Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0155hrs Saber Black 40 is on station to work vicinity radar sightings BS747382 and BS747378. At 0217hrs Saber 40 vicinity BS735398 sighted 2 boxes 3’ X 6’ engaged and observed 2 muzzle flashes, 20 to 60 meters from the target next to a stream. He engaged the area of flashes with negative findings and broke station at 0230hrs. At 0331hrs Saber 40 is on station and working Box 69 and broke station at 0350hrs. At 0552hrs ARVN PSDF vicinity BS764473 received approximately 5 60mm mortar rounds resulting in 2 ARVN KIA and 5 PSDF WIA. They reported negative ground contact at any time. At 0630hrs Gun Ships scrambled for BS771461 (Bridge) which also received incoming mortar rounds. Update 0815hrs Bunkers destroyed on the north side of the bridge. East and west side, of bridge (total 2). It looks like satchel charges were used and not mortars with the Results 3 PF KIA, 6 PF WIA and 1 VC KIA, 4 grenades CIA and bridge is still operational at this time. At 0550hrs MACV Mo Duc vicinity BS764473, requests Urgent Dust Off for 5 PSDF injured when they took incoming mortars (82mm), completed at 0620hrs. At 0540hrs PF 253 unknown size enemy force fired 6 rounds of 82 Mortar rounds into Duc My village. Simultaneous with the mortar attack and estimated sapper squad wearing brown sapper briefs attacked the North Bridge (BS771461). The Sappers completely destroyed 2 bunkers, but did not damage the bridge. Results of the mortar attack 1 RF KIA 103rd RF Battalion, 5 PSDF WIA where taken to 23rd Medical. Results of sapper attack 3 PF KIA PF 253, 6 PF WIA PF 253, Enemy 1 Enemy sapper KIA, 2 bunker torpedoes and 4 Chi Com CIA and blown in place. At 0850hrs MACV vicinity BS748643 request Urgent Dust Off for 1 RF who hit booby trap, has frag wounds to the neck, Booby trap unknown type, 1 RF WIA, 1 KIA from RF 712 completed at 0905hrs. At 1010hrs Chinook is on station at this time. At 1025hrs MACV Mo Duc vicinity BS697571, priority Dust Off for 1 RF who hit booby trap, wounds to hands and feet completed at 1035hrs. At 1045hrs Chinook is breaking station. At 1325hrs S-4 Hornet 638 is on station for re supply. At 1445hrs MACV MO Duc, Update on Dust Off RF 468 received 2 to 3 rounds sniper fire from a tree line 300 meters to the east. Continuing their move 1 RF detonated a booby trap, it was a small can of Petna with pressure release device. After Dust Off was completed RF 468 received another 2 to 3 sniper rounds. At 1530hrs Primo is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. Legend: 1st Platoon 54-59, 2nd Platoon 64-99, 3rd Platoon 04-09, 4th Platoon 34-39, CO-21.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. SP4 Elmo Tryler (05C20) was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Alpha Company
February 7, 1971

At 0755hrs Alpha Company Command Post 3rd and 4th Platoons moving to BS737429. At 0835hrs Alpha Company vicinity BS729428 requested Priority Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese hit booby trap change to Urgent Dust Off at 0910hrs Booby trap was a Artillery 105 round with a trip wire device, set up along a trail. Estimate that it was a (smoke grenade) firing device used to set it off, Dust Off completed at 0916hrs. At 1045hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon patrol closed on BS705421 with Command Post with 3rd and 4th Platoons in Patrol Base at BS737429. At 1400hrs Alpha Company vicinity BS737430 while searching area 3rd Platoon found a small cache buried in a hole along side a hedgerow. Contains 2 cigarette lighters with marking 504 & 555, 2 khaki shirts, and 2 khaki pants, 2 wrist watches Tanco & Simco, l bottle US germicide. Also 1 rain jacket with sipper and sack, l hard drawn map, 1 electrical firing device, 2 locks, 1 pair sandals, 1 blood stained paper with US names, 1 NVA mess cup, 1 tube antiseptic, 2 spools of trip wire for booby traps, 1 PRC 25 battery and wire rigged for attachments to booby trap. At 1815hrs Charlie Company reports that Alpha 1st Platoon vicinity BS709565 moving to ambush location spotted 2 VC moving east at a distance of 150 meters. They engaged with small arms fire and the VC evaded east, 1st Platoon moved to the contact area with negative results and continued toward their ambush location at 1910hrs. Alpha Company reports night locations Command Post with 4th Platoon at BS721429, 2nd Platoon in location vicinity BS705421, 3rd Platoon BS714436 and Alpha Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving to BS713428.

 

Bravo Company
February 7, 1971

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and road security.

 

Charlie Company
February 7, 1971

At 0730hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon closed vicinity BS699562. At 0801hrs 3rd Platoon vicinity BS704555, while moving into ambush location, found 2 booby traps. One was a 155 round with smoke grenade fuse and a trip wire, 1 was of unknown type with trip wire device will destroy, both were located on a trail and destroyed in place. At 1815hrs Charlie Company 84 vicinity BS709565 moving to ambush location the 1st Platoon spotted 2 VC moving east at a distance of 150 meters, they engaged with small arms fire and VC evaded east. The 1st Platoon moved to be contact area with negative results and continued toward their ambush location. At 1930hrs Charlie Company 54 element at BS712565 is moving and received 15-20 rounds of small arms fire from wood line 250 meters to the north, they returned fire and broke contact. They are moving to new ambush location. At 2008hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon is in location at BS705549, 54 closed on location at BS715558.

 

Delta Company
February 7, 1971

Delta Company is location on LZ Liz and has taken over the Security Mission for LZ Liz and Road Security.

 

Echo Company
February 7, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0940hrs Recon closed vicinity BS674589. At 1837hrs Recon Platoon has closed on their Night Defense Position at BS682592.
