Headquarters and Headquarter Company
June 8, 1969

Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Battalion Headquarters is located at LZ LIZ and at 0150hrs activity become very heavy in their Duc Pho Area of Operations with LZ Liz under attach. At 0330hrs Bravo Company check out the area and found 11 NVA KIA, 3 RPG Launchers, and 2 AK-47 along with 25-30 Chi Com grenades, RPG rounds and banderole torpedoes. At 0345hrs 1/20 Infantry reported that they still have NVA inside and requested flare ships and was approved and at 0425hrs small fire fights continued on LZ LIZ. At 0425hrs S-3 1-20 Infantry reports to 11th Brigade that Recon Platoon would be dropped in southeast of Bronco at first light. At 0600hrs Bravo Company on LZ LIZ, reports checked perimeter found 2 NVA KIA and Captured 1 other NVA and Artillery on hill is taking mortar at this time. At 0830hrs 1-20 Infantry Battalion reports the total for overnight action 12 NVA KIA, 1 NVA CIA, 2 AK47, 4 AK47 magazines, 2 RPG Launchers, 6 rounds of RPG, 60 Chi Com grenades, 1 roll Como Wire, 3 Potato Mashers and 1 Booby Trap LAW. At 0840hrs Bravo Company using Tracker Dogs flushed 2 VCS and engaged with small arms fire and called artillery with negative results.

Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued to carry out their Mission of general support for the Battalion. At 0155hrs to 0330hrs Duc Pho started the chain of events by receiving satchel charges and mortars. Then Bronco Base Defense reports received 3-5 140 rockets, 10-14 rounds of 82mm mortar and 8 rounds RPG, unknown amount of 120mm mortars round with results 2 US KIA and 8 US WIA enemy grids BS828363 and BS824368. At 0230-0430hrs C 1-82 artillery reports 1 US KIA and 5 WIA Dust Off completed at 0630hrs. Echo Company reports SP4 Edward M. Mullen was evac to 312th Evac Hospital with frag wounds (Possible Recon Platoon). At 0620hrs Recon 1-20 Infantry completed Combat Assault at 0617hrs into BS823367 and conducted a Recon in Force to LZ Bronco. At 0720hrs Bronco reports that at 0320hrs base Defense Bunker 31 had 3 hits from 75mm rounds with negative casualties.

 

Alpha Company
June 8, 1969

Alpha Company conducts a Recon in Force vicinity BS761389. At 1610hrs Alpha Company found a tunnel big enough to stand a Mortar tube and tunnel was destroyed. At 1848hrs at BS763383 Alpha Company receives small and automatic weapons fire and 60mm mortars results is 9 US WIA (E) and WHA (M) after Dust Off moved to BS769381 and they established their Night Defense Position. On June 8, 1969 in the 11th Brigade Area of Operation much action was witnessed. In early morning hours, Duc Pho started the chain of events by receiving satchel charges, mortars after which Fire Support Base Bronco took an unknown amount of 120mm mortar, 75RR and RPG rounds. Two other Fire Support Bases in the Area of Operation came under attach (LZ Debbie and LZ Liz) at approximately the same time. As the day progressed, 2 Fire Support Bases were again attacked at mid day. Alpha Company reports SGT DAVID ALAN BROWN LISTED AS KHA and Medical Evac PFC Richard A. Willey, PFC James H. McGresvy, SGT Whitman Alvin, SP4 Leroy A. Peters, SP4 David F Capps, SP4 Michael Chandler and PFC John F. Harran.

 

Bravo Company
June 8, 1969

At 0330hrs Bravo Company checked out area found at total of 11 NVA, Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. VA KIA, 3 RPG Launchers, 2 AK47, 25 to 30 Chi Com grenades, RPG and Bangelore torpedoes. At 0345hrs Bravo reported that they still have NVA inside the wire, Request flare ship approved and at 0435hrs Bravo Company has a firefight going on inside the wire. At 0600hrs Bravo Company on Liz the perimeter is OK found 2 NVA KIA, 1 CIA, and Artillery on hill taking mortar at this time. Total for Day LZ Liz Report 12 NVA Killed, 1 NVA CIA 2 AK 47, 4 AK47 magazines, 2 RPG launcher, 6 rounds of RPG, 60 Chi Com grenades, 1 roll of commo wire, 3 potato mashers, 1 Booby trap law. Bravo Company swept area at BS766424 using tracker dogs flushed out 2 VC engaged with small arms fire with Negative Results.

 

Charlie Company
June 8, 1969

On 8 June in the 11th Brigade Area of Operation much action was witnessed, in the early morning hours, Duc Pho started the chain of events by receiving satchel charges and mortars, after Fire Support Base Bronco took an unknown amount of 120mm mortar, 75rr rounds and RPG rounds. Two other Fire Support Bases (LZ Liz and LZ Debbie) came under attack at approximately the same time. As the day progressed 2 Fire Support Bases were again attacked at mid day. Evening hours in the 1-20 Infantry brought contact for two companies and a Fire Base of the 4-3 Infantry LZ Dottie received incoming ended the day. Charlie Company at BS843417 at 1000hrs and at 1920hrs Charlie Company received small arms fire and 60mm-mortar fire with negative casualties or damage.

 

Delta Company
June 8, 1969

At 0807hrs Delta Company is at BS729392 and set up their Day Logger with saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. On 8 June in the 11th Brigade Area of Operation much action was witnessed, in the early morning hours, Duc Pho started the chain of events by receiving satchel charges and mortars, after Fire Support Base Bronco took an unknown amount of 120mm mortar, 75rr rounds and RPG rounds. Two other Fire Support Bases (LZ Don and LZ Debbie) came under attack at approximately the same time. As the day progressed 2 Fire Support Bases were again attacked at mid day. Evening hours brought contact for two companies, in the 1-20 Infantry Battalion with a Fire Base of the 4-3 Infantry Dottie received incoming ended the day. 1LT Lowell Jones was evac to 312th Evac Hospital.

 

Echo Company
June 8, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon informed by the S-3 that they would be dropped in the southeast of LZ Bronco at first light. At 0540hrs Recon Platoon pick-up at Liz at 0617hrs at 823367, Recon in Force to the north to Fire Support Base Bronco at 0848hrs Recon found 3 fox holes, 3 empty RPG canisters, 13 canisters of 82mm and trenches at 821369. At 1000hrs Recon Platoon report closed on LZ Bronco.
