Headquarters and Headquarter Company
June 8, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0010hrs Alpha Company LT Waugh inspected bunkers 5, 6, 9 all OK. At 0030hrs Saber 46 is on station to check radar sighting at BS733420, working Box 63, negative results. At 0333hrs going to refuel and at 0445hrs Saber 46 is working Box 65, breaking station at 0511hrs with negative findings. At 0109hrs LZ Liz on practice alert: Alpha Company 100% at 0115hrs, Charlie battery 6-11 Artillery 100% at 0110hrs, Charlie Battery 1-82 Artillery 100% at 0116hrs. Reaction Force at 0113hrs, Access Road at 0111, North OP at 0112hrs, South OP at 0120hrs cease fire at 0121hrs Alert is over at 0138hrs. At 0140hrs TO Brigade From Commanding Officer 1-20 Infantry Practice Alert conducted 080109 June 1971. All units attained 100% by 0138hrs. Alert rated satisfactory, response was good. At 0410hrs Alpha Company LT Welch inspected Bunker # 3, 4 and 5 were checked all satisfactory. At 0430hrs Alpha Company SGT Degley inspected 14, 15 and 16 all OK. At 0750hrs LZ Liz Access Road is now clear at this time. At 1210hrs 1-20 Infantry Helix 35 is on station at this time. At 1300hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 23 is on station for resupply. At 1451hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 6 is on station at this time and broke station at 1557hrs. At 1600hrs TO Brigade S-3 from 1-20 Infantry S-3 request UH-1 Air Craft 100800hrs June for 2 hours to take new Liaison Officer to Gia Vuc and Ba To and insure good coordination is good and can pick up 4-21 Infantry Liaison Officer at the same location and return to San Juan Hill or LZ Bronco. This Aircraft in addition to normal resupply time since this is a special situation. S-3 this location will take Liaison Officer out and made final coordination. At 1800hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 23 broke station and at 1840hrs Primo 6 is on station and breaks station at 1917hrs. At 1957hrs MACV Mo Duc, PF night locations BS708587 and BS702585, these locations are a result of today’s ball game. At 2100hrs Saber Black on station for NH Box 67, broke station at 2130hrs with negative findings. At 2130hrs on station for Box 63, broke station at 2202hrs with negative findings. At 2110hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Bravo 4, Charlie 7, Delta 4 and Recon 1 for a total of 16 out. At 2135hrs Alpha Company on LZ Liz SFC Wright inspected Bunker 13 negative knowledge of claymore positions, 14 satisfactory, 15 was not manned and 16 satisfactory except with no commo. At 2305hrs Nui Vong reports 25 to 30 VC with packs and weapons at BS6845847 moving north engaged with 4.2 Mortar and Artillery 105mm and Nighthawk was requested. At 2348hrs Alpha Company SGT Gibson inspected bunkers 15, 16, 17 all were satisfactory. Legend: 1st Platoon 34, 2nd Platoon 05, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 78, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
June 8, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0010hrs Alpha Company Bunker inspected by LT Waugh. At 0109hrs LZ Liz Alert Alpha Company at 100% at 0115hrs Alert over 0138hrs satisfactory. LZ Liz bunker line is inspected by LT Welch, and later at 0430hrs SGT Degley check bunker line. At 2135hrs Alpha Company on LZ Liz SFC Wright inspected Bunker 13 negative knowledge of their claymore positions, 14 satisfactory, 15 was not manned, 16 satisfactory (except it has no commo). At 2348hrs Alpha Company SGT Gibson inspected bunkers all satisfactory.

 

Bravo Company
June 8, 1971

Bravo Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple Day Ambushes and patrolling in there Area of Operation. At 0708hrs Bravo Company all ambushed have closed, 1st Platoon in Patrol Base at BS708482 and 1st Platoon patrol is moving out to BS709492. At 0804hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving to BS695457. At 0811hrs Bravo Company 3rd platoon is moving to BS717472. At 0846hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon closed on BS708482. At 2036hrs Bravo Company reports all elements in Night Defense Position Command Post with 3rd Platoon at BS716465, 1st and 4th Platoons is at BS695460 and will have 4 Mechanical Ambushes out.

 

Charlie Company
June 8, 1971

Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0801hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon Patrol is moving to BS704383. At 1155hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon patrol closed on BS720428. At 1900hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon at BS715403, Command Post and 3rd Platoon is at BS716465, with 1st and 4th Platoons at BS710488. At 2002hrs 2nd Platoon sending out a patrol to vicinity BS728397 to check out an IOS sighting of 2 VCNVA at 1940hrs in a wood line at above grid and closed back at 2110hrs and Charlie Company has 7 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Delta Company
June 8, 1971

Delta Company continued using Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0930hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 1, vicinity BS633546 and 1st Platoon patrol is moving to BS630566. At 1213hrs Delta Company Command Post while in their Patrol Base found 5 canisters that that appear to been shipping canisters, they were 2 ½ ‘ long, 90mm in diameter, four were green plastic with metal tops, and 1 was all metal, with Russian writing. Used possible RR, approximated 3 months old found vicinity BS642550. At 2008hrs Delta Company reports Night Defense Position location 1st and 4th Platoon BS643564 and Command Post and 2nd Platoon at BS634550 with 4 Mechanical Ambush out. At 2305hrs Nui Vong Delta Company 3rd Platoon reported 25-30 VC with packs and weapons at BS684584 moving north engaged with 4.2" and 105mm and gun ship Nighthawk is large part of response.

 

Echo Company
June 8, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0644hrs Recon is in their Patrol Base at vicinity 758404. At 0800hrs Recon morning patrol is moving to BS750380. At 0828hrs Recon bought 1 105mm round from Vietnamese man age 12, paid 4 cans C rations, blew in place at BS758404 and at 0837hrs closed on BS758404. At 0955hrs Recon at 0850hrs spotted 1 personnel with pack at BS739395, IOS on south OP picked up this individual and Recon moved out to check area. At 0940hrs South OP spotted 7 personnel at BS733412, 2 with packs, 1 in green uniform, no weapons, lost sight of them in a tree line. Recon had negative findings and closing at this time. At 1118hrs Recon in their Patrol Base at BS758404. At 1938hrs Recon is moving to their Night Defense position at BS740400.
