Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0515hrs 1-20 Infantry Radar Targets at 2200hrs 6 to 10 stationary personnel at BS731569 and engaged with 16 HE of 4.2 Mortar and at 0110hrs 6 to 8 stationary personnel were sighted at BS826431 and engaged with 12 HE of Artillery 155mm. At 0907hrs Brigade to 1-20 Infantry TOC requests for Area of Operation extension # B-20 was approve by Brigade. At 0925hrs TMF string 71A had 3 personnel moving south to north at 4 miles per hour at 0915hrs we had no confirmation of heat or metal. We requested a Visual Recon Team at 0930hrs and it was denied due to a commitment to string 153 and Beacon Visual Recon. At 1920hrs 1-20 Infantry we request 2 Platoons of E Troop, 1-1 Calvary be OPCON to the 1-20 Infantry for 5 days beginning 071300hrs May 1970. The purpose is to search and clear, we also requested 2 flame tracks for 1-1 Calvary from Chu Lai to work the Gaza Strip for 5 days. CPT Robinson turned down the request. At 1950hrs Charlie Company informed that 3-5 stationary were sighted by Radar at BS834429. At 2250hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC the Battalion Commander talked to Brigade S-3 reference the Secret Message of increased activity Brigade S-3 stated that no implementing instructions would be issued reference the Secret Message. Brigade S-3 stated those 1-20 Infantry Operations would be carried out as planned on 7 May 1970 and were satisfactory. No change in planned operations was necessary. The purpose of the call by the Battalion Commander was to discuss predisposition of 1-20 Infantry element in response to subject message.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 6, 1970

Alpha Company using multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation and at 1730hrs will move into to their Night Defense Position at BS735450.

 

Bravo Company
May 6, 1970

Bravo Company was using multiple patrolling in their Area of Operations today. At 0855hrs Bravo Company the 35 and 26 elements are on road security. At 1340hrs Bravo Company a Vietnamese child brought one M 16E3 bouncing Betty Mine. It was on the Red Ball at BS778444 about at BS778444, about 300 meters south of the access road. The mine was armed and ready to blow. The mine is now at the Twin Ville and will be picked up by S2 and S5. At 1540hrs a Vietnamese female reports that there is a part of a body in the vicinity of Van Truong. The 74 element is moving out to check the area. The 74 element requests a body bag for the left leg of a US (CPT LISOWSKI). At 1745hrs Bravo Company the 55 element is at BS767450 where they engaged one VC with a weapon. It was an unknown type of weapon and the clothing was unidentifiable because they were 100 meters away, he evaded to the west into a tree line. The 56 element checked out the area with negative finding. At 1835hrs Bravo Company request an urgent Dust Off for one US with frag wound to the shoulder resulting from a hand frag thrown by a VC from approximately 10 feet. The 56 element engaged the VC resulting in one VC KIA, one M2 Carbine CIA and 2 M 26 grenades CIA. The VC dressed in black pants and green shirt. At 1900hrs Bravo Company 79 element spotted 2 VC at approximately 300 meters to their front (north) with a weapon and 81mm was called in on the area, it is unknown what type of weapon it was or the type of clothing which was worn. They evaded to the east, the area of BS798442 was checked out with negative finding. At 1914hrs Bravo Company we request a priority Dust Off for one VC civilian who was shot in the back by a carbine. He was carried back BS771461 and could possible be a VC, Complete at 1925hrs. At 1940hrs Bravo Company the 56 element VC KIA also had a NVA flag, a US poncho liner, AK47 magazine (empty) a US pistol belt, two electrical blasting caps, 2 books (one was a plan to make a booby trap). One homemade booby trap (frag type), an ID with the name Pham Van Dam (VC Type), issued by Trong Tan, and he had one letter addressed to a person in Saigon asking for money (Name: Trang). SGT Melvin B. Welch was evac to 91st Evac Hospital frag wound left shoulder.

 

Charlie Company
May 6, 1970

At 1445hrs Charlie Company Day Logger to link up to the 45 element for re-supply and at 1634hrs reports our location at BS819401. At 1811hrs Charlie Company we are moving to the Night Defense Position at BS824408 and closed at 1922hrs. At 1950hrs Charlie Company informed that 3-5 stationary were sighted by Radar at BS834429.

 

Delta Company
May 6, 1970

Delta Company will continue their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1935hrs Delta Company the 56, 36 and 76 elements are in location on the access road and the 57 SRRP is at 764411.

 

Echo Company
May 6, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz.
