Headquarters and Headquarter Company
June 4, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0157hrs SGT Penley checked bunkers #5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 all were satisfactory. At 0730hrs LZ Liz Access Road is now open at this time. At 1510hs Message TO Brigade S-3 from S-3 Commanding General and Mr. Ludichan GS-14, Department of Army visited Fire Support Base Liz: 2 Battalion Command gave general situation briefing, including enemy dispositions. 2. Discussed movement of population as the war changes. 3. Discussed effect of My Lai on the troops has very little, if any. 4. Commanding General departed 1510hrs. At 1830hrs North OP spotted 1 person that looked like a GI in a Ville at grid BS752437. At 1847hrs Recon was alerted and left LZ LI to sweep Ville. At 1937hrs Recon completed sweep with negative findings and returned to LZ Liz. At 1900hrs MACV Mo Duc requested 1 Priority Dust Off in vicinity BS763421, 2 Vietnamese children with multiple frag wounds from mine negative Vietnamese Air Force CMJ 1855hrs Bird # 89 completed at 1919hrs to Quang Ngai. At 1950hrs TMF 296A target 2 to 3 sampans west to east at 3 miles per our, negative confirmation received 1950hrs engaged at 1954hrs with 10 HE rounds Artillery 105mm. At 1957hrs Saber 49 is on station for NH Box 67, out of box 67 with 2035hrs negative findings, now going into Box 63 and broke station at 2112hrs with negative findings in box 63. At 2017hrs TMF String 295 Target A activated with 3 to 5 personnel moving west to east at 3 miles per hour, metal confirmation and engaged at 2029hrs with 10 HE Artillery 105mm. At 2107hrs TMF vicinity BS762428 GS-6A has 5 packs moving north to south at 3 miles per hour AAU confirmed (Audio) and engaged at 2117hrs with 10 HE rounds 81mm Mortar. At 2128hrs South OP had a trip flare ignite and engaged with small arms fire (M-16, M-60 and M-79). At 2147hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Alpha 4, Bravo 7 and Delta 2 for a total of 13 out. At 2200hrs IOS Nui Vong spotted 7 personnel at vicinity BS67615831, engaged with 4.2 Mortar and Artillery, observed 1 secondary explosion, IOS continuing to observed area. At 2237hrs Bravo Company, LT Steddard inspected bunkers 15, 16, and 17 everything satisfactory. At 2325hrs Bravo Company LT Knight inspected bunkers 5, 6, 7, and 8 and all were satisfactory. At 2343hrs IOS Nui Vong vicinity BS676584 spotted 4 to 6 personnel at grid BS676584, engaged with 4.2 Mortar and observed 1 secondary explosion. Legend: 1st Platoon 34, 2nd Platoon 05, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 78, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
June 4, 1971

Alpha Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0401hrs 1st Platoon Rat Patrol moving out to vicinity BS730486. At 2000hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon Night Defense Position at BS723480, Command Post 2nd and 4th Platoon at BS723491 and 1st Platoon at BS740490 with 4 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Bravo Company
June 4, 1971

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and Access Road Security. At 0157hrs Bravo Company SGT Penley checked bunkers 5, 6, 7. 8 and 9 and all were satisfactory. At 2237hrs LT Studdard inspected bunkers and at 2325hrs Bravo Company LT Knight inspected bunkers. Bravo Company reports SP4 Maurice Damphousse was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (sick?).

 

Charlie Company
June 4, 1971

Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0540hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon moving to area of contact of last night at BS710428. At 0630hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon found an additional Chi Com and 1 additional wallet. At 1038hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol closed on BS727392, 1st Platoon patrol closed on BS713436 and the 3rd Platoon patrol closed on BS714413. At 1800hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon bought 1 40mm round dud from Vietnamese coke kid, 9 with 2 cans C Rations vicinity BS727392 round was rusty, about 30 days old was blown in place. At 2100hrs Charlie Company Night Defense Position locations 1st Platoon at BS710438, Command Post and 3rd Platoon at BS713411 with 1st Platoon ambush BS710438, 2nd Platoon at BS728385 with 7 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Delta Company
June 4, 1971

Delta Company continued using Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0729hrs Delta Company 1st and 4th Platoons in their Patrol Base at BS639561. At 0747hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon and Command Post is in their Patrol Base at BS639561. At 1345hrs Delta Company while on patrol vicinity BS654553, 2nd Platoon found 1 hooch approximately 4’ X 9’ X 6’ high. Inside were some pots, rain wear, guitars, baskets, 1 MVA mess kit, some documents, anti US propaganda sheets, 1 rifle knife. Also 15 rice cans, some partially full, some potatoes, hand tools recently used, rice in a cooking pot still warm, ammo for a 12 gage shot gun (9 rounds), 23 rounds SKS ammo and 10 M2 ammo. A bolt for an unknown type weapon, assorted clothing was also found. At 2018hrs Delta Company 1st and 4th Platoons moving to their Night Defense Position at BS639558. At 2104hrs Delta Company while in Patrol Base, Command Post received 3-4 M-79 rounds and 15-20 AK 47 rounds from 200 meters east vicinity BS656561. In response called in Fire Mission, fire came from a Ville, will check at 1st Light negative finding. At 2137hrs Delta Company Command Post and 2nd Platoon is in their Night Defense Position at BS660561 with 2 Mechanical Ambush out. At 2200hrs Nui Vong spotted 7 personnel at vicinity BS67615831, engaged with 4.2" Mortar and observed 1 secondary explosion, IOS continuing to observe area. At 2234hrs Command Post called a Fire Mission on the area they found the hootch today vicinity at BS 654553, had 2 secondary explosions. At 2359hrs IOS Nui Vong vicinity BS676584 spotted 4-6 personnel engaged with 4.2" Mortar and observed I secondary explosion.

 

Echo Company
June 4, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0755hrs Recon Platoon has now closed on LZ Liz.
