Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0015hrs South OP had preplanned practice alert, achieved 100% at 0019hrs and back to 50% at 0025hrs. Fired Illumination preplanned Hill Defense Target, H & I with M-79 and small arms fire, judged satisfactory by Hill Officer In Charger. At 0100hrs Alpha Company LT Sprayberry checked bunkers 15, 16, 17, 1, and 2 all bunkers satisfactory. At 0325hrs Alpha Company LT Waugh inspected bunkers 4 through 9 and all found satisfactory. At 0717hrs LZ Liz Access Road is mine swept. At 0900hrs Primo3 is on station at this time. At 1305hrs LATE SPOT RF 417 at BS915261 and at 082300hrs RF 417 tried to booby tap a hand grenade, the grenade detonated with results 1 RF KIA. At 1540hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 is on station at this time and broke station at 1635hrs. At 1840hrs 1-20 Infantry notified Brigade TOC that they have 2 personnel missing, they were suppose to have been arrested for a Hit and Run incident in Quang Ngai. 1-20 Infantry unable to contact Quang Ngai to request for Assistance, the 2 personnel names are PFC Powell and SP5 Wagner. At 2025hrs Warlord Black is on station for Box 68, was diverted to BS671511 to cover Dust Off for Bravo Company 1st Platoon at 2029hrs. At 2039hrs going back to Box 68 and broke station at 2120hrs going to Quang Ngai for fuel. At 2130hrs TMF GS-6 vicinity BS766430 have 7 to 10 personnel moving north to south, AAU confirmed, received clearance at 2130hrs and engaged at 2132hrs with 13 HE 4.2 mortars. At 2131hrs Alpha Company LZ Liz went on alert when red star cluster was fired at bunker 13 at 2133hrs achieved 100% and had cease-fire at 2135hrs. Alert ended at 2150hrs, fired H & I with M-79 and small arms fire, Illumination fired on preplanned hill Defense Targets and Alert judged as satisfactory by Battalion Commander. Legend: 1st Platoon 81, 2nd Platoon 83, 3rd Platoon 59, 4th Platoon 88, CO-50.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz.
Bravo Company
July 9, 1971
Bravo Company continued will continue to use Patrol bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1700hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon requested priority Dust Off for 1 US multiple frag wounds to legs from a booby trap, can of Petna with trip wire located in a hedgerow, Bird # 54 completed the Dust Off at 1716hrs at BS660500. At 2010hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon reports their Night Defense Position vicinity BS757527 received approximately 30 rounds of AK 47 fire, 20 to 75 meters to the west. Results 1 US WHA with gun shot wound to hand and side returned fire with M-79 and swept the area with negative finding, will swept area again at first light, Dust Off # 54 made pick up at 2035hrs Line # S8293, Smith, Gary W. At 2159hrs Bravo Company at approximately 2020hrs immediately after the contact we had 1 Mechanical Ambush that was detonated vicinity BS663516, called in Fire Mission on it will check it out in morning.

Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1735hrs Recon reports their position for tonight vicinity BS683518. At 1828hrs Recon is moving out to their night location. At 1930hrs Recon requested 1 Urgent Dust Off for 1 US with heat exhaustion, P8540, Bird 54 completed at 1945hrs vicinity BS680520 sent to Chu Lai. Recon closed on their Night Defense Position at BS683518.
