Headquarters and Headquarter Company
November 8, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Cork and will continued to work with ARVN units their Area of Operations in OPERATION VERNON LAKE II. At 0835hrs Aerial Scouts at BS457533-BS461532 received heavy automatic weapons fire and observed huts in trees, negative hits went on station. At 1050hrs Aerial Scouts at BS388559 received moderate automatic weapons fire from about grid, returned fire with negative results, are going to put in an Air Strike. Also at BS375567 given there is a village with enemy in it the friendly on ground knew about it and going to put in an Air Strike. At 1030hrs Aerial Scouts at BS377564 received small arms fire negative hits at altitude 500’. Area of Operation extension requested for 11 Brigade Vernon Lake II BS BS3860 northwest along Song Tra Khuc River to BS3662 then southwest to BS337600 and then south along Song Re River to BS3455 then east to BS3855. Time: ASAP to DATE Time 102400hrs November. Reasons: to establish a 1.Fire Support Base and 2. Extend Combat Sweeps and Search operations as per telecom with Major Powel and CPT Medina at 2130hrs. Passed to 11 Brigade CPT Hyman at 2142hrs approval is posted.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1420hrs E Troop at Bridge 95 1 person was cleaning a 45 caliber pistol went to clean weapon discharged hitting 1 US in left stomach area, Dust Off completed at 1430hrs. At 1835hrs LZ Bronco received 8-9 rounds 81mm and 82mm mortar round with results 3 US WIA, on bunker line # 10-11. Suspected Mortar location is BS815406 and BS845354 returned fire with 8’ went to condition yellow at 1930hrs. Headquarters Company reports WHA E-4 Danny Hings chest wound, E-4 John Pouliot frag in face, and Cesnovar frag right arm.

 

Alpha Company
November 8, 1968

Alpha Company continued their Search and Destroy operations in their Area of Operation. At 1029hrs Alpha Company at BS459571 engages unknown size enemy force, with result 1 US KHA and 4 WHA request Dust Off and also report CIA 1 Carbine and received sporadic sniper fire throughout the Area of Operation. The Battalion continued combat sweeps and at 1205hrs Alpha Company at BS462572 received small arms fire from 2 to 3 locations with negative casualties. At 1900hrs CPL GARY RAY COOPER LISTED AS KHA. 1LT John R. McNown assumed command of Alpha Company.

 

Bravo Company
November 8, 1968

Bravo Company continued their Combat Search and Sweeps in the Area of Operations had some sporadic sniper fire most of the day. At 0930hrs Bravo Company at BS464578 found 5 small huts, will destroy and at 1255hrs Bravo Company reports their location at BS473579. At 1900hrs Bravo and Alpha Company join in their Night Defense Position at BS464582. PFC Robert W. Baton injured on November 8, 1968 evac to 312th evac Hospital at 1800hrs.

 

Charlie Company
November 8, 1968

Charlie Company continued to conduct Combat Sweeps operations in their Area of Operation and at 0950hrs at BS460597 observed a small campfire searched area with negative results. At 1255hrs Charlie Company reports their located at BS456596. At 1835hrs Charlie Company has moved into their Night Defense Position at BS468596.

 

Delta Company
November 8, 1968

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Cork. At 0940hrs Delta Company 1 US injured by a water balder rolling over him, broken right leg and dislocated right knee, Dust Off to Quang Nagi completed at 1010hrs.

 

Echo Company
November 8, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Cork where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Cork. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Cork where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). At 1255hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS442617. At 1900hrs Recon Platoon reports their Night Defense Position at BS444624. SP4 David M. Tighe was evac to 312th Evac Hospital at 2000hrs sick.
