Headquarters and Headquarter Company
February 3, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 1100hrs E Troop 1st Calvary report at BS844377 spotted 20 people with weapons. At 1110hrs 1-20 Infantry requests 3 slicks to pick up troops from Alpha Company and Combat Assault to vicinity BS844377 and slicks sent to pick up location. At 1145hrs 1-20 Infantry spotted a group of people at LZ Carentan appear to be youngsters between ages 7-13.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0020hrs 11th Brigade reports Total mortar-rocket report for LZ Bronco, 21 rounds of 81/82 mortar, and 4 rounds of 60mm mortar with no rockets. At 2210hrs Base Defense Artillery Hill received small arms fire and automatic weapons fire from BS820395, returned fire with artillery with negative results.

 

Alpha Company
February 3, 1968

At 1110hrs 1-20 Infantry requested 3 slicks to pick up troops from Alpha Company and conduct a Combat Assault into vicinity BS844377. At 1225hrs Alpha Company the 2nd Platoon at BS855380 with the 3rd Platoon at BS872350. At 1235hrs at BS967348, had 2 WHA Dust Off, SP4 Szczupha evac to Qui Nhon and SP4 Griffen returned to duty, neither one was serious (SP4 Leonard Griffin and SP4 James W. Szczupaj). At 1610hrs Alpha Company at BS866365, 2 VC evading, 1 VC WIA female Dust Off was being called, man was carrying a carbine, escaped. At 1730hrs at BS867361, 1 VC evading, results 1 VC KIA had note book with papers in pocket, will send back through channels. At 1730hrs Alpha Company reports civilian evac 800 meters west of bridge 107also received sniper fire from BS842321. At 2100hrs Alpha Company has moved in to their Night Defense Position at grid BS885535 with ambushes BS881339 and BS888331.

 

Bravo Company
February 3, 1968

At 0750hrs Bravo Company is located at BS778393 and engaged 3 VC and now following some blood trails with negative results. At 1225hrs Bravo Company reports their location at BS773411. At 1225hrs Bravo Company at BS773411 engaged 1 VC with results of 1 VC KIA. Bravo Company set up their Night Defense Position at BS773411.

 

Charlie Company
February 3, 1968

Charlie Company (Task Force Barker 198 Light Infantry Brigade) has the Security Mission for LZ Uptight and will conduct patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1430hrs Charlie Company observed 1 VC evading to northeast, refused to halt, engaged and results is 1 KIA VC also 1 more VC tried to evade was shot at BS724814 with results of 1 more KIA VC. At 1445hrs Charlie Company received small arms fire after searching area, detained 1 VC hiding in brush east of LZ Dottie will evac to LZ Bayonet about 1530hrs at BS738887. At 1520hrs Charlie Company at BS724814 found 3 tunnels, each big enough for 4-6 men. At 2115hrs 1-14 Artillery B Battery will move from LZ Uptight move started at 1400hrs and completed at 2105hrs and A 4 gun 105 Delta Battery from 6-11Artillery in place now.

 

Delta Company
February 3, 1968

Secured and search area outside SA HUYNH with the ARVN Forces are searching and clearing the Village, Delta Company 3 Platoon is still on Bridges 99-100.

 

Echo Company
February 3, 1968

Echo Company and 4.2 platoon and radar platoon where located on LZ Thunder to provide direct support to the Battalion. At 1500hrs Recon Platoon is at BS895315 receiving heavy fire. Have gun ships at location, will check out area and believe to have flushed 30 VC from area where a vehicle was ambush on February 2, 1968 as Recon Platoon Mission has turned to Road Security for Highway 1.
