March 7, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0400hrs RF712 at BS745650, on patrol engaged 3 VC, 2 male and 1 female, results, 1 VC KIA, 1 AK-47 CIA with negative casualties. At 0400hrs RF Headquarters 1-16 group, vicinity BS736644, mine seep team found a heavy mine in road, unknown type blew it in place. At 0400hrs RF 468 vicinity BS690524, had 1 RF detonate a mine resulting in 1 RF WIA. At 0400hrs RF937 vicinity BS737573 while on Patrol received 2 to 3 rounds of small arms fire with results 1 RF WIA. At 0405hrs MACV/PF160 vicinity BS697610 engaged an unknown size VC element resulting in 5 VC KIA, not US confirmed. At 0910hrs LZ Dragon cleared A Calvary Box # 33A and Night Hawk # 43 below the 50 east – west grid line with negative clearance above 50 (east – west) grid line clear this location AEP III. At 1145hrs RF 143 vicinity BS740673 engaged 8 VC of an unknown unit resulting in 2 RF WIA, 2 VC KIA, 1 VC female WIA/CIA along with 1 Chi Com grenade and 1 carbine and some documents CIA. At 2015hrs 4-4 ARVN element observed an unknown size NVA element at BS615557, ARVN engaged with small arms fire and artillery, also requested gun ships. Received negative return fire until artillery was lifted and at that time the enemy returned fire with small arms, contact broken at 2125hrs. Continue engaging with small arms fire and RF 60mm mortar. At 2140hrs 4-4 ARVN vicinity BS612557 in contact separated into separate forces, the point element (containing ARVN Med-evac) was ambushed while moving south have had sporadic contact since 2125hrs Warlord 33 and Saber 44 in the immediate vicinity have not expended. At the time have 3 ARVN WIA, 2 Urgent and 1 priority and Dust Off was completed at 2205hrs. At 2235hrs TMF at 2205hrs Sting 310 C has 3 stationary targets with negative metal confirmed, and engaged at 2215hrs expended with 8 HE Artillery 155. Legend: 1st Platoon 53, 2nd Platoon 98, 3rd Platoon 26, 4th Platoon 22, CO-66.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
March 7, 1971

At 0945hrs Alpha Company set up their Patrol Bases and started patrolling their Area of Operation Command Post, 3rd and 4th Platoon Patrol Base at BS701521, 3rd Platoon patrol BS705522, BS707518, BS708516 then at 1400hrs move to Command Post Patrol Base at BS705519. 3rd Platoon patrol BS705517, BS705515, BS706514, 1st and 2nd Platoons Patrol Base at BS680507, 1st and 2nd Patrol BS682506, BS682498, BS680488, and BS683485. At 1030hrs Alpha Company paid 10 Vietnamese children (10-12) 8 cans of C-Rations for Artillery 155mm round and 1 Artillery Duster round. At 1605hrs Alpha Company 1st and 2nd Patrol vicinity BS681504 found a trench running down a mountain for approximately 100 meters to a rice paddy. Rice paddy approximately 400’ by 50’, there were many fresh tracks around the area, and a trail with heavy use in the last couple of days. At 1940hrs Alpha Company Command Post 3rd and 4th Platoons BS706519, 1st and 2nd Platoons BS679540, 1st Platoon ambush BS680503, 2nd Platoon ambush BS683507, and 3rd Platoon ambush BS708517.

 

Bravo Company
March 7, 1971

Bravo Company continued to set up Patrol Bases and use multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0425hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon patrol is moving to BS749446. At 0710hrs Bravo Company Command Post, 3rd and 4th Platoon is Patrol Base at BS729443 with 1st and 3rd Platoons at BS742425. At 1830hrs Bravo Company all patrols have closed. At 2010hrs Bravo Company Command Post 2nd and 4th Platoon 736449, 1st and 3rd Platoon BS735435, 3rd Platoon with ambush at BS733436.

 

Charlie Company
March 7, 1971

Charlie Company used multiple Patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0825hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon patrol is moving out for BS702542. At 0945hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon is moving to BS669559. At 1000hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon Patrol checkpoints BS669559, BS654557, BS648557, BS651563, BS648572 and BS666578. At 1405hrs 2nd Platoon vicinity BS659558 3 51Cal positions freshly dug approximately 2 week old, 2 man fighting positions, with 2 tunnels and behind 51 Caliber Position were fighting position 4’ long. Tunnels were approximately 20’ long and had a opening approximately 4’ in diameter and approximately 3’ to 4’ underground. At 1540hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS661552 found a ammo bag full of bullet holes and covered with blood., also a few sets of footprints around the bag. At BS656557 they found a tire track 2 ½ to 3" wide and 15" long. Also in the area were a lot of propaganda leaflets stating "get out of Vietnam now and stop killing the Vietnamese. At 1600hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS654556 on patrol found 1 51caliber position and 8 to 12 sleeping positions in a circle around the position. Also found 50 to 60’ of commo wire with splices with a hole 4’ in diameter and 4’ deep. At 1835hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS664555 made contact with 5 NVA approximately 300 meters the NVA evaded to the south, artillery was fired with negative results.

 

Delta Company
March 7, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz, with Road Security.

 

Echo Company
March 7, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0601hrs Recon is moving out for LZ Liz and at 0845hrs Recon is closing on LZ Liz.
