Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0110hrs Blue Ghost 40 is on station for Box 65. At 0132hrs Blue Ghost 40 breaking station negative findings. At 0325hrs South OP received 1 incoming M-79 round from the Northwest approximately BS74454215. Spotted 1-3 personnel evading to the northwest engaged with M-16, M-60 and 4.2, negative results. I US WIA minor frag wounds, Michael Mahoney negative Dust Off required. At 0800hrs S-4 Dolphin 215 is on station for re supply. At 0834hrs Primo 4 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 0920hrs MACV Mo Duc vicinity BS722463, relay Urgent Dust Off for 6 PF whose vehicle hit a mine, 2 have traumatic amputations, 2 with multiple frag wounds, all are litter cases, completed at 0940hrs. At 1047hrs MACV Mo Duc at 0900hrs a 1 ton truck from 116 PF group of Duc Phung OP struck a mine at BS722643. Truck was thrown 25 meters and turned over. Box type mine, made a hole 4’ deep and 9’ feet in diameter. Possibly a command detonated, left rear tire hit mine, WIA where priority, 2 Urgent WIA and Dust Off completed at 0940hrs. At 1055hrs MACV Mo Duc vicinity BS742575, 1 RF from 712 RF Company wandered off by himself without his weapon. RF was shot and killed by an unknown VC element. RF reports that no equipment was lost RF sent reactionary force to check the area and found the KIA. They received small arms fire from BS734580. They engaged the area with small arms with no results. At 1420hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 191 on station to take sling loads to OP Wood stock and off station at 1505hrs. At 1500hrs Primo 2 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 1450hrs Helix 34 is on station to Visual Recon mounted from 57 south to 50 spotted area of heavy foot traffic vicinity BS6543, broke station at 1520hrs. At 1800hrs S-4 Re supply ship is breaking station at this time. Legend: 1st Platoon 71-76, 2nd Platoon 91-96, 3rd Platoon 41-46, 4th Platoon 01-06, CO-08.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
January 8, 1971
At 0705hrs Alpha Company vicinity 769571 requests Priority Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese civilian male, who hit booby trap hand frag wound to lower extremities completed at 0730hrs. At 0730hrs Alpha Company in reference Dust Off was 1 US M-26 hand frag with trip wire across a trail. Vietnamese personnel was moving south on trail when he detonated Booby Trap. Male was between 60 to 70 years of age, fragmentation to lower legs and abdomen, wearing purple and white and did have an ID. At 1905hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon at 727445, waiting to move to their ambush location spotted 1 VC with weapons moving to southwest, they engaged at 50 meters and are now moving to sweep area with negative finding. Alpha Company moves is moving into LZ Liz for Security Mission.
Bravo Company

Bravo Company used multiple patrols in their Area of Operation today. At 1310hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon patrol closed at BS638558, 2nd Platoon closed at BS638555 and 3rd Platoon patrol closed at BS638558. At 1730hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 3 vicinity BS732444. At 1840hrs Bravo Company searching area of Night Defense Position vicinity BS640563 1st Platoon found 1 booby trap, 4 to 5 pounds of Petna in a can with smoke grenade fuse and trip wire located in a hedgerow in an old Night Defense Position, and blown it in place. Bravo Company will have multiple Ambushes out tonight.
Charlie Company

At 0755hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS707558, reference spot report at BS072205, 3rd Platoon patrol checked area of last night contact and found dog tracks heading away from their location. They are remaining in area to check it out further. At 1025hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon is moving out for BS675530. At 1445hrs Charlie Company at OP Pax vicinity BS693538, request routine Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese child, with minor frag wounds as results of booby trap vicinity BS683549 completed at 1507hrs. At 1545hrs Charlie Company OP Pax vicinity BS693538, 1st Platoon was shown a booby trap by a Vietnamese child, it was located 200 meters west of OP Pax in an open area. It was a 60mm mortar round with a pressure type, firing device approximately 3 months old, they paid the child 2 cans C-Rations and destroyed in place. At 1825hrs Charlie Company Command Post at OP Wink found 1 155 HE Dud round side of the perimeter and blew it in place. Charlie 1st Platoon at OP Pax bought 1 M-79 HE round and M-67 Hand frag from a 10 year old Vietnamese boy, he was paid 1 meal of C Rations.
Delta Company

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1200hrs Delta Company has moved from LZ Liz into a heavy patrolling of their Area of Operation. At 1200hrs Delta Company searching area of insertion vicinity BS702483, Command Post found marker on a trail. It was made of wood, triangular in shape with a cross member point north. It appeared to be 7 to 10 days old, continuing to search the area. At 1250hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 3 vicinity BS739570. At 1415hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon is moving to BS707480. At 1515hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol closed at BS753568, 3rd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 2 at BS711478 and 2nd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 1 at BS704483. At 1705hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol checkpoint 3 vicinity BS758576, 2nd Platoon at checkpoint 1 at BS699482 and 1st Platoon patrol closed on BS753568. At 1930hrs Delta Company reported location Command Post 3rd Platoon and 4th Platoon BS703482, 3rd Platoon ambush BS705484, 1st Platoon BS753568, BS754573, 2nd Platoon BS703483 and BS701484.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1931hrs Recon Platoon in their ambush location vicinity BS713435.
