Headquarters and Headquarter Company
April 6, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0420hrs 1-20 Infantry at 2010hrs sighted 4 to 5 personnel moving north at BS725425 with negative clearance and at 2030hrs 4 to 5 stationary personnel were sighted at BS811444 and engaged with 6 HE of Artillery 105mm. At 2050hrs 10 to 15 personnel were sighted moving west and engaged with Nighthawk with negative findings. At 2150hrs 4 to 5 stationary personnel were sighted at BS798469 and negative clearance was given by MACV and at 2210hrs 3 to 5 stationary personnel were sighted at BS824422 and engaged with Nighthawk with negative findings. At 2225hrs 6 to 8 stationary personnel were sighted at BS730466 and Charlie Company was informed and at 0049hrs 6 to 10 stationary personnel were sighted at BS734481 and engaged with 24 HE and 4 firecracker rounds of Artillery 155mm. At 0402hrs 10 to 15 personnel were sighted moving south at BS797454 and engaged with 8 firecrackers rounds of Artillery 105mm. At 0820hrs Battalion Commander left LZ Liz and returned at 0900hrs. At 1405hrs 11 Brigade LRRP the Midnight Cowboy requests 1 round of WP round up 200 at BS783442, direction 2800 at approximate 500 meters. They believe they are 200 meters west of our Area of Operation. At 1415hrs 11 Brigade Warlord has 2 possible KIA at BS824407, 1 in blue and other in khaki. Recon Platoon Conducts a Combat Assault 1st PZ from BS818413 at 1426hrs and 1st LZ at BS824406 at 1429hrs, and last 3rd LZ at 1504hrs. LT Water bury took shrapnel wounds of the hand. At 0450hrs Helix 38 is putting in an Air Strike on BS750346 with 100% explosions and D-1 on target. At 1525hrs Midnight Cowboy found an old enemy bunker at 981444. They found some NVA boots, AK47 ammo cans, some web gear and cans. All were approximately 4 to 6 months old. We have 1 ARVN who is sick and requiring extraction. Fairway 68 heard the transmission of 62.00. At 1620hrs 11 Brigade LRRP Midnight Cowboy found a very large bunker and tunnel complex in a large base camp. It consisted of approximately 30 bunkers re enforced with 6 X 8 beams. They have 3 layers of covering and top are level with the ground. 5 tables were built of logs, a kitchen with a smoke tunnel leading approximately 200 meters from the camp, eating equipment, rucksacks, water supply approximately 10 meters from the perimeter and a large tunnel complex leading under the bunkers were found. Several OP were set up with no signs of recent observations. We destroyed approximately 1/3 of the bunkers. The Base camp was located on a trail. At 1755hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC we will have 1 helicopter from 0700hrs to 1800hrs.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
April 6, 1970

At 0655hrs Alpha Company 01 element has spotted two VC evading at BS775355. We engaged one female and one male resulting in one female KIA and male WIA. Captured 1 M-16, one M-1 Carbine, one US flashlight, 2 frag grenade and one ammo pouch, Serial number of M-16 is 1298153. The VC was dressed in a green shirt and shorts and female had on green pants and black shirt with bush hat. At 0658hrs we request an urgent Dust Off for one Vietnamese male with gun shot wounds to the arm and rectum, completed at 0715hrs. Alpha Company 01 element has checked out the area of contact and found a blood trail leading out of the area requested a tracker team. At 1005hrs Alpha Company the 41element pickup up 2 detainees at BS780395, one female (age 16) and was dressed in red shirt and black pants with one male age 17, dressed in a black and green shirt with a straw hot, both ID which look false. The detainees will be interrogated at the CP. At 1125hrs Alpha Company closed on BS757374 and the 2 detainees were released. At 1705hrs we are at Night Defense Position BS772372. Moving to our snake location Alpha Company pick-up 1 detainees which was turn over to Military Intelligence and received some sniper fire with negative casualties or finding.

 

Bravo Company
April 6, 1970

At 1125hrs Bravo Company the 147 RF Company with the 62 element which was pulling security for bamboo cutting had a RF give his weapon to his wife to hold as RF was cutting bamboo a VC came up, took the weapon from the lady and killed her. The VC evaded and the 62 element is checking the area for VC at this time. Later reports said there was 4 VC in the incident and a young boy killed the woman and stole the M-16. At 1621hrs Bravo Company the 06 element with the PF had a civilian who has when questioned said he was a VC, we are checking out the area of BS787442. At 1640hrs Bravo Company 06 took fire from BS786439 will engaged called in Artillery on the area. At 1730hrs Bravo Company the 45 element at Ville at BS785470 and were told by some civilians that 10 VC evaded from the Ville, in 10 different directions prior to the arrival of the 45 element. The PF policed up 4 Vietnamese females, ages 25 to 35 dressed in black and one male approximately 12 dressed in white shirt and black pants, all had ID and will be held for questioning at North Bridge. At 1745hrs Bravo Company 65 element just had a Chiu Hoi walk into their perimeter at grid BS787424 were he was evac to Military Intelligence. The 65 element has moved out to BS808440 to check out intelligence from Chiu Hoi that there is an AK47 at this gird. One AK 47 was found at that location. At 2000hrs Bravo Company reports that SP4 Steven J. Hood, jeep driver, suffered an accident gunshot wound from his M-16. When he placed his weapon beside his vehicle and it discharged and he was taken to 23rd Med and went to 91st evac in Chu Lai, he had just completed washing his jeep when the accident occurred. SP4 Stephen J. Hood was treated at 91 Evac for left thigh gunshot wound misc.

 

Charlie Company
April 6, 1970

At 0650hrs Charlie Company the 61 element is moving to check the area of Artillery fire last night. All snakes have closed at 0734hrs on BS738455. At 0834hrs the 45 element found 4 more baskets of rice. 0845hrs Charlie Company 65 element will be pulling a day ambush at BS726435 and Company is setting up a Day Logger at BS738455. At 1310hrs we have one male detainee, 30 years old, who is suspected ricer buyer. He appears to be a middleman and has intelligence on VC times and routes. He was dressed in Red top and black bottom and has an ID at grid BS735455 and he will be extracted to Military Intelligence. At 1740hrs Charlie Company we are moving to our Night Defense Position and the 64 element is at BS721437 and the 65 element is at BS724464. At 1930hrs we are now in our Night Defense Position at BS731447.

 

Delta Company
April 6, 1970

At 0720hrs Delta Company the 04 element has closed on LZ Liz. At 0950hrs All Delta Company elements have closed on LZ Liz. Delta Company has taken the Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1943hrs the 43 element is roving from BS770438 to BS776439 with the 42 element is at BS771411.

 

Echo Company
April 6, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fires 7, Observed Mission 6 and Defense Targets 2 for a total expended of 62 HE, 2 WP and 43 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0812hrs Recon Platoon reports the 64 element is moving out to BS812422. At 0900hrs Recon Platoon the 61, 62 and 64 elements have linked up and moving to Day Logger at BS818413. At 1000hrs Recon Platoon we are in our Day Logger at BS818413. At 1415hrs 11 Brigade Warlord has 2 possible KIA at BS824407, 1 in blue and other in khaki. Recon Platoon Conducts a Combat Assault 1st PZ from BS818413 at 1426hrs and 1st LZ at BS824406 at 1429hrs, and last 3rd LZ at 1504hrs. LT Waterbury took shrapnel wounds of the left hand. At 1600hrs Recon Platoon we found a bunker at BS829399 with no signs of recent activity. At 1637hrs Recon at BS822407 we found sleeping positions, hammocks, ammo boxed, NVA uniform, 1 bush hat, the sleeping positions were destroyed. At 1750hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS823409. Lt Waterbury treated at B 23 Medical.
