 2310hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon element moved out to search area, finding 2 KIA by Saber 40, 1 VC female, 1 VC male wearing green clothing, blew 3 bunkers and found 15 to 20 fighting positions all in the vicinity of BS731445. Also found 2 VC children in hootches ages 5 and 7 years old. 1st Platoon closed on Night Defense Position at 0005hrs and Saber 40 broke station at 0007hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 53, 2nd Platoon 98, 3rd Platoon 26, 4th Platoon 22, CO-66.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
March 9, 1971

Alpha Company continued to set up Patrol Bases and used heavy patrolling and Day light ambushes in their Area of Operation. At 0645hrs Alpha 2ndPlatoon is moving out for BS765434. At 0940hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon ambush closed at BS683506, 2nd Platoon at BS674509 and 3rd Platoon ambush closed on BS703502. At 0940hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon Patrol at checkpoint 1 vicinity BS698503. At 0958hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 2 at BS695500 and 1st Platoon Patrol at checkpoint 2 BS703504. At 1947hrs Alpha Company Command Post with 3rd and 4th Platoon BS705507, 1st Platoon BS696510, 2nd Platoon BS697514, 2nd Platoon ambush BS690514, 3rd Platoon ambush at BS703511.

 

Bravo Company
March 9, 1971

Bravo Company continued to set up Patrol Bases and use multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1200hrs Bravo Company 1st and 3rd Platoons in their Patrol Base at BS739456. At 1350hrs Bravo Company Command Post element vicinity BS737434 found a Mark-4 mine 3" in diameter and 4" high with a fuse well and blew in place. At 1747hrs Bravo Company all patrols have closed. At 1930hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon ambush has changed to BS734448. At 2050hrs Bravo Company Command Post, 2nd and 4th Platoon is at BS720436, 1st Platoon is at BS725447 with 3rd Platoon at BS734448. At 2010hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS725447, sighted 10 VC/NVA moving south at 500 meters to their west requested artillery fire mission and gun ships. At 2055hrs Saber 40 is on station in support of Bravo Company. At 2105hrs Saber 40 observed and engaged 5 VC/NVA evading west vicinity BS731445, results 1 VC/NVA KIA. At 2125hrs Saber 40 observed and engaged 2 VC/NVA evading into a bunker, vicinity BS732448 and resulting in 1 VC/NVA KIA. At 2213hrs Saber 40 received small arms fire with negative hits. At 2215hrs Saber 40 is breaking station to refuel and to rearm. At 2230hrs Saber 40 has observed numerous trails and bunkers and movement. At 2255hrs Saber 40 is on station to continue observation of Bravo Company Area of Operation. At 2310hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon element moved out to search area, finding 2 KIA by Saber 40, 1 female and 1 Male VC wearing green clothing, blew 3 bunkers and found 15 to 20 fighting positions all in vicinity BS731445. Also found 2 Vietnamese children in the hooch ages 5 and 7 years old. 1st Platoon closed on Night Defense Position at 0005hrs and Saber 40 broke station at 0007hrs.

 

Charlie Company
March 9, 1971

Charlie Company continued their patrolling and some day ambushes in their Area of Operation. At 0838hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon patrol is moving to BS674540. At 0935hrs Charlie Company all snakes have closed. At 1324hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon closed at BS697530 and the 3rd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 2 at BS703504. At 1505hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS695549 found booby trap a M-26 grenade with pressure release location on a trail between a hedgerow near a village and it was disarmed. At 1917hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon Day Ambush has closed on BS664562. At 2250hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS673572 at OP Wood stock heard an loudspeaker vicinity BS6658 saying to PF and RF American will leave you and we will overrun you.

 

Delta Company
March 9, 1971

Delta Company has their Security Mission for LZ Liz with Road Security. At 0720hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon is location vicinity BS765434.

 

Echo Company
March 9, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
