Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0035hrs Request from Brigade need a population overlay of Tu Ngia. At 0045hrs While in Night Defense Position RF 172 and Echo Troop 1-1 Calvary received 6 rounds of RPG fire from unknown size of enemy forces resulting in 3 US WIA, 1 APC slightly damage, negative MACV casualties, gird BS686534. At 0605hrs Primo 3 is on station. At 0700hrs Rattler 13 Bird is on station. Inferno 59 is on station at 0730hrs working Box 50. At 0710hrs 4-4 ARVN while on a raid made contact with unknown size enemy force results 4 VC KIA, 3 VC CIA, 10 packs VC type CIA prisoners taken to Bronco grid BS283590. At 0710hrs 3-4 ARVN while on a Search and Clear mission took 40 VC suspects and will evac to Bronco grid BS735446. At 0710hrs LRRP inserted, Team 1 –090800hrs to 1300hrs August 1971 Upper Left BS2353 and Lower Right and Team 2 090800hrs to 1300hrs to 1800hrs August 1971 Upper Left BS7527 and Lower Right BS7924. At 0915hrs ARVN are bringing a truck up the Access Road to meet an ARVN patrol to pick up some POWs that were captured north of here. At 0920hrs received report from Brigade that the Americal Division Commander S is in the area and to beware, received from Gilbo. At 0955hrs Air Calvary Box 50, Inferno 59 broke station. At 0958hrs Brigade informed us of coke kids around OP Nui Vong. Wasp 66 wants removed. Message sent to Y 99. Cole kids departed area at 1014hrs. Nation Police Field Force requested for MD 1012hrs at grid BS695600. At 1002hrs Inferno 59 returned to Air Calvary box 50 Americal Rules of engagement fire for fire and weapons and evading. At 1005hrs Americal Division Commander is going into South OP. At 1021hrs Inferno 59 is departing Air Calvary Box 59. At 1100hrs Americal Division Commander (S) conducted monthly Fire Support Base inspection of OP 3, checked into weapons and ammo security, Fire-Base defenses and bunker line Alert procedures and ammunition storage. Overall rating of satisfactory was given and headed north. At 1105hrs Brigade called and informed us Americal Division Commander M in Area. At 1120hrs Nui Vong called and informed TOC that a coke kid came up to the perimeter and informed LT Pribal (Officer in Charge) that he observed 1 of 2 elderly females Vietnamese detainees on 7 August actively planting the mine that blew the 26 Engineer Tank on 7 August. He also stated that she was back in the same location at this time digging around. Recon 1-20 Infantry sent to the area to investigate. Recon 1-20 Infantry picked up two females detainees with negative ID. Back hauled to MO Duc for questioning along with coke kid who observed them planting the mine on 7 August 1971. At 1330hrs LATE SPOT Colonel Q arrived at LZ Liz to discuss turn over of LZ Liz to the 4 ARVN regiment and Inquired as to the possibility of trading LZ Liz for San Juan Hill and toured Bunker line. The 4 ARVN plans are for 1 Company and 2 tubes 105 Artillery on Liz, no date known for turn over, also Colonel Q said it was up to the 2 Division to fix a date with 23 Division. When date is set he will send XO and S-4 to coordinate turnover. He additionally mentioned he will man the North OP, but will only man the South OP if US IOS and Radar remain. At 1320hrs Rattler 13 is down for maintenance. At 1430hrs Message from Brigade 11 August 1100hrs S-2/S-3 conference at LZ Dottie attendance mandatory. At 1500hrs 4 Recon detonated unknown type booby trap results 1 ARVN WIA request US dusty at this time. At 1828hrs LATE SPOT 3-4 ARVN Battalion made contact at 1000hrs with Company size enemy force with results 1 friendly WIA BS755456. At 1530hrs at 091530hrs 2-4 ARVN Battalion spotted 2 VC evading resulting 2 VC KIA, 1 NVA KIA and 1 carbine CIA also request emergency extraction grid BS248508. At 1531hrs 3-4 ARVN Battalion made contact with unknown size enemy force results 1 ARVN WIA, 1 ARVN KIA and Enemy casualties unknown at this time. Gun ships have been request at grid BS756456. At 1657hrs the 3-4 ARVN Battalion made contact with unknown enemy force with results 9 VC KIA, 3 KIA credited to US Gun Ships, CIA 3 AK47, 10 Chi Com grenades at grid BS755456. At 1700hrs Rattler 13 and 25 is on station. At 1720hrs 2-4 ARVN Battalion while on Search and Clear contact with small enemy force results 2 VC KIA at BS904299. At 1800hrs 1-20 Infantry vehicles from 1-20 Infantry inspected. At 1925hrs Message at LZ Dotty at 1730hrs Battalion Commanders, if transportation is needed request before 1200hrs. At 1955hrs MACV Duc Pho Gold report 100800hrs August 1970 lasting 1 day. RF 169, National Police Field Force and PRU with US on the ground, will continue work Area of Operation: BS7041 to BS7241 to BS8040 to BS8240 to start will advance from the south air mobile PZ BS793383, LZ BS813408 and LZ BS817406. Intelligence 20 to 30 VC/VCI local force VC moved from Van Trough # Tra Cau area to this area in the last day and ½. At 2005hrs Colonel Que will be able to meet Colonel Goodwin at 0900hrs tomorrow at LZ Bronco. At 2155hrs MACV Duc Pho 2-4 ARVN while conducting an eagle flight observed a squad of VC attacking hamlet chief of Dien Truong. They engaged the area with US gun ships and inserted 2 companies resulting in 1. Hamlet chief WIA, 7 VC KIA, CIA 1 M-16, 1 AK47 and 1 carbine and is US confirmed at BS886295. At 2155hrs MACV Duc Pho PF 189 PF platoon 1SGT was sniped at by unknown size enemy force resulting in 1 PF WIA is US confirmed at BS888276. At 2155hrs Nui Vong reports 1. PF 109 and PF 273 Intelligence 183 VC Company is holding 2 US prisoners at grid BS664585. 2. Nighthawk 092020hrs August 1971 reports took fire from grid BS653581 will check these area out tonight by using 105 Artillery on Nui Vong. Legend: 1st Platoon 59, 2nd Platoon 56, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 97 and CO-29.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai. At 1720hrs in regards to the AGI held in Chu Lai, following information can be reported at this time: 1-20 Infantry received either outstanding or satisfactory in all areas inspected. The Drug Program pleased the IG, all motor pool received a satisfactory and the Mess Hall outstanding. Mail Room did very well rating is unknown. Only gigs noted were 1. The rear must keep a historical journal. 2. Meal cards for the companies need updating. 3. 1 Officer was on orders for 2 jobs and jobs, position are supposed to be held by two separate personnel.
Alpha Company

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and the Access Road. At 2340hrs LZ Liz Alert due to inadvertently firing of a Red Star Cluster, Alert judged satisfactory by Hill Commander.
Bravo Company
August 9, 1971
At 0815hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon HP patrol is moving to BS640498. At 1120hrs Bravo Company at Nui Vong called and informed TOC that a coke Kid came up to the perimeter and informed LT Pribal (Officer In Charge) that he observed 1 of the 2 elderly females Vietnamese detainees on 7 August actively planting the mine. Recon 1-20 Infantry is sent to area to investigate and detained 2 female detainees with negative ID’s. They where back hauled to Mo Duc for questioning along with coke kid witness who observed them planting the mine on August 7, 1971. At 1245hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon with Command Post patrol closed on BS643497. At 1920hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon with Command Post has closed on Night Defense Position at BS645497, also received Intelligence on possible US POW at BS664575.
Charlie Company
August 9, 1971
At 1145hrs Charlie Company is in their Patrol Base at BS671489. At 1504hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon moving out to BS672489 and 1546hrs closed on BS671489. At 1559hrs while on patrol Charlie Company 1st Platoon found 2 empty medical vials and a small kerosene lamp appeared to been there 2 to 3 months at grid BS679492. At 1955hrs Charlie Company 1st and 2nd Platoon moves to their Night Defense Position at BS654487. At 2035hrs Charlie Company change their Night Defense Position to BS670486 and at 2106hrs Charlie Company spotted moving lights at grid BS659509 fired medium tubes and will not check area because of terrain and distance shot 30 155 HE rounds at BS659509.
Delta Company

At 0720hrs Delta Company will stay in Night Defense Position till after re supply will stay into Night Defense Position till after resupply will be 100 meters to east of LZ. At 1359hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon at checkpoint 1 grid BS649486 and by 1535hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon at checkpoint 2 at BS654486 and then by 1955hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon and all other elements have closed on the 1st Platoon in their Night Defense Position at BS654487.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
