Headquarters and Headquarter Company
September 4, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0440hrs TMF at 0245hrs S-61C, 5 packs were moving east to West at 3 miles per hour with metal confirmation, negative clearance due to proximity friendly, Visual Recon requested, no ships available. At 0513hrs Radar at 1910hrs at BS707422 sighted 1-5 Stationary personnel engaged with 12 HE rounds105 Artillery. At 2030hrs at BS778404 3 to 5 stationary MACV gave negative clearance due to approximate of a population area and at 2205hrs at BS72164438 sighted 5 to 10 stationary personnel with negative clearance due to proximity Charlie Company. At 1400hrs S-3 requests Area of Operation extension Date/Time/Grid 050600hrs to 082400hrs September 1970, BS5746 to BS5756 to BS6555 to BS6554 South along Nghic-Hanh Mo Duc boundary to BS648460 and was approved. At 1500hrs Helix 32 received clearance for Air Strike on BS729623, BS740614, Mo Duc cleared grid and Brigade notified at 1505hrs that strike is going in. At 1530hrs Battalion Commander Primo 3 in support of Bravo Company sighted several bunkers in a tree line and marked them for Helix 31, attacked by jets at 1605hrs. At BS715613 sighted 6 armed personnel in khaki uniforms, enemy fired at least 2 magazines of AK 47 at Primo who returned fire wounded at least 1 VC, also have 2 bunkers destroyed by hand frag grenades. At 1810hrs TMF Fire Mission at 1755hrs on S76 pick up unknown number, of stationary personnel, metal not detected, negative clearance due to proximity of friendly. Legend: 1st Platoon 63-68, 2nd Platoon 53-58, 3rd Platoon 23-28, 4th Platoon 83-88, CO 09.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry.

 

Alpha Company
September 4, 1970

At 1110hrs Alpha Company the 85 element has an OP at BS705547 received 4 M-79 rounds and about 50 rounds of automatic fire at 2-300 meters from their north. They saw 2 personnel on a berm with weapons, returned fire with M-79 and M 16 negative finding. At BS705548 same area where they received fire, detainee approximately 17 male, wearing all black, sent in on resupply. At 1850hrs Alpha Company Command Post and rest of elements Night Defense Position at BS687559. Alpha Company reports PFC Harold E. Bookman treated and released in the field.

 

Bravo Company
September 4, 1970

At 0913hrs Bravo Company the 63 element made contact with 5 enemy at BS738627 they received about 25 semi-automatic rounds and still receiving fire, the 65 element moving into wood line where snipers fired, with 81mm plotted for BS735614 and BS736612 for use as a blocking fire, 81mm HE rounds on grid BS738627. At 1217hrs Bravo Company 23 element closed on BS740574, 53 element Command Post and 4 element closed on BS740474, 63 element found 5 (100pound)-rice caches PF 251 destroyed by crashing into the ground. At 1430hrs Bravo Company 68 element received 10 rounds of small arms fire at BS740614, engaged the area with 81mm and 105mm Artillery fire, requested and received Helix 32. At 1745hrs Bravo Company wrap up 63 element Check point 3 and check point 4 received 150 rounds, AK 47 fire, fired 81mm rounds and then swept the area with negative findings in the vicinity BS735628 received 15 more AK47 rounds continued the sweep with no results. Until they found 1 155 at BS738627 and 65 received 15 rounds of AK47 fire at BS735617. The 63 element swept into the area with negative results, at BS739628 63 element found medical supplies, 8 bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide, pain pills, cloth bandages, several raincoats, several pair of shoes, 100 pounds of rice and 400 pounds of salt all destroyed. Also found 5 VC gas masks, cooking and Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. Serving utensils bowls and spoons under of hooch, enough to serve 150 men. At 2350hrs Bravo Company 66 element on the Vietnamese side of ambush at BS737666 took one frag and 4 rounds of small arms fire, negative casualties Vietnamese said 10 VC evaded to the southwest.

 

Charlie Company
September 4, 1970

1-20 Infantry Eagle Fight at 0915hrs Charlie Company 53 PZ at BS765377 to LZ at BS615483 at 0928hrs, at 1015hrs 63 PZ at BS728429 to BS605478 at 1033hrs, and 23 at 1015hrs PZ BS728427 to LZ BS603484 at 1025hrs. At 1534hrs Charlie Company continues to conducts Eagle Flight 23 PZ BS585475 to LZ BS598485 at 1545hrs, At 1620 Charlie 53 PZ BS605478 to LZ BS609500 at 1640hrs. At 1010hrs Charlie Company 55 element found 2 bunkers at BS609477, 1 new and 1 fairly old, fresh boot prints in the area, will CS both bunkers, old bunker was more like a fighting position. At 1250hrs Charlie Company 23 element found at BS585475, 8 positions under rocks, 1 was a very small tunnel, all positions were shaped in a half moon position, altogether 50 to 75 meters long and 3 to 4’ long, looked to be about 1 week old. Also 800 pounds of rice found above ground, and 1 55 gallon drum buried. At 1332hrs Charlie Company 53 element has 1 female detained 45-47 with bad ID, also inside hootch found some documents and AK 47 springs. Charlie Company 63 element at 1400hrs at BS594470 63 element has 1 NVA KIA had a bamboo rucksack with poncho and hammock, engaged with small arms fire by point man who spotted him and open fire. At 1445hrs Charlie Company 53 element has 2 detainees at BS613474 with negative ID, 1 male 50 years old, and 1 female 35 years old. Charlie Company has a total of 3 detainees to send to Military Intelligence.

 

Delta Company
September 4, 1970

Delta Company continued their multiple patrolling and some Day ambushes in their Area of Operation. At 0659hrs Delta Company request tactical priority Dust Off at BS783387, 1 PF RF 172 with 102 temperature, vomiting, spasms, nausea the medic couldn’t diagnose. At 0700hrs Delta Company 56 closed on BS774365, the 65 element is moving out for BS735619, the 63 element moving out for BS735619, the 26 element moving out for BS740574. Delta Company continued their multiply patrolling with some Day Ambushes in their Area of Operation. At 1730hrs Delta Company the 23, 63, 09, 83, and 53 moving to Night Defense Position at BS765377.

 

Echo Company
September 4, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0512hrs 4.2 Mortar Platoon reports total expended Illumination 16 rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continues their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry.
