Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 7, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. TMF, 0925hrs String 312 Target C, spotted 3 to 4 personnel, which was moving northwest to southeast, and shot at 0934hrs with 8 VT HE Artillery 105mm. At 1400hrs S-4 Dolphin 458 is on station for re supply. At 1600hrs Primo 4 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter at 1645hrs. At 1-20 Infantry Combat Assault and AMC is on station. At 2015hrs Intelligence, Source unknown origin C-45, strength 100, no known heavy weapons, mission to attack OP Wink, D-3 rating, passed from MACV to 1-20 Infantry at 1730hrs and passed to Brigade on 1800hrs January 7, 1971. At 2020hrs 103 RF vicinity BS785473 got 1 VC KIA and 1 VC CIA, also 15 rounds AK-47, and 5 pounds of rice also completely destroyed a sampan while on sweep. Legend: 1st Platoon 71-76, 2nd Platoon 91-96, 3rd Platoon 41-46, 4th Platoon 01-06, CO-08.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
January 7, 1971

At 0715hrs Alpha Company Ambush closed on Patrol Bases 3rd platoon at BS760586, 1st Platoon at BS748560 and 2nd Platoon at BS766543. At 1930hrs Alpha Company Command Post, 4th Platoon OP Frag BS753568, 3rd Platoon BS761570, BS757577, 1st Platoon BS742567, BS741569, BS747570, and 2nd Platoon BS752567, BS758566.

 

Bravo Company
January 7, 1971

At 0655hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon ambush closed at BS728394, 2nd Platoon ambush at BS722407 and 3rd Platoon ambush closed on BS704416. At 1710hrs Bravo Company Combat Assault started at 1905hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 2nd and 4th Platoon at BS68555, 1st and 3rd Platoon in Night Defense Position vicinity BS638558.

 

Charlie Company
January 7, 1971

At 0705hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon closed on OP Wood stock at BS673572, 1st Platoon Patrol closed on OP Pax BS693538, and 3rd Platoon at OP Wink BS699562. At 0922hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS665579 and 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS707557. At 1145hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS667574, request 1 Urgent Dust Off for 2 US with multiple frag wounds to legs Guiles and Spezia completed at 1200hrs. Charlie Company at 1245hrs 2nd Platoon on patrol was searching vicinity BS665576 moving through grass between 2 trails, they detonated a hand frag booby trap rigged with trip wire and smoke grenade fuse, wounding 2 US with frag to legs. Immediately after Dust Off the 2nd Platoon detained a woman in the area, 35, no ID will be sent to MACV. At 1207hrs Charlie Company vicinity of 699562 requested a Urgent Dust Off for 1 RF with gunshot wound to the thigh, self inflicted by .45 cal pistol completed at 1220hrs. At 1340hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon on patrol vicinity 704555 found booby trap, Petna can with trip wire and smoke grenade fuse, beside a trail and well camouflaged destroyed in place. At 700565 3rd Platoon found booby trap 60mm mortar round with pressure release device on a trail, destroyed in place. At 1350hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon on patrol vicinity of 665578 found the body of Vietnamese women approximately 30, and she been dead about 2 weeks, lying in brush and had minor frag wounds from chest down. There were no signs of artillery in the area. Death most likely due to booby trap body was unclothed. At 2030hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon ambush in location vicinity 694545, 3rd Platoon in Night Defense Position vicinity 707558. At 2205hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon vicinity 707558, had trip flare go off, blew claymore and engaged with frag, checked area with negative findings, are moving to new location but will check area in morning, new location 707559. PFC Ralph D. Guiles was attached to 91st Evac Hospital with frag wounds to both legs and SP4 James L. Speziz send to B 23 Medical treated and released with frag wounds to left arm and both legs.

 

Delta Company
January 7, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. PFC Glen V Mayne was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (11B10).

 

Echo Company
January 7, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0852hrs Recon Platoon has closed on LZ Liz.
