At 0420hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line Inspection: # 5 was OK, # 6 was OK, # 17 was OK and # 1 was OK. At 0804hrs LZ Liz Access Road is now open. At 0920hrs LZ Liz North OP request routine Dust Off for 1 US with broken ankle, Echo Company Line #T 7895, completed at 0925hrs by Dust Off 16. At 1005hrs From Division TOC to all Battalions: Commencing 081200 May 1971 no offensive action will be taken except in response to enemy initiated action. Does no pertain to defensive and patrols around US positions for protection, termination of this truce to be announced. At 1045hrs 1-20 Infantry tomorrow only mission essentials traffic will be sent on highway 1 on 9 May 1971, minimum # of vehicles to be announced. At 1115hrs To: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie Companies and Recon Nui Vong, from 1-20 Infantry S-3: Inform this station when our unit is in a posture to comply with directions regarding truce. Insure all elements are on high ground that is easily defendable, and all troops have been informed of directives regarding truce. At 1900hrs from Brigade no vehicles will be dispatched from LZ Bronco on 9 May 1971, no exceptions will be made there will be no vehicle travel on Highway 1 tomorrow. At 1226hrs MACV Mo Duc, OP wink requests priority Dust Off for 1 PF, stepped on a land mine and has multiple frag wounds to legs (possible lost of 1 foot). At 1220hrs To Brigade S-3 from 1-20 infantry S-3, Under the Truce directive currently in effect- does a company moving from 1 location to another violate the truce directive? Specifically the Alpha Company Plan moving from LZ Liz to Area of Operations to the southwest. Need clarification, but understand concept of defensive patrolling and defensive operations. At 1530hrs 4-4 ARVN at BS751439 found approximately 13 tons of rice, all unpolished. Estimate 11 tons were buried and 2 tons lying around in hootch’s. Rice buried was wrapped in plastic. ARVN say majority of people were VCS, say they move rice into village at night utilizing women. Also say is a resupply point for VC/NVA in the area. At 1555hrs Primo 2 is on station at this time. At 1900hrs From Brigade, no vehicles will be dispatched from LZ Bronco on 9 May 1971, no exceptions will be made, and there will be no vehicle travel on Highway 1 tomorrow. At 2021hrs TMF String 295, Target B has 3 to 5 personnel moving east at 3 miles per hour, negative metal confirmation and negative clearance Code 1. At 2027hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Alpha 9, Charlie 5, and Bravo 0, Recon 0 for a total of 14. At 2101hrs TMF Defensive Target 082100hrs String 295 target A spotted 3 to 5 personnel moving west to east at 3 miles per hour, negative metal confirmation and negative clearance proximity Ville. At 2356hrs TMF String 295 Target B has 2 to 3 personnel moving west to east at 3 miles per hour, negative metal confirmation and negative clearance proximity of Ville. Legend: 1st Platoon 58, 2nd Platoon 16, 3rd Platoon 83, 4th Platoon 42, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 8, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0420hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line Inspection: # 5 was OK, # 6 was OK, # 17 was OK and # 1 was OK. At 0750hrs Alpha Company Command Post, 1st and 4th Platoon moving to BS746383. Alpha Company used Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1230hrs Alpha Company Command Post with 4th and 1st Platoons in Patrol Base at BS742388, other elements moving at this time. At 1422hrs Alpha Company at BS742386 1st Platoon patrol is going to the last 2 checkpoints only. At 2023hrs Alpha Company all elements in Night Defense Position Command Post, 1st and 4th Platoon at BS740389, 3rd Platoon at BS745386 and 2nd Platoon at BS738394 will have 9 Mechanical Ambush out. At 2037hrs Alpha Company the 2nd Platoon while moving to Night Defense Position found one destroyed plastic grounds sensor.

 

Bravo Company
May 8, 1971

Bravo Company used Patrol Bases and multiple Patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0630hrs Bravo Company and Recon reports staying in Night Defense Position and using it for Patrol Base BS664510. At 0637hrs Bravo Company Command Post 2nd and 4th Platoons is in their Patrol Base vicinity BS661520 with 3rd Platoon 3rd Platoon is moving to BS686514. At 1107hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS690517 found 1 Booby trap 155 round with trip wire device and smoke grenade firing device, was about 10’ off a trail with tripwire across trail. At 1542hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon while on a search and clear patrol vicinity BS662518 found one chi com grenade lying next to a trail. The grenade was not booby trap, approximately age was 20-30 days old, and 2nd Platoon blew it in place. At 1947hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon and Recon reports their Night Defense Position is at BS663514. At 2007hrs Bravo Company 2nd, 4th Platoons and Command reports in their Night Defense Position at BS663517.

 

Charlie Company
May 8, 1971

Charlie Company is using Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1618hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving to BS708457. At 1941hrs Charlie Company all elements in Night Defense Positions Command Post and 3rd Platoon at BS717463, 3rd Platoon ambush BS717465, 1st Platoon at BS725414, 1st Platoon ambush at BS722420 and 2nd Platoon at BS710449 with ambush at BS702452 with 5 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Delta Company
May 8, 1971

Delta Company continued their multiple Patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0845hrs Delta Company Command Post element at grid BS727473 found 1 booby trap in a hedgerow, pressure release, a 105 round and blew it in place. At 1030hrs Delta Company at BS727470 and at 1200hrs Truce is under way and no offensive action to be taken only defense response. Delta Company closed on LZ Liz and take over the Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
May 8, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At Bravo Company Recon staying in their Night Defense Position for Patrol base at BS664510. LZ Liz North OP request routine Dust Off for 1 US with broken ankle, Echo Company Line #T 7895, completed at 0925hrs by Dust Off 16. At 1155hrs Recon observed 1 VC at a distance of 450 meters wearing black on black with pack and weapon, individual was moving west to east was engaged with M-72 and small arms, evaded to the east, thought to be a 1 man Recon checking on GI’s. At 1950hrs Recon Platoon and Bravo Company 3rd Platoon reports they are in their Night Defense Position at BS738394.
