Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0500hrs Brigade today is conversion day, all units are to get out their C day SOP for implications at 070630hrs notify all sub units ASAP, message passed to all Companies and Rear. At 0640hrs 1-20 Infantry AMC on Stations and at 0700hrs Birds on station, Battalion Commander departed LZ Liz for Surge Operations 1 PZ 0718hrs Charlie 54 to BS682594 2 LZ 0718hrs was Charlie 84 to BS680580, 3 0733hrs was Charlie 34 to BS690590, 4 0743hrs was Charlie W to BS690590, Broke Station to refuel then 5 0842hrs was Recon to BS699566, 6 0910hrs was Bravo 54 to BS735615, 7 0915hrs was Bravo 84 to BS727613, 8 0920hrs was Bravo 34 to BS734622, 9 0933hrs was Delta 54 to Liz, 10 0947hrs was Delta 34 to Liz, Broke Station to refuel, 11 1017hrs was Delta 84 to Liz, 12 1031hrs was Delta W to Liz, 13. 1044hrs was Alpha 84 to 754557, 14 1057hrs was Alpha 34 to 74554, 15 1112hrs was Alpha 54 at BS740575, 16 1130hrs was Alpha W to BS745554, 17 1141hrs was Recon to Liz. At 1150hrs the Surge Operation completed, ships released and Battalion Commander returned to LZ Liz. At 0822hrs Brigade PF 243 is at BS831836 working area BS7743 to BS7943 to BS7942 to BS7740, RF 147 working BS8142 to BS8241 to BS7140, RF 169 also PF 261 working BS8637 to BS6737 to BS8630 to BS8735, PF 180 with PF 175 and PF 186 working BS8333 to BS8731 to BS8331 above elements working indicated areas 7 October 1970. At 1232hrs Brigade from CPT Mullen request tentative plans for establishing a series of platoon size blocking positions west and south of LZ Liz along the foot hills, south of the ARVN positions, request plans by 1700hrs 8 October 1970. At 1436hrs Brigade reemphasize Rules of Engagement to all elements notify this station when it has been completed. Must be no later then 1630hrs today. At 1530hrs S-5 at BS724538, a total of 1900 Piasters were spend on 1 M-26 hand frag grenade, 1 106mm rocket, 1 claymore, 1 155 HE round and 1 81 HE round and 1 81 WP round. Also 1 M-72 Law, and 175 M-79 rounds where purchased from 7 Vietnamese children 11 to 14 all blown in place, except M-79 rounds which were brought to LZ Liz. At 1914hrs TMF S-72B sighted stationary target with metal confirmation and engaged with 16 VT rounds 105 rounds. At 2310hrs TMF S-67C sighted stationary target with negative metal confirmation and engaged at 2300hrs with 6 VT rounds 105 Artillery. Legend: 1st Platoon 54-59, 2nd Platoon 84-89, 3rd Platoon 34-39, 4th Platoon 04-09 and CO 12.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. SP4 Shephen Schwarts was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (Sick).

 

Alpha Company
October 7, 1970

At 1730hrs Alpha Company 34 element at BS745554 found 1 green uniform, NVA also one plastic poncho liner, intravenous tube. Alpha Company at 24 and 54 elements is located at BS739564, has 37 females, 2 males, and 50 children. Detained out of 90 people, only 4 had ID’s and the ages on these are wrong, cannot talk to them, as we do not have a interpreter will hold until they get one, detainees later released. At 1830hrs Alpha Company 84 element while closing on Day Logger at 12’s location spotted 3 personnel at BS758554. The personnel evaded and were engaged. The personnel had pack, 2 confirmed KIA. I had an OD green uniform, the other a white shirt and back pants, enemy were evading 300 meters to the southwest, packs contained medical supplies, clothes, hammocks and a lot of documents will sweep the area again in the morning.

 

Bravo Company
October 7, 1970

Bravo Company took part in Surge Operation 1st PZ 0910hrs and last LZ 0926hrs, 54-BS735615, 84-BS727613 and 34-BS734622. At 0930hrs Bravo Company 12 element at BS737622 detained female 25, no ID, sent to Village Screening Committee. At 1000hrs Bravo 12 has 2 detainees at BS737622, 1 male 51, ID, 1 female 31 ID and Chief says one has bad ID and other possible VC. At 1025hrs Bravo Company 12 engaged 1 VC at BS735622, 20 meters away 1 VC KIA, Blue uniform had citation for Valor, had a weapon looking for it now negative results. At 1225hrs Bravo Company 34 element request Urgent Dust Off for 2 US possible 3 as results of booby trap. A 60mm round with trip wire on a trial, results 1 KIA Marada, 2 WIA Reed with wounds to right arm, and face, Noel wounds to arm, head neck and legs, Dust Off completed at 1240hrs. At 1330hrs Bravo Company at BS727613 received 20 to 40 rounds of sniper fire from 2 to 3, weapons from their northwest, sweeping the area at this time, had negative results, fired artillery with negative results. At 2000hrs Bravo Company 34 element Urgent Dust Off for 1 US who went into convulsions, and received a small frag wound around the temple region earlier due to Booby trap accident Philips, Michael completed at 2020hrs. Bravo Company reports that SP4 Lorenzo D. Noiel to 91 Evac with frag wounds to face and neck, PFC Tommy E. Vaughn with 2nd degree burns both hands and both cafes. (see October 6 1970) and PVT Gary R. Reid where evac to 91st Evac Hospital with frag wound to right forearm, PFC Michael W. Phillips treated and released Battalion Aid with small frag wound, PFC Frederick A. Young treated and released from Battalion Aid with frag wound to left wrist and PVT CRAIG MARATTA WAS LISTED AS KIA multiple frag wounds to chest abdomen and lower extremities.

 

Charlie Company
October 7, 1970

Charlie Company is taking part in Surge Operation 1st PZ 0718hrs Last LZ time 0751hrs, the locations of LZ BS682594, BS680580 and BS690590. At 0808hrs Charlie Company 34 element found 1 booby trap on their LZ pressure type device, BS690590, 1 salmon can with Petna, mouse trap used to set it off was exposed due to the rain destroyed it in place. At 0810hrs Charlie Company 84 element found 4 positions 3 X 5 2days old in a circular formation unused at BS685585 also found a tunnel filled with water and could not tell how large the tunnel was. At 0930hrs Charlie Company 12 element will send to Village screening committee. At 0940hrs Charlie Company 12 element found 400 pounds of rice buried at BS690590, at their LZ, top layer ruined by water bottom was in good shape. At 1100hrs the 34 element at BS690580 found 1 booby trap 105 round trip wire, blown in place. 1-20 Infantry reports Charlie Company 12 picked up 1 female with documents, medical supplies, 20-21, no ID, and sent to Military Intelligence. At 1205hrs Charlie Company at BS684586 found 1 booby trap inside a hootch, was in a box underground, so that if you stepped in a box it would detonate a frag, with a pressure type device, it was destroyed in place. At 1215hrs Charlie Company at BS680580, found 1 bunker buried under brush 4 X 6 with a small tunnel leading off it, tunnel was caved in, tracks on ground. Lead the people to believe it was used this morning, found another bunker at the same place with fresh tracks, both bunkers were destroyed in place. At 0905hrs Charlie Company 34, 04 and 12 in location at BS689583. At 1930hrs Charlie Company the 54 element Night Defense Position at BS683596, and 84 Night Defense Position at BS683596.

 

Delta Company
October 7, 1970

At 0645hrs Delta Company 84, 12 and 04 in Day Logger at BS758556, an 86 closed on BS723639 and the 38 element closed on BS712584. Delta Company takes part in another Combat Assault a Surge Operation at 0941hrs to 1036hrs As Charlie Company in Combat Assault into Surge Operation, Delta Company is the back haul to LZ Liz and takes over the Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
October 7, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Dragon, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0130hrs Recon Platoon in location at BS720490. At 0842hrs Recon Platoon conducts a Combat Assault to BS699566. At 1141hrs Recon is back haul to Liz and returned to their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry.
