December 3, 1970

Forward Area: (1-20 Infantry Headquarters) TOC is located at LZ Liz and will continue to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0600hrs Weather: Variable cloudiness with isolated rain showers. Wind 10 to 15 knots from the northwest, Temperature to be 79 to73 with humidity 90-70, outlook through Saturday increasing cloudiness with rain. At 0950hrs Mo Duc on 281615hrs November 1970 vicinity BS719640 ARVN 15 ton tractor and trailer hit a unknown type mine, possible command detonated with Results: Truck destroyed, 1 ARVN KIA, the driver and 1 female civilian WIA. At 1300hrs the S-4 the resupply bird is on station. At 1435hrs Medical Platoon, Med Cap conducted at Twin Ville, vicinity BS778442. Security provided by PF Platoon and Sykes’ Regulars Standbys, treated 158 civilians for the following illnesses, Digestive tract 32, Eye problems 11, Skin Diseases 28, URI 44 and other 43. At 1550hrs 1-20 Infantry Warlord 14 on station for Combat Assault, CPT Parker departed LZ Liz for Combat Assault. At 1700hrs Warlord, vicinity BS660561 Warlord Skeeter got 2 KIA both evaded when helicopters approached and were killed. At 1745hrs Helix 35 is breaking station at this time. At 1815hrs Warlords breaking station Combat Assault with Bravo Company is completed CPT Parker S-3 returned to LZ Liz. At 1400hrs Brigade S-2 Area of Operation extension for 4 ARVN, Date/Time/Grid 040600hrs to 072400hrs, November 1970 LRRP team 3 inserted at BS630500 to BS650500 to BS650530 to BS620530 to BS620510 to BS630500 will be going to Recon for the 38 Battalion Disapproved by CPT Parker. The Area of Operation extension for 4 ARVN Calvary Date/Time/Grid 082400hrs November 1970, from BS690597 southwest along road to BS640502 then north to BS640572 and Area of Operation 060001hrs to 082400hrs December 1970 from BS616640 east to rail road, southwest along railroad berm to BS689599 along river southwest to BS632575 west to road, north along road BS615640 was disapproved CPT Parker. At 2045hrs 1-20 Infantry Area of Operation extension request ASAP to 152400hrs from BS6560 to BS6860 to BS6859 to BS686588 to southeast along river to BS700573 to BS7055 to BS6953 to BS6453 to BS6458 to BS6559 to start. Legend: 1st Platoon 02-07, 2nd Platoon 92-97, 3rd Platoon 52-57, 4th Platoon 42-47 and CO 08.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
December 3, 1970

At 0653 Alpha Company 1st, 3rd, 4th, and Command Post at BS756564. At 0910hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS770566 located 1 booby trap, Chi Com grenade on side of trail. A trip wire was stretched across the trail in a small trench covered with plastic and twigs, making it a pressure type device, Destroyed in place. At 0940hrs Alpha Company vicinity BS750562 the 3rd Platoon received 2 rounds small arms fire, from the west at a distance of 100 meters. The patrol returned fire and then began to sweep the area where they received the fire, with negative findings. At 1345hrs Alpha Company Command Post vicinity BS755565 received 3 M-79 rounds in their Day Logger. Came from a wood line 300 meters to their north west 1 man hit in lower arm, will send in on back haul. (Name Dexter Carr) we checked area with negative finding. At 1948hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon BS746574, ambushes BS748572, BS750570, Command Post and 4th Platoon BS758557, 2nd Platoon BS774563 ambush BS775550 and 3rd Platoon at BS769552, and ambush BS772550. Alpha Company reports PFC Dexter Carr was wounded and treated at B 23 Medical with Frag Wound to right arm.

 

Bravo Company
December 3, 1970

At 1230hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS703593, while moving toward the railroad berm, spotted 2 enemies with packs evading to the west. The platoon fired warning shots at the fleeing personnel, and they continued to the west. They engaged them with small arms fire resulting in 1 female VC KIA, age 25, negative ID wearing white and black. Her pack contained rice and potatoes. They engaged at 300 meters and her body had 2 scars from previous gunshot wounds and the 2nd VC evaded to the west as the 3rd platoon will continue pursue with negative finding. At 1312hrs Bravo Company in the vicinity BS703584 requests Urgent Dust Off for 4 US who had hit a booby trap. The trap was a can of Petna set up on a trail, with trip wire. The following WHA personnel (Rowe, Cantwell, Schmidt, Lt. Illingsworth) were Dust Off completed 1325hrs. At 1950hrs Bravo Company, 1st Platoon BS674540, 2nd Platoon at BS674534, Command Post and 4th Platoon at BS679554, and 3rd Platoon at BS666565. Bravo Company reports that SP4 Dennis L. Cantwell, 1LT William Illingworth with frag wounds to both arms, both legs and abdomen, PFC Frank A, Schmidt with where evac to 91st Evac Hospital along with PVT Larry Rowe with Frag Wounds to B 23 Medical. At 1950hrs Bravo Company reports their Night Locations 1st Platoon BS674540, 2nd Platoon at BS674534, Command Post and 4th Platoon at BS679554 and 3rd Platoon at BS666565.

 

Charlie Company
December 3, 1970

At 0730hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon in location at BS742612, 1st Platoon at BS738593 and 2nd Platoon at BS730600. Charlie Company 1st Platoon moved to BS738598 and found 1 OP and destroyed it. They then moved to BS733600 and checked out a house at that location and found 1,000 pounds of destroyed rice, destroyed by Air Strike on 1 December 1970. At 1145hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS732600, located 2 tunnels on a large berm, and had overhead cover. Both tunnels were reinforced with bamboo walls. Each tunnel had an entrance approximately 4’ high, 3’ wide and was large enough for 5-6 people. Charlie Company now searching the area and will destroy all tunnels. At 1140hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS738618, found 1 US Boot with severed foot inside. No dog tags found on boot, a body bag will be sent out and the foot and boot will be back hauled to 23rd Medical at Bronco. At 1250hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS735600, request Urgent Dust Off for 5 US who hit a booby trap. It was a claymore in daisy chain with a 105mm or 155mm Artillery rounds. Triggering device was a trip wire and it was located in vicinity of a trial on which the element was moving. Line # Brown, Negren, Davis, Barefoot, Scoville, Dust Off was completed at1305hrs. At 1150hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS729599 and BS729597 located 2 bunkers, 1 led into a tunnel. Near the bunker there was a deep ditch running north and south with deep foliage and overhead cover. The ditch had steps leading down in to the bunker. I appeared to be a good route of travel for anyone using it. Tunnel was 3’ wide and 4’ high with steps leading down into it. Air Strike was being put into the area at this time. At 1520hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS731603 found 1 Booby Trap, It was a can of Petna with smoke grenade firing device, had a trip wire and was camouflaged, appeared to be about 3 weeks old also found along some grading that a bull dossier had put there. At 1745hrs Charlie Company at BS738618, Helix reported that 1 fighter took ground fire during the 3rd Air Strike. Fighter did not know where fire came from. Charlie Company observed negative ground fire during the Air Strike. At 1821hrs Charlie Company reports 1st Platoon is in location at BS730617, 2nd Platoon is at BS729611 and 3rd Platoon is at BS747614. Charlie Company reports that SSGT HOWARD JAMES SCOVILLE with MFW both legs and abdomen also face (DOW See December 4, 1970), along with SGT Marcus J. Brown left eye, PFC Cesar L. Negrow with MFW both legs and abdomen, PFC John W. Devis right hand where evac to the 91 Evac Hospital and PFC James E. Barefoot with was evac to B 23 Medical with right hands wounds.

 

Delta Company
December 3, 1970

At 0815hrs Delta Company all elements in location vicinity BS719590. Moved to LZ Liz and taken over the Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
December 3, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
