Headquarters and Headquarter Company
June 9, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0515hrs Radar sighted 1 to 5 stationary personnel at BS740418 and engaged with 18 HE rounds. At 0503hrs Radar sighted 1 to 5 stationary personnel at BS712436 with Alpha Company informed. M26 all elements area at their objective the 147 is at objective 1 at BS738648, the 937 RF is at objective 4 at BS733636 and the 183 RF is at objective 7 at BS727636. At 0830hrs M26 at grid BS752650 detained 20 civilians who were later released. At 0839hrs M26 we are at objective 2 at BS738644, 5 at BS738632 and 8 at BS728623. At 0950hrs M26 at 0940hrs at grid BS7330622 we saw 2VC coming out of a tunnel area and engaged with small arms fire and with results is 2 VC KIA. No weapons were found and we are checking the area at this time. We engaged at 15 meters and were evading when they were engaged, the tunnel contained 6 pound of documents, which will go through MACV channels. At 1430hrs M26 we took sniper rounds from BS727629 and called in Artillery with negative findings. At 1625hrs S-2 we request an Urgent Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese female VC who was shot in the leg at BS743468, she evaded when she saw the US and engaged at 150 meters and told the US there are VC in the area. The US found 3 tunnels in hedgerows, 20 to 75 meters long but no VC were found. Grenades were tossed in the tunnels. Each Tunnel contained medical supplies, which will be evac to LZ Liz. The female had no ID wore white and black and age 55. At 1725hrs S-2 We have detained 1 female VCS approximately 55 years old and wearing a white top and black bottoms, with no ID at grid BS743438. She has a 5 year old baby with her. She has a VC son who is a Staff Sergeant she will go through MACV channels. At 1745hrs 26 Engineer reports 2 acres were cleared at BS768599 with 200 gallons of fuel expended. We have 4 D7 operational and 1 D7 with a track blown off and 1 CEV operational and 1 CEV deadline. At 1740hrs The Bravo Company 93 element detained 2 male VC, 1 wearing black shirt and blue pants and approximately 21 and 1 wearing green and approximately 26 at BS750450. Neither had an ID also we detained 1 female, approximately 35, wearing a white top and black bottom with no ID. She has 13 sons with her and all will go to MACV. At 1920hrs S-2 the 2 VC CIA by Alpha Company was turned over to MACV Duc Pho RF. We heard M-16 automatic weapons fire. We ran to the PF location 1 VC was found KIA who the PF said tried to escape. The KIA from 65 to 67 was the VC Pho Nghai Assistant Security Chief. In late 69 he went to the mountains and he was trained there and recently returned from the mountains and was a VC Duc Pho Cadre member. At 1920hrs 26 engineer all elements are in their Night Defense Position at BS769600. At 1915hrs Radar sighted 10 to 15 stationary personnel at BS778483 at 1920hrs and engaged with 26 HE and at BS777497 and 6 to 10 personnel were sighted moving northwest with negative clearance due to MACV. At 2315hrs Radar spotted lights at BS739440 with negative clearance due to the proximity of the built up area and at 0120hrs at BS717435 1 to 5 stationary personnel were engaged with 14 HE.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
June 9, 1970

At 0715hrs Alpha Company the 55 element went to pick up their Mechanical Ambushes and found the wires cut and claymores removed. The batteries were left in place, grid BS724453. Alpha Company we are using Day logger and saturation patrolling in out Area of Operation. At 1510hrs Alpha Company the 13 and 15 element spotted two personnel evaded to the east and checked the area with negative finding. We detained 3 different males in the Ville. At 1813hrs Alpha Company we request an Urgent Dust Off for one US with multiple frag wounds of the legs, Line # Hopkin. At 1950hrs we are at our Night Defense Position at BS738420. Alpha Company reports PFC Brian D. Hopkins evac at 1819hrs to Bravo 23 Medical with multiple frag wounds left arm and both legs.

 

Bravo Company
June 9, 1970

Bravo Company continued to use multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1740hrs Bravo Company 93 element detained 2 males VC 21 to 26, no ID, at BS750450, we also detained 1 female approximately 35, no ID, and 13 sons with her all will go to MACV.

 

Charlie Company
June 9, 1970

At 0806 Charlie Company 53 element found 2 booby traps #1 M-26 (frag grenade) with nylon wire trip on a trail, and #2 was a Punji pit 1’ X 1’ X1, old on trail in a hedgerow. It was made of bamboo and 3" long and found at grid BS750657. Late Report: Charlie Company Combat Assault from Dragon strip the 1st PZ at 0635hrs to Last LZ at 0733hrs at locations BS745645, BS752650, BS842640 and BS748639. At 0848hrs Charlie Company 95 element found 2 bunkers, 3’ X 3’ X 4’ with a trench leading to a camouflaged hooch with some freshly cooked rice. Found a US type helmet liner, which will be destroyed all these in vicinity grid BS744641. At 1120hrs Charlie Company working at grid BS746642 the 93 element found a booby trap Ville, there were holes in the ground 10" deep and 1" X 1’ and covered with plastic. When someone steps in a hole and or the stick in it, it sets off a Chi Com grenade. The 93 element has checked 2 so far and found a M-26 grenade in it and a old Chi Com grenade used in the other. Also, there are holes leading to a hootch and in the doorway, we are still checking out the Ville. At 1310hrs we found and blew in place a booby trapped fish can with C-4 in it with a pressure release type device. A VC type blasting caps with 2 C-type batteries and found on a trail in vicinity BS746644. At 1315hrs Charlie Company we have one male detainee, approximately 50 years of age, wearing a purple shirt and white pants with no ID. He will be extracted to Brigade Military Intelligence. At 1325hrs Charlie Company at BS746644, we found and blew in place a homemade type booby trap made of 5’’ onion can over a 8" hole to detonate the booby trap when stepped on. At 1405hrs Charlie Company found two propaganda signs, one Red and one Green with yellow lettering. Both about 1’ X 6" and found on trees and were anti VIP program vicinity BS752652. At 1420hrs we found a document inside of an old French house which the Kit Carson Scout says contained names of VC students at BS753648. The Documents will be evacuated to LZ Bronco. At 1925hrs Charlie Company at their Night Defense Position BS744645. At 2030hrs Delta Company reports elements locations 15 BS748636, 16 BS756653, 96 BS748638, 55 BS742634, 56 BS751648, 97 BS757644. At 2230hrs Charlie Company receive 2 incoming rounds, believed to be from a 50 Cal, fired from their northwest at 800 meters. Charlie Company isn’t going to engaged because it out of the Area of Operation grid BS745645.

 

Delta Company

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
June 9, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 3 for a total expended of 30 HE, 18 WP and 21 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0500hrs Recon Platoon reports their locations at 13 is at BS750630, 14 is at BS760430 and the 15 element is at BS744631. At 0820hrs Recon Platoon 80 pounds of powder for some kind of booby trap was found at BS750631 and at 0825hrs 15 to 20 pounds of powder was found. It was found in the same area as the 13 packs, which contained 15 pounds of medical supplies, 3 AK 47 magazines with ammo. Also Recon Platoon reported to have found a carrying case of documents (3 pounds), 3 more pounds of documents, 7 Chi Com pull type blasting caps and 4 Chi Com mom electric blasting caps. Charlie Company along with 11 electric blasting caps, 3 B 40 rockets with mortars, 9 VC made (soda cans with a pull type, firing device), 1 Chi Com grenade and 1 Gas Mask with many other misc. items. At 0940hrs Recon Platoon we found a booby trap set with a frag grenade, and (18 pound pressure release) type at BS752732 and it was blown in place. At 1040hrs Recon Platoon the 14 element at 100 meters east of BS750631 picked up 1 male detainee, age 27, wearing all black. He was evading and the 14 element pursued him and said halt. The detainee stopped, and put his hands in the air, he had no ID. At 2000hrs Recon Platoon reports their locations 13 at BS761630, the 14 element is at BS747626 and the 15 element is at BS752629.
