Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0018hrs PF 142 vicinity BS751507 Chau Me OP received rounds 60mm mortar fire, none within their perimeter, no injuries they believe that they came from their south. At 0205hrs TMF at 0141hrs Sting 314 B, unknown size with metal confirmed and a stationary target engaged at 0335hrs with 12 HE Artillery 105mm. At 0741hrs Helix 39 is on station. At 0930hrs Warlord 7 is on station with Air Calvary Boxes 61 and 51N. At 1007hrs Warlord 7 checked box 64, LOH had problems with Recon due to turbulence and team moved into box 51 north. They had negative findings. At 1030hrs Warlord 7 vicinity BS661531 has inserted Blues to check out the area. Found cave, recently used, with bicycle in it. Extracted Blues at 1107hrs and found an additional bicycle, 1 green uniform, fresh boot tracks and signs or recent activity. At 1345hrs S-5 vicinity BS766473, 1-20 Infantry Disaster Relief Program Delta Company 1st Platoon and Headquarters and Headquarter Company medic’s distributed building materials and medical supplies to the homeless victims of Feb 1 VC attack and LZ Max. Relief included approximately 50 ammo boxes, medical packs, coffee, soap, and candy for the children. After the distribution of materials, the villages turned in VIP items and would not accept payment. VIP 1 25 pound shape charge, 2 B-40 rockets (complete), 1 B-40 body, 17 assorted hand frag, 2 155 He rounds and all where destroyed in palace. Also the Village chief sent a radio (HT-1) to LZ Liz, to facilitate direct communication for illumination support in any future contact. At 1530hrs Primo 6 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 1620hrs RF 168 Company found 2 RPG vicinity BS766532 one was turned in to the RF Outpost at Mui Ong Do and the other was brought to OP Wink at (BS699538) and blown in place (It had marking 55218K 11-44-K). At 1530hrs Warlords vicinity BS738596, reacting on intelligence from RF forces, Warlords conducted an armed reconnaissance into the area and spotted 15 military age males. They inserted the blues (animals) and immediately received small arms fire. The Warlords engaged and killed 2 VC in the area; in addition they received small arm fire from BS738597 and killed 2 more VC at BS738595, results so far 4 VC KIA. Warlords continued to Recon by fire with negative results. Blues then began to sweep the area of contact. At BS738597 the blues blew a bunker with a secondary explosion. At 1740hrs Warlord 29 reports they took ground fire 2 hits and fired was returned by the Warlord LOH with results 4 VC KIA. At 1805hrs The blues were extracted, taken to OP Wink where Charlie Company 3rd Platoon and Command Post were picked up for insertion into the contact area. LZ for Charlie Company was completed at 1825hrs cold. Results BS735596 5 VC KIA, BS736598 2 VC KIA, BS737596 5 VC KIA, plus 1 AK47 and 5 to 6 rucksacks recovered. Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

Bravo Company
February 3, 1971

Bravo Company continued to set up Patrol Bases and use multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation and used multiple night ambushes in their area. At 0655hrs Bravo Company reports all ambushes have closed. At 1002hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving to BS745414 and 1st Platoon patrol is moving out for BS704403. At 1327hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon patrol closed BS739456 and 2nd Platoon patrol moved out for BS732404. At 1630hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 1st and 4th Platoon at BS732432, 1st Platoon ambushes BS732431 and BS922433, Command Post with 1st and 4th Platoons Patrol Base at BS728435, Command Post patrol at 0630hrs BS716444, 1st Platoon patrol at 1330hrs at BS711439. At 1923hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon BS746426, 2nd Platoon ambushes BS746427 and BS746425. At 1944hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 4th and 1st Platoon at BS732432, 1st Platoon ambushes at BS733433 and BS732431. Also Bravo Company has night locations 2nd Platoon BS746426, BS746427 and BS746425 with 3rd Platoon at BS732454, BS733455 and BS732453.

 

Charlie Company
February 3, 1971

At 0910hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving to BS672580. At 1205hrs 3rd Platoon patrol is moving to OP Pax at BS693585. At 1530hrs Charlie Company Warlords vicinity BS738596 reacting on intelligence from RF forces, Warlords conducted an armed reconnaissance and spotted 15 military age males. They inserted the Blues (animals) and immediately received small arms fire. The Warlords engaged and KIA 2 VC in the area, in addition they received small arms fire from BS738597 and KIA 2 VC in that area, in addition they received small arms fire from BS738597 and KIA 2 VC at BS738597 the Blues blew a bunker with a secondary explosion. At 1740hrs Warlord 29 took ground fire and 2 hits, fire was returned by the Warlord LOH KIA 1 VC and at 1805hrs the Blues were extracted taken to OP Wink where Charlie Company 3rd Platoon and Command Post were picked up for insertion into the contact area. LZ for Charlie Company was completed at 1825hrs cold, the results after at BS7375596, 5 VC KIA, BS736598, 2 VC KIA BS737596, 1 VC Chu Hoi BS740589, 1 VC WIA plus 1 AK 47 and 5 to 6 rucksacks recovered. At 1825hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS739598, 3rd Platoon and Command Post were inserted to replace Warlord Blues, sweeping Northeast through the contact area they found 1 male VC wearing all blue KIA and 1 female KIA wearing all black. Continued their sweep Charlie Company engaged and captured 2 VC WIA and 1 VC KIA wearing all black and wearing pistol belt with US hand Frag. One of the 3 was carrying some documents, which will be back hauled tomorrow. The 3 WIA where dusted Off to Duc Pho after the Dust Off was completed 3rd Platoon spotted 1 Booby trap and markers for another. They halted and will continue in their search at first light. At 2015hrs Charlie Company IOS at OP Wink had sighted vicinity BS706545, a Company sized element moving north, requested Gun ships. At 2028hrs Singer 88 and Hornet 241 came on station while checking the area sighted footprints and possible rucksacks. Fired on suspected enemy location and did receive some small arms fire. At 2120hrs Stinger 88 broke station. At 2135hrs IOS sighted 35 to 40 personnel they dud engaged with small arms fire and 81mm and 50 cal. The sighting then appeared to move to the north and engaged with ARVN Artillery. At 2245hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS739596 reports they heard 2 VC/NVA 200 meters southeast of their location, are screaming and yelling profanity and in obvious pain. Also request mine and tracker dog for first thing in morning, due to operations and terrain crevices, caves and spider holes. At 2304hrs Charlie Company at OP Wick vicinity BS715569, IOS sighted 100 personnel stationary in a tree line. Location proximity was too close to a Ville to engage with artillery and they were unable to engage with gun ships, couldn’t scramble them. At 2323hrs personnel began moving north, engaged with 50 caliber and working a fire mission up at this time. IOS at Nui Vong sighted 10-15 personnel vicinity BS712562 moving north. At 2340hrs spotted approximately 40 personnel (same group, just more people) moving north, have not engaged.

 

Delta Company
February 3, 1971

At 0735hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol cancelled. At 1345hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon and Headquarters and Headquarter Company medic’s distributed building materials and medical supplies to the homeless victims of Feb 1 VC attack and LZ Max. Relief included approximately 50 ammo boxes, medical packs, coffee, soap, and candy for the children and conducted a VIP program.

 

Echo Company
February 3, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry and LZ Liz. SGT Jerry J. Ford went to Company B 23rd Medical Battalion at 1400hrs.
