Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 6, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0932hrs Helix 34 is on station and sent to Charlie Company. At MACV Dust Off priority for 1 Vietnamese4 female, pregnant bleeding from the vaginal area, at BS563325 completed at 1120hrs. At 1235hrs S-4 Re supply bird broke station. At 1335hrs S-4 Dolphin 639 is on station for re supply. Legend:1st Platoon 71-76, 2nd Platoon 91-96, 3rd Platoon 41-46, 4th Platoon 01-06, CO-08.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. PFC Kevin Wilson was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital medic (Check Alpha Company January 6, 1971).

 

Alpha Company
January 6, 1971

At 0915hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS766581 has detainee 4 females and 1 male and all will be sent to Mo Duc. At 0945hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon is moving out for BS746553 and 3rd Platoon is moving out fro BS766578. At 1100hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 2 vicinity grid BS747551 and 3rd Platoon patrol at checkpoint 2 vicinity BS770576. At 1240hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon searching the area of Mechanical Ambush detonation found some notes and 2 personnel letters, notes include 1 Vietnamese Propaganda leaflet will back hauled to Liz. At 1535hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS762582, requests Priority Dust Off for 2 US with multiple frag wounds to legs and back, from booby trap, PFC Joseph Harper and MEDIC Wilson, completed at 1543hrs. At 1627hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon patrol detonated a booby trap about 4’ off trail they believe it was a pressure release device. The crater was 18" in diameter and had a white substance in it. At 1705hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon vicinity 743557, Urgent Dust Off for 1 US with gunshot wound to elbow, completed at 1631hrs. WRAP UP while attempting to clear his weapon PFC Estrada noticed that his bolt was not extracting the chambered round. Upon seeing this he removed the magazine, removed the safety and discharged the weapon in an effort to clear it. Simultaneous with the discharge, PFC Guzzardo moved his arm in front of the weapon individuals and eyewitness will be back hauled to the rear tomorrow for further questioning and completion of statements. Results 1 US injured to elbow. At 1925hrs Alpha Company Mechanical Ambush BS766582, BS768579, Command Post 3rd and 4th Platoons BS753568, BS766579, BS761587, 1st Platoon BS746553, BS746565,BS747556, 2nd Platoon BS755555, BS762556. At 2030hrs Alpha Company vicinity BS746553 1st Platoon in night position took 2 M-79 rounds from the northeast at a distance of 300 meters, they landed on both sides of ambush position and had negative casualties, returned small arms fire. Alpha Company reports the following PFC Richard Guzzardo gunshot wound right arm and PFC Joseph Harper (where evac to the 27 Surgical) also Headquarters and Headquarters Company Medic PFC Kevin M. Wilson Both with Multiply Frag Wounds both legs also 27th Surgical.

 

Bravo Company
January 6, 1971

At 0945hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 2nd and 4th Platoons in their Patrol Base at BS757414. 3rd Platoon Patrol Base is at BS740407. At 1120hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS743557, bought from 2 Vietnamese child for 1 box of C-Rations, 1 dud M-26 hand frag, and l dud Chi Com grenade. At 1215hours Bravo Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS722404 Urgent Dust Off for SP4 Carl Tune, completed at 1226hrs. At 1235hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon vicinity 725407, on patrol spotted 1 VC with pack and weapon, wearing green uniform coming out of a bunker, 150 meters to the east, the VC started to evade to the east and 2nd Platoon engaged. The VC dropped his rucksack and returned fire and results WHA 1 US personnel. They dusted off the wounded personnel and continued to search for the VC. They found the rucksack it contained tobacco, poncho and straw. At 1400hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon patrol is moving out for BS754408, 3rd Platoon is moving to BS707424 and 2nd Platoon is moving to BS714393. At 1850hrs Bravo Company reports locations Command Post and 4th Platoon at BS722407, 3rd Platoon BS718417, BS719418, BS718416, 1st Platoon BS734397, BS733396, BS735398, 2nd Platoon BS722407, BS721406 and BS723418. SP4 Carl Tune was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital gun shot wound to left hip.

 

Charlie Company
January 6, 1971

At 0750hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon closed vicinity BS699563, 1st Platoon ambush closed vicinity BS693538. At 0900hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon patrol is moving out for BS668538 and 2nd Platoon closed on BS679572. At 1920hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS673572 at OP Wood stock observed 3 mortar rounds impact approximately 600 meters southeast of their position. They estimated the mortar tube location at Box BS665579-BS670580-BS664577-BS671576. Artillery was fired into the area craters will be checked out tomorrow morning. At 1930hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon at BS681531, 3rd Platoon at BS704554, 1st Platoon BS681531, and 2nd Platoon at BS673574. SGT Wayne R. Prunier was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Delta Company
January 6, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. Delta Company requested Dust Off for 1 person extremely intoxicated. Had been reported drinking all day. Intermittently is violent and now unconscious. James Heathcoat Dust Off is completed at 1805hrs.

 

Echo Company
January 6, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1147hrs Recon Platoon in Patrol Base vicinity BS731438. At 1340hrs Recon Platoon vicinity at BS731438, detained 2 Vietnamese 1 male age 15 had some NVA money, female age 25 to 30 known VC sympathizers Mrs. Chau, they will be taken to Duc Pho. At 1540hrs Recon Platoon reports their Night Location vicinity BS728446.
