Headquarters and Headquarter Company
June 5, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0432hrs TMF GS-4 E has a stationary target with no metal confirmation and engaged at 0444hrs with 6 HE rounds Artillery 155mm. At 1455hrs 1-20 Infantry Combat Assault of Alpha and Bravo Company. 1st PZ was at 1332hrs and 5th (last) LZ at 1455hrs putting Alpha Company on LZ Liz. At 1500hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 Command and Control Helicopter is on station at this time. At 1605hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 18 the resupply bird broke station. At 2106hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Bravo 3, Charlie 7, Delta 4 for a total of 14 out. At 2135hrs MACV Mo Duc request Urgent Dust Off, for 1 Vietnamese female litter with gunshot wound to stomach, friendly fire. LZ secure, marked with lights, negative contact 24 hours, negative Vietnamese Air Force initials FWM, Bird #88 completed at 2154hrs. At 2252hrs 1-20 Infantry Saber 48 Box 63, negative finding breaking station at 2154hrs. At 2320hrs Alpha Company LT Sprayberry inspected bunkers 1, 2, 16 and 17 all OK, PSGT Blue inspected 4, 5 and 6 all OK. At 2330hrs LZ Liz LT Adams inspected bunkers 1, 2, 16 and 17 all were satisfactory. At 2331hrs MACV Mo Duc H Troop 17 Calvary and PF 168 found 1 booby trap, vicinity BS738604, an 81mm round with trip wire blown in place also picked up 1 female 40 to 50 years old. She was detained because she was evading from the area US confirmed JPG, time of event 1520hrs. At 2332hrs MACV Duc Pho at 0815hrs RF District Mine Sweep Team was ambushed by unknown size VC element, negative friendly casualties, fired 10 HE rounds Artillery 105mm into grid BS876310. At 2333hrs MACV Mo Duc vicinity BS728607, US element H Troop 17 Calvary, found 3 booby traps: 1 Toe popper, unknown caliber, 2. 60mm mortar detonated by track, negative casualties or damage. 3. A 60mm Mortar was detonated by a fire. US confirmed JPG, time of events recorded at 1620hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 34, 2nd Platoon 05, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 78, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
June 5, 1971

Alpha Company element closed on BS723491. 4-21 Infantry reports Command Post Command Post and Recon as of 0930hrs Operation Stand Down: ceased Combat Operations pre Stand –Down Battalion at San Juan Hill and 2 Companies at LZ Bronco. At 0353hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon Rat Patrol is moving out to BS730496. At 0427hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon Rat Patrol is at checkpoint 1 at BS730496. At 0625hrs all elements closed on Night Defense Position. At 1455hrs 1-20 Infantry conducted Combat Assault with Alpha and Bravo Companies 1st PZ 1332hrs and last LZ at 1455hrs. Alpha Company conducts Combat Assault with Bravo Company with Alpha Company on LZ Liz and takes over the Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 2320hrs Alpha Company LT Sprayberry inspected bunkers 1, 2, 16, and 17 all OK, PSGT Blue inspected 4, 5 and 6 all OK. At 2330hrs LZ Liz LT Adams inspected bunkers 1, 2, 16 and 17 all were satisfactory. 4-21 Infantry report Command Post, Bravo, Delta and Echo Company with Recon are at San Juan Hill. Alpha and Charlie Company reports their location at LZ Bronco.

 

Bravo Company
June 5, 1971

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and Access Road Security. At 1332hrs Alpha and Bravo Companies conduct Combat Assault with 1st PZ at 1332hrs and last LZ and at 1445hrs Bravo Company is at BS7024877, BS694464 and BS704477 and started multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1557hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 3rd Platoon in Patrol Base at BS706478 and 1st Platoon and 4th Platoon in Patrol Base at BS702486. At 2014hrs Bravo Company all elements in their Night Defense Position Command Post with 3rd Platoon at BS712477, 1st and 4th Platoons at BS703480 and 2nd Platoon is at BS698469 with 3 Mechanical Ambushes out.

 

Charlie Company
June 5, 1971

Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0240hrs Charlie Company while in Night Defense Position Command Post and 3rd Platoon vicinity BS713411 had a trip flare ignite 150mm to the northwest of Night Defense Position engaged with claymore. At 0256hrs began sweep of area, negative finding, may have been an animal, will check at 1st Light again. At 1150hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol found 1 dud 105mm round vicinity BS727385, was very old with negative marking. At 2050hrs Charlie Company elements in Night Defense Position Command Post and 3rd Platoon BS708402, 1st Platoon at BS708437, 2nd Platoon BS720385, 2nd Platoon ambush at BS721386, 1st Platoon ambush BS707430 with 4 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Delta Company
June 5, 1971

Delta Company continued using Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0700hrs Delta Company 1st and 4th Platoons will use Night Defense Position as their Patrol Base at BS639558. At 0740hrs Delta Company Command Post and 2nd Platoon in their Patrol Base at BS702442 and the 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out to BS697396. At 2027hrs Delta Company all elements in their Night Defense Position Command Post and 2nd Platoon at BS635556, 1st and 4th Platoon at BS638561 and with 3rd Platoon at Nui Vong. SP4 James E. Nelson was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (11C20).

 

Echo Company
June 5, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
