Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 6, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 1110hrs (MACV Mo Duc) M 26 at grid BS715566 we found 1 hat, 1 NVA flag, 2 booby traps and some bunkers and tunnels. M 72 element found 1 pressure device booby trap buried under the ground and the M 73 element found 1 booby trap, trip wire device leading away from the explosives and across a trail. Negative knowledge of the size or type of explosives as it was blown in Place. Also M 72 is working west of the Ville and has picked up 1 female detainee, 51 years old and wearing blue and black and has an ID. We found 2 books, tobacco paper she gives to the VC, newspaper of Ho Chi Minh death and propaganda papers of VC killing GI’s Name was Nguyen Thi Lai. At 1750hrs 26 Engineer a total of 64 hours were worked clearing 70 acres in the area BS699583 to BS698584 to BS701583 and 2nd area BS696578 to BS693580 to BS695584 to BS697582. We destroyed 14 bunkers, 250 meters of trench, documents at BS695580, a small amount of medical supplies and some small empty jars. All the equipment is operational see Aug 5, 1970. At 1835hrs Brigade an Area of Operation extension is requested by E Troop in the area BS775450 to BS840400 toBS825340 to BS800326 to BS775450 in the Date/Time/Grid 070700hrs to 071900hrs for the purpose of E Troop and RF and PF Operations, Approved by Major Bassett. At 2000hrs M 26 and MACV Mo Duc received 2 rounds of M-79 fire from the vicinity of BS714565 and checked the area with negative findings after engaging the area. About 1500hrs the civilians saw the VC pick up 2 VC KIA with 2 weapons. The information came through MACV channels. The US fired up the area west of where they were taking M-79 fire and the KIA where in the vicinity of BS713567 on the river bank. There was a total of 4 VC total and the other two took the KIA from the area also 1 of the KIA had a M-79. 1-20 Infantry is taking credit for 2 KIA and the Brigade said it would be up to the Brigade S2 and Colonel Barlow if Brigade would give 1-20 Infantry credit. At 2005hrs 1-20 Infantry the AMC, gun ships and flare ship are on station for Bravo Company Combat Assault with Artillery Prep of 4.2 Platoon 98 HE rounds. 152 round 105 HE Artillery and 4 round of 8" Artillery was used. At 2125hrs all aircraft for the Combat Assault have broken station with the gun ships expending some ammo during the Mission. At 2340hrs TMF String 76 was activated at 2326hrs by an unknown number of personnel with engagement made with 16 HE rounds of 105 Artillery.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
August 6, 1970

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission with Charlie Company 26th Engineer in their land clearing operations. At 1300hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon at BS695520 found 1 medical book and 7 ID cards in ammo can in bunker will evac to Bronco. Alpha Company detainee one female and will turned her over to Military Intelligence and continued their Saturation Patrolling and Day Ambush.

 

Bravo Company
August 6, 1970

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 2025hrs Bravo Company 72 element in a Combat Assault of troops reacting to intelligence from Mo Duc had the 1st PZ at 2015hrs and 1st LZ at 2025hrs at grid BS742466 (hot). One of the helicopters did take small arms fire as they lifted off at BS742466. The 72 element is checking out the area and have negative finding. Bravo Company will have a couple of ambushes in the area of BS738465 with Mo Duc informed.

 

Charlie Company
August 6, 1970

Charlie Company with RF 116, 146, 937 and RF Platoon 147,144, 168 continued their Hamlet Pacification program with security mission for highway 1. At 0630hrs Charlie Company has closed on BS747666 and the 34 element has closed on BS747666. At 1015hrs Charlie Company conducts a Combat Assault PZ at 1005hrs at grid BS794569 and LZ at 1015hrs at BS714565. At 1325hrs Charlie Company we request an Urgent Dust Off for one US who hit a booby trap buried in the ground at BS713565, it is a large explosive. The name is PFC Bruce D. Tiedeman with multiple frag wounds to the legs line #159 (Tram Amp Left foot multiple frag wounds both hands) evac to 27 Surgical Hospital completed at 1350hrs. At 1630hrs Late Report on the Combat Assault 72 element picked up 2 males age 30-40, who were turned over to MACV Mo Duc.

 

Delta Company
August 6, 1970

At 0635hrs Delta Company reports their locations the 34 element is at BS743564, the 35 element is at BS758562 and the 36 element is at 752567. With the 52 element is at BS753578, the 54 element is at BS753573, the 56 element is at BS751578, the 54 element is at BS753573 and the 56 element is at BS751584 with 70, 42 elements at BS763567. Also they reports the 74 element is at BS751555, the 75 element is at BS754547 and the 72 element is at BS765558. At 0825hrs Delta Company 26 element Day Ambush had a Vietnamese male direct them to a small tunnel, 4’ wide and 10’ long with a trap door. It was located on the outside of a hamlet along a hedgerow at grid BS752567, it was blown in place. At 1830hr Delta Company we requests a routine Dust Off for 1 US with a high fever, chills, and stomach cramps line #18F completed 1850hrs at grid BS753567. Delta Company is using multiple Day and Night ambushes in their area of operations. At 2005hrs Delta Company their multiply ambushes are all in location.

 

Echo Company
August 6, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0525hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 2 for a total expend of 12 HE rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 2010hrs Recon Platoon reports the 52 element is at BS782391, the 53 is at BS789383 and the 54 element is at BS802363.
