Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0945hrs Charlie Company 39th Engineers at BS721581 a vehicle C-6 hit amine in shoulder of road, approximately 25-30 pounds of unknown explosive and firing device was buried 2 ½’ in ground, results 3 US KHA, Dust Off, US and re sweep the road. At 1530hrs Brigade S-3 to 1-20 Infantry S-3 to continue planning an operation for the seizure of the VC hospital in their vicinity, 1-20 Infantry should get all the intelligence possible on this hospital as the Operation will not be approved until it is definitely established, the hospital is there. At 2210hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC reports E Troop at BS887288, Bridge 104 received 10-20 rounds small arms fire, PF returned fire with 60mm mortars and small arms with negative assessment, negative casualties on Bridge. Charlie Company 39 Engineer at reports atBS572584 reports CPT Phillips H. Izard, SP5 Marcus Peter Anderson and SP4 Melvin Lloyd McArthur LISTED AS KHA.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
August 8, 1968
Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder with one element at BS855265. At 0921hrs Alpha Company at BS855350 found 1 ton of unpolished rice in crocks, females in the area report that 10 VC spent the night in area last night. At 0925hrs at BS855352 Alpha engaged 1 VC evading result is 1 VC KIA. At 1410hrs Alpha Company reports their location Alpha 10 and 20 elements are on LZ Thunder, with 32 at BS771407 and 31 at BS855265. At 1433hrs at BS858354 detained 4 VCS in Pada, Nation Police said they are VC evac to LZ Bronco. At 1826hrs Alpha Company at LZ Thunder with ambushes at BS855265, BS884336, and BS879308.
Bravo Company
August 8, 1968
Bravo Company reports their location at LZ Bronco for refitting and preparing to re join the Duc Pho Area of Operation with the 1-20 Light Infantry.
Charlie Company
August 8, 1968
At 0830hrs Charlie Company reports element location 10 at BS852363, 20 at BS862358, and 30 and Command Post at BS854358. At 0857hrs Charlie Company at BS855365 detained 1 VCS with no ID had a roll of trip flare wire. At 1403hrs Charlie Company reports their location at BS807355. At 1826hrs Charlie Company is moving into their Night Defense Position at BS789353 with ambushes at BS798353 and BS799343.
Delta Company
August 8, 1968
Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Charlie Brown. At 0818hrs Delta Company at BS922151 detained 1 VCS, no ID at same location found a fatigue uniform. At 0050hrs the mission of 3rd Platoon has been completed and the Navy Survey Party has released the 3rd Platoon from their Security Mission and they return to Delta Company LZ Security Missions. At 1826hrs Delta Company Night Defense Position at BS908196 with ambush at BS930140 and at 2045hrs Delta Company at BS930140 observed 2 VCS moving from west to east while moving to ambush site, detained 1 VCS dressed in black and about 30 years old.
Echo Company
August 8, 1968
Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). At 1403hrs Recon Platoon is located at BS763334. At 1605hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS761333. At 1600hrs Delta Company Engineers at BS867316 reference spot report, Enemy slice in landline. EM checking landline running to the top of LZ Thunder discovered a splice running down the hill. He pulled and cut the line, then came down to report it. We went back to top of Thunder to trace the line and upon reaching the spot could not find the wire again. At 1720hrs 1-20 Infantry Area of Operation extension from grid BS7327 north to boundary and east to boundary purpose for Recon Platoon to move into area and try to located VC hospital, time will be 090600hrs to 130800hrs August 1968. At 1826hrs Recon Platoon will have ambushes at BS759339 & BS754323.
