Headquarters and Headquarter Company
July 9, 1970
Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0200hrs North OP Radar sighted at BS739449 3 to 4 personnel with negative clearance due to the proximity of Recon Platoon. At 1530hrs 11 Brigade Division Artillery Area of Operation, while on a Visual Recon spotted 3 men negative packs or weapons evaded into deserted Ville to west. Closer check revealed 5 VC conical hats, 1 US bush hat, 2 blue shirts, numerous pots and pans, 1 pt of rice, 2 US machetes, 1 bayonet and 1 pair of binoculars. Information was sent to the 1-20 Infantry so they will check further (see Bravo Company). At 2105hrs North OP Radar sighted 3 to 4 personnel that where moving east from BS738437 with negative clearance due to friendly in the Ville area. LEGEND: 1st Platoon 14-19, 2nd Platoon 54-59, 3rd Platoon 34-39, Co- 21.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
July 9, 1970
At 0809hrs Alpha Company the 36, 37, 16, elements have closed on BS752407 and 57 and 56 elements are moving to access road for security and 58, 17, 38 elements have closed on Liz to take over the Security Mission for Liz.
Bravo Company
July 9, 1970
Bravo Company continued their joint Operations with PF and RF units on their Hamlet Pacification and security of Highway 1. At 0647hrs Bravo Company the 18 element is moving to BS768582, the 56 element is in their Day Logger at BS738659 and the 58 element is moving to link up with the PF 251 element at BS721640. At 0710hrs Bravo Company the 38 element has 1 female detainee; 23 years old wearing all black with no ID at BS763574, she was evac to MACV Mo Duc. At 0805hrs Bravo Company the 57 element found a booby trap 75 meters from the LOH crash sight at BS752654. The booby trap was a pressure type electric firing device (2 BA 30 batteries) with 3 60mm He rounds, 1 can of explosives and 1 M-79 HE rounds as explosives. It was destroyed in place. Bravo Company found numerous signs warning people to stay out of area due to booby traps in the area. At 0915hrs Bravo Company the 57 element found another booby trap 15 meters away from the crash sight. It was a pressure type with 2 batteries for power. The explosives were an 81mm HE and a 105mm He Artillery round. At 0940hrs Bravo Company the 57 element is moving back and have a number of signs telling the Vietnamese to stay our of the area due to booby traps and to leave the food and rice for the VC. We found 3 signs made of tin, 2 red and 1 green which were evac to LZ Liz at grid 752654. At 0950hrs Bravo Company the 57 element spotted 3 VC and in pursuit at this time. These 3 people were 300 meters to the north of the downed LOH and spotted the 57 element and evaded. No weapons were spotted and the VC was dressed in white clothes at grid BS751652. At 1550hrs Bravo Company the 58 element is moving to the north from their Day Logger checking out Artillery report see Headquarters and Headquarter Company. They received sniper fire from the south at 200 meters from BS735629. The area was engaged with 81mm Mortar fire. The 58 element is in solid contact at 1800hrs at 100 meters from a reinforced enemy squad, the end of the Artillery Mission was at 1745hrs. The 21 element is moving to reinforce the 58 element The Bravo 21 and 58 elements have checked out the area with negative findings. At 2024hrs Bravo Company the 58 Night Defense Position is changed to BS730636 and the 14 element is in their ambush location at BS738634.
Charlie Company
July 9, 1970
At 0745hrs Charlie Company we request a routine Dust Off for 1 US with s swollen jaw and needs medical attention line #42 SP4 Yother Dust Off completed 0925hrs grid BS780458. At 0808hrs Charlie Company elements have closed on BS784458. At 2120hrs Charlie Company is in their Night Defense Position with multiply ambushes out.
Delta Company
July 9, 1970
At 1445hrs Delta Company we are en route to BS750440 from Liz. All Cordon and Search operations in their Area of Operation are completed with negative findings and the 14 element closed on BS750444. The 21 and 54 element has closed on BS751450 and the 34 element has closed on BS738438. At 1700hrs Delta Company will leave at 1800hrs instead of 1830hrs. At 1800hrs Delta Company the 14 element is moving to BS760440, the 54 element is moving to BS755460 and the 34 element is moving to BS727432. At 1900hrs Delta Company all patrols are in the Night Defense Position. At 2015hrs Delta Company reported there are in their Night Defense Position with multiply ambushes out.
Echo Company
July 9, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0510hrs 4.2 Platoon reports negative expenditures. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0730hrs Recon Platoon reports all elements have linked together and we are moving to LZ Liz. Recon Platoon reports they are on LZ Liz to will continue their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. SP4 Marcos Velez was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.
