Headquarters and Headquarter Company
February 8, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0152hrs Bronco is under mortar attack in vicinity artillery hill, 8 60mm rounds northeast edge of LZ Bronco BS813391. At 0205hrs MACV Major Smith reports political clearance is given to fire in area BS805395. At 1435hrs 1-20 Infantry ARVN at BS793410, 600 meters of the new bridge ARVN troops contacted VC with results 10 VC KIA, no further activity.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0145hrs LZ Bronco Base received approximately 8 incoming mortar rounds from BS832397 and response with 50 caliber fire and counter Mortar fire. At 1830hrs Bunker 02 thru 04 had had insides removed from bunkers. Over half the sand bags on the outside of 02 have been removed. At 2100hrs PF vicinity BS801381 in contact with unknown size element at present the District Chief is firing mortars. At 2241hrs MACV called requesting we open the main gate to allow them to bring in a wounded Vietnamese girl caught in crossfire between the PF and the VC with results reported by PF was 3 VC KIA and 1 CIA. Military Police open the gate at 2250hrs.

 

Alpha Company
February 8, 1968

At 0815hrs Alpha Company at BS876535, found a tunnel, entrance was by a hedgerow covered with a wicker basket, 7’ deep, ran in 20’ and turned and ran for another 150’, engineers called in to blow it. At 1400hrs Alpha Company at BS880530 and by 1915hrs moved into their Night Defense Position at BS892323 with ambushes at BS885325 and BS894316.

 

Bravo Company
February 8, 1968

At 1345hrs Bravo Company at BS803404. While working east of highway observed mass exodus of people from the village to the highway then moving south. PF report many VC in area 1 Platoon Bravo Company moving west to try and block. At 1345hrs 2nd Platoon at BS777411 found 1 M-1 Carbine hidden in bushes along with some clothes, SN 3157668of Carbine. At 1400hrs Bravo Company has reported their locations 1st Platoon at BS808407, 2nd Platoon at BS778411 and 3rd Platoon at BS790408. At 1400hrs Bravo Company spotted 1 individual at BS844395 and 2 individual at BS842389. At 1915hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon at BS815400 with ambushes at BS817401, 2nd Platoon at BS795405, and 3rd Platoon at BS781409 with ambush at BS782411. Bravo Company OP on MT Tripoli at BS849389 reports seeing fires from direction of 2900 called meters 2000 to 2500 meters grid BS861365.

 

Charlie Company
February 8, 1968

Charlie Company (-) has the Security Mission for LZ Uptight. . Charlie Company at 1225hrs at 719801, Charlie Company received sniper fire 1 US slightly wounded no Dust Off needed. At 1420hrs Charlie Company at BS721809 made contact requested 2 sharks, had 1 WHA called Dust Off completed at 1432hrs. At 1805hrs Charlie Company reports their night positions LZ Uptight and E Troop with Charlie and Bravo bridges. SP4 Thomas Cummings attached to 2nd Surgical Hospital Chu Lai.

 

Delta Company
February 8, 1968

At 1400hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon at BS892399 and BS892395. At 1915hrs Delta Company and Recon are located at LZ Thunder and taken over the Security Mission for LZ Thunder. CPT Charles S. Seketa assumed command of Delta Company.

 

Echo Company
February 8, 1968

Echo Company and 4.2 platoon and radar platoon where located on LZ Thunder to provide direct support to the Battalion. Recon Platoon at 1400hrs is now located at BS860308 as they continued their Mission of Security for the Road to LZ Carentan. At 1805hrs Recon reports their location at LZ Thunder.
