Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0755hrs Helix (FAC) 38 we were going to put in an Air Strike at BS781312, but did not. At 0756hrs LZ Liz South OP the 105 spotted a man putting in a min at grid BS749399, we fired the 155 artillery at this location. At 0845hrs The Brigade the Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz and was briefed by the S-3 and he left at 0900hrs. At 1020hrs 1-20 Infantry Battalion Commander departed from LZ Liz to rear and Recon. At 1025hrs Helix (FAC) 36 we are putting in an Air Strike at BS846405. At 1405hrs Helix (FAC) 34 we are putting in Air Strike into BS764404. At 1415hrs LTC Fischer has returned to LZ Liz from the Rear at this time. At 1446hrs Helix (FAC) 34 at grid BS735472 spotted fresh digging in what looks like a tunnel complex or a cave-in from a tunnel.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
January 7, 1970
At 1117hrs Alpha Company Urgent Dust Off Requests: one US hit a 105 round which was booby trap with a pressure type firing device with battery wire, Name PFC Angel M. Cruz Jr. completed at 1125hrs grid BS783516 (At 2025hrs 91st Evac, MFW with extreme damage left leg and extreme tissue damage to right arm and right leg). At 1215hrs Alpha Company we found a total of six booby traps in the vicinity of grid BS783516, five were 105 rounds, pressure type, and 1 hand frag. We also found 2 60mm rounds lot no MA-1-380. All of these rounds were blown in place. We will be sending in the pressure device for 105 rounds. At 1558hrs Alpha Company the 24 element has closed on BS775517. At 1622hrs Alpha Company Combat Assault Pick up Zone and last LZ 1722hrs as Alpha Company moved from BS771517 to BS815455. At 1850hrs Our Night Defense Position is at BS815437 and 24 is at BS810442.
Bravo Company
January 7, 1970
At 0617hrs Bravo Company the 06, 48, and the 25 element have closed on their semi permanent position. At 0715hrs Bravo Company Urgent Dust Off Requested for 1 PF with gunshot wound of the leg, was on automatic and it went off when a few PF were playing around with it, Dust Off completed at 0729hrs at grid BS776446. At 0730hrs Bravo 48 element closed on their semi permanent position and at 0745hrs Bravo 07 element is moving to BS784459. At 0935hrs Bravo Company Urgent Dust Off requested for 1 PF hit a booby trap and has shrapnel in the legs and thigh, he also has a broken leg at grid BS789440, completed at 0944hrs. At 0923hrs Bravo 07 has closed on their semi permanent position. At 1330hrs Bravo Company the 05 element along with the PF had 1 male VC evading at grid BS758450. The PF engaged the VC with small arms fire and 1 KIA resulted, about 25 to 30 years old, he had no weapon and was dressed in blue shirt and red shorts. At 1325hrs Bravo Company the 21 element has reached their objective at grid BS767461 with negative results. At 1335hrs Bravo Company we have a Vietnamese child who wants to sell an anti personnel mine at our location of BS783433, we request S-5 to handle the situation. At 1544hrs Bravo Company all elements have closed on their semi permanent location the 46 element picked up 1 male Vietnamese detainee with no ID and about 17 to 20 years old. At 2135hrs Bravo Company 09 element while moving to their snake location spotted 1 NVA in front of them on a rice paddy dike. The 09 element told him to come here but the Vietnamese started to evade, we engaged with small arms fire, which resulted in 1 NVA KIA male. He had 1 38 Cal Pistol with a Star on the handle (SN 11022314-66-1964), NVA brown belt and was wearing a pack and had on a green uniform at grid BS785450. At 2218hrs Bravo Company Gorilla element is moving to BS790435 and the rangers are moving to BS791440.
Charlie Company
January 7, 1970
At 0728hrs Charlie Company the 44 element will not work today. At 0822hrs Charlie Company is moving out. At 0845hrs Charlie Company at grid BS797367 we found a large tunnel. There is a trench about 8 meters long, which leads into large tunnel of unknown size. At 1050hrs Charlie Company reports a PF hit a booby trap hand frag at BS757534, he was dusted off (priority); Dragon channels with frag wounds of the rectum. At 1100hrs Charlie Company we found the tunnel was 60 meters in length and was deep in the ground. Footprints, two to three days old, were found in the tunnel. Parts of the tunnel was picked though solid rock. We will draw a diagram of the tunnel and then blew it. We also found two other tunnels of unknown size. At 1206hrs the tunnels of is 115 meters long and still searching, we request assistance from the engineers. At 1320hrs Charlie Company we went in the same tunnel at grid BS797367 and followed it an additional 10 meters and found a cave in. We request 6 (15 pounds shaped charges) to blow the tunnel. We also are checking out a third tunnel at grid 797367. It is about 80 meters long with a slot of twist and turns. We are waiting for the engineers at this time. At 1500hrs Charlie Company in the vicinity BS757534, we found another booby trap, pressure type, of unknown size, this booby trap was found 50 meters south of BS757534 and was blown in place (Possible a 105 round).
Delta Company

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1015hrs Delta Company all snakes have closed on LZ Liz. At 1838hrs Delta Company reports their night locations 07 SRRP is at checkpoint 1 at BS747436, 06 snake is at BS762438, 64 snake at BS766436 and 26 snake is at BS766436. At 2315hrs Delta Company reports the 07 element is at BS743436.
Echo Company
January 7, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0610hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fire 17, Observed Mission 1 for a total expended 44 He and 10 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 1335hrs Recon we found part of a base camp and there are 2 hootches burning at grid BS716395. We found a case of old PRC 25 batteries, which may have been used for booby traps. The area is quite dense and we plan to set our Night Defense Position here and operate in the same area tomorrow. At 1617hrs Recon Platoon reports our present location is at BS716397 and at 1740hrs reports it as their Night Defense Position.
