Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0233hrs LZ Liz North OP TPS-5 sighting show 23 personnel moving west to east at BS748447. At 0913hrs the Battalion Commander is leaving LZ Liz for Chu Lai and returned at 1330hrs. At 1005hrs Helix 36 (FAC) we are putting in an Air Strike at BS757379. Bomb Damage Assessment 2 bunkers destroyed and two trails cut and 100% exploded. At 1555hrs Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz and was briefed by LT Gibson and he left at 1605hrs. At 1615hrs LTC Fischer, a Mr. Garcia was in to see you, he said he would see you another day. At 1620hrs the Division Commander arrived at LZ Liz and was briefed by LT Gibson and left at 1635hrs.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1330hrs Headquarters Headquarter Company bunkers where inspected by LT Hardy and the Rear Area Bunkers was inspected by CPT Fitzpatrick.
Alpha Company
January 4, 1970
At 0758hrs Alpha Company the 04 and 05 element have returned to the Night Defense Position with negative results and the 44 element is moving out to their blocking position and will move to BS804495, BS795513 and block at grid BS780509. At 0903hrs Alpha Company the 44 element is moving to their blocking position. They took small arms fire at grid BS795504. We have negative casualties and care checking the area now. At 0920hrs a 44 pursed the element that fired on them until they came upon a sign that said mines, we are calling in 81mm. At 1050hrs Alpha Company Urgent Dust Off, Requested for one US with multiple frag wounds. The US hit a booby trap M-26 frag grenade Name Hernandez complete 1100hrs grid BS794487 (SP4 Yridro Hernandez right elbow and buttock). At 1121hrs Alpha Company new Day Logger is at BS797487. At 1200hrs the 44 element has closed on BS797498. The 44 element is sweeping south and at 1735hrs Alpha Company found 2 booby trap grenades at grid BS790998. They blew them in place. At 1640hrs Alpha Company moved into our Night Defense Position at BS800465. At 1730hrs Alpha Company the 04 element is moving to their snake location at BS798483. At 1810hrs Alpha Company the 24 element is moving to BS800465 and at 1835hrs we are in our Night Defense Position at BS800477. At 0922hrs Alpha Company the 04 snake is at BS798483 and the 24 element is at BS800465. At 2150hrs Alpha, Charlie and Delta Companies have been notified that Bravo Company has been hit with C/S gas. Make sure your personnel have gas masks.
Bravo Company

Bravo Company continued the use of Recon in Force and Saturation Patrolling in their Area of Operations. At 0056hrs Bravo Company the PF on the Northern Bridge Site reported that a grenade was thrown near 1 of their leader’s hootch. It went off and ignited his hootch, with negative casualties and we are checking out the area at this time. At 0615hrs the 25 element has closed on BS787424. At 0655hrs Bravo Company 48 element is closing on BS783433 and the 05 and 04 elements are sweeping to the area where they spotted lights last night at grid BS785477. At 0820hrs Bravo 09 is moving to BS754445. At 1018hrs Bravo Company the 09 element has 1 male Vietnamese detainee approximately 35 year of age. He had no ID and no weapon. He was dressed in white and he was attempting to evade us. At 1020hrs the 09 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS746444. At 1150hrs Bravo Company the 09 element has closed on the Twin Ville. At 1220hrs Bravo Company Routine Dust Off, Requested 1 PF with M-16 wounds from friendly PF fire, Dust Off complete at 1250hrs he was from the 183 PF unit. At 1300hrs Bravo Company the 06 element is moving on their patrol to 765455 and at 1320hrs the 06 patrol is at checkpoint 1 at BS465455. At 1345hrs Bravo Company the 06 patrol is at checkpoint 2 at BS770454. At 1805hrs Bravo Company will be operating the vicinity of BS777477 and BS781478 (do not give this info to the Vietnamese until tomorrow morning) message to MACV Mo Duc. At 1955hrs to Bravo Company have a 6 men with light gear to be ready to go at 0700hrs to be moved at 89 or Sierra 21 discretion. At 2035hrs the 06 element is receiving C/S gas from an unknown direction at grid BS771461. We also received two incoming rounds of M-79. We saw a mortar flash at grid BS775455 and received small arms fire from the same grid. We engaged this area with small arms fire and Artillery, and Gun ships. Bravo Company had their Mortar hit and the legs of the Mortar were damaged and negative casualties and results but we are still firing Artillery, we have a dud 81mm round at grid BS771461. At 2050hrs Gun Ships and the Flare ship are on station, the gun ships broke station at 2110hrs and the flare ship at 2117hrs. At 2130hrs All of Bravo Company has protective masks.
Charlie Company

At 0825hrs Charlie Company we are moving to our Night Defense Position at this time. At 0914hrs Charlie Company while crossing the river, the scout dogs alerted our lead element that then saw 3 individuals with camouflaged pith helmets. We found footprints on the sand bar in the river. At 0935hrs Charlie Company reports all elements across at gird BS733423 and now moving south. At 1017hrs Charlie Company we are at grid BS737416, we blew a 155 round in place. At 1115hrs Charlie Company 44 element has 1 Vietnamese male detainee, military, with no ID or weapon, was wearing green pants and shirt. He was observing the mine sweep from a wood line. We sent an element behind him and picked him up. We will have our Command and Control Helicopter pick him up at grid BS740532. At 1122hrs Charlie Company reports our location at grid BS751404. At 1250hrs Charlie Company our Night Defense Position is at BS785365, tomorrow we will move out of the Night Defense Position to the pre-planned location, we will leave the 64 element at the Night Defense Position for security. We will require artillery to fire grids prior to movement. At 1321hrs Charlie Company reports that we are moving out of our Day Logger. At 1350hrs our snake locations is at 757534. We found a tunnel complex of unknown length at BS758535, we bill blow the tunnel. At 1400hrs Charlie Company we found a white box 6" X 6" X 6" which had, radiosonde Lot # 0269. Weather Box destroy it where found, written on top at grid BS751404. At 1435hrs Charlie Company we are at grid BS753400. At 1510hrs Charlie Company we are moving to the south from grid BS753400. At 1655hrs Charlie Company our present location is at BS764385. At 1730hrs Charlie Company we found a boot marks at grid BS762387. The dog team leader said they looked to be 2 to 3 days old. We also spotted some smoke and suspect that it was used to warn the VC that there were US in the area. At 1750hrs Charlie Company we found a trail marker at grid BS768373 and well used river crossing. We found a campfire at grid BS762372 and put it our. At 1845hrs Charlie Company our Night Defense Position is at BS769374.
Delta Company

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0945hrs Delta Company all snake have closed on LZ Liz. At 1904hrs Delta Company reports the 07 element is at BS747437 with 06 element at BS764438, the 46 element is at BS767438 and the 26 element is at BS770440. At 0922hrs Alpha Company the 04 snake is at BS798483 and the 24 element is at BS800465. At 2150hrs Alpha, Charlie and Delta Companies have been notified that Bravo Company has been hit with C/S gas. Make sure your personnel have gas masks.
Echo Company
January 4, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0640hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fire 17, Observed Mission 5 for a total expended 150 He, 8 WP and 18 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission on LZ Liz.
