August 3, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0640hrs E Troop the tracks are on the move to the first area of concentration of BS754557. At 0832hrs the 26 Engineer for 29 July a total of 26 hours were worked clearing 50 acres (500 X 400) in the area BS747630 to BS749635 to BS745634 to BS745634. We destroyed 6 bunkers, 50 meters of trench line and 50 meters of tunnels. We destroyed 1 105 Artillery round, with 1 D7 dead line with a bad hydraulic hose. We do have 9 D7, 1 CEV, 1 AC and 1 M548 all operational. At 0833hrs 26 Engineer for 30 July 1970 a total of 56 hours were worked clearing 160 acres (300 X 1000) in the area BS750650 to BS750643 to BS757643 to BS858645 to BS754645 to BS753650 with 7 bunkers destroyed. We have 9 D7 operations with 1 dead line with a bad hydraulic hose, 1 CEV, 1 AC and 1 M548 all operational. At 0834hrs 26 Engineer on 31 July 1970 a total of 100 acres were cleared in the area BS745636 to BS7446636 to BS745637 to BS745537 and BS750645 to BS749638 to BS743639 to BS743642. There were 14 bunkers destroyed, 300 meters of trench, 140 meters of tunnels and a dud 155 Artillery round destroyed. Also reports 2 D7 dead lines with 1 with a blown valve gasket and 1 with a bad hydraulic hose and 8 D7 operational, 1 CEV, 1 AC and 1 M548 all where operational. At 0835hrs 26 Engineer on August 1, 1970 a total of 63 hours were worked clearing 60 acres in the area BS744639 to BS742638 to BS744642 and BS748636 to BS748638 to BS751636 to BS741639. Reports 9 bunkers, 200 meters of trenches, 75 meters of tunnel, 1 155 artillery round, 1 M-79 round and 1 M-26 grenade destroyed. 1 D7 is dead line with a fuel injector and 1 dead line with a dead starter also 8 D7 are operational, 1 CEV, 1 AD and 1 M548 all operational. At 0846hrs 26 Engineer reports on August 2, 1970 a total of 56 hours were worked clearing 120 acres in the area of BS746636 to BS743638 to BS748639 and BS750650 to BS753650 to BS750660 to BS748660. Also reports 4 bunkers, 100 meters of trench, 1 81mm mortar round and 1 5" naval round. Along 1 D7 is deadline with a bad fuel injector Also 8 D7 Operational there was 1 CEV, 1 AC, and 1 M548 all operational. At 1000hrs 1-20 Infantry requests to Brigade a Calvary Box 66 from BS7241 and BS6251 in the Date/Time/Grid 04066 to 041800 was cleared by 1LT Bray and the gradiometer mission #7 East to the Coast. At 1127hrs S-3 Alpha, Charlie and Delta Companies have re emphasized the Rules of Engagement for all personnel. At 1149hrs E Troop we are in our Day Logger at LZ Dragon. At 1130hrs Reference spot report by Charlie Company at 1039hrs, Major Witt, Senior Advisor of the Mo Duc District, reported that a VC dressed in civilian clothes had warned civilians in the vicinity of the new fishing Ville at BS750680 not to move into the area due to booby traps. Also reported that PF previously designated to operate in the new fishing Ville had no done so. Major Witt indicated that the compound build for the PF by the land Clearing team had no been occupied and was reported to be booby-trapped. At 1545hrs TMF we have frequency modulation of 1531hrs at String 76, Stationary target with negative clearance. At 1615hrs TMF we have frequency modulation at 1513hrs at String 73 target B with 5 packs moving northeast to southwest at 3 miles per hour with metal confirmed and negative clearance due to an RD zone. At 1720hrs 26 Engineer reports negative Operations today for maintenance day. At 1830hrs S-5 Report Leaflets dropped since 29 Aug 1970 as follows BS7258, BS7367, BS7363, BS7066, BS6943, BS7044, BS7155, BS7459, BS7462, BS7265, BS7269, BS6942, BS7043, and BS7143 for a total of 573,000 leaflets of varying themes. There was 210 minutes of tape time directed toward Chieu Hoi for unit C-219, were played by Brigade organic aircraft. Also there was 10,000 Leaflets Land Clearing explanation leaflets were dropped by this unit on 29 July 1970. We requested an armed propaganda team through 1LT Walters at Brigade S-5, also Health and Sanitation leaflets were requested through the same source to be handed out during Med Caps performed by pacification Company. At 1845hrs 1-20 Infantry we request a routine Dust Off of 1 US suspected to be under the influence of narcotics, Name Rivera, completed at 1930hrs. At 2050hrs Brigade no aircraft available on 4 August for Bravo Company move, the only way for Bravo Company to return on 4 August is for Bravo Company to walk back to the 1-20 Infantry direct coordination with 4-3 infantry is authorized. At 2300hrs PPS-5 Radar spotted 4 to 5 personnel moving northwest at BS724447 and negative clearance Recon rat patrol was notified.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
August 3, 1970

At 0810hrs Alpha Company the 52 element spotted 3 enemies with weapons at approximately 1000 meters and requested clearance for 81mm and clearance was given at BS770599. The 52 element to check the area at 0850hrs with negative finding (completed at 1100 hrs). At 0928hrs Alpha Company the 75 element has one male detainee 23 years old and wearing a black shirt and green pants, name Sau Muo Boo. He had an ID and was military age and held until he could be checked out on the black list. He was released grid BS722612. At 1028hrs Alpha Company 52 found 2 booby traps and destroyed them in place.

 

Bravo Company
August 3, 1970

At 0800hrs Bravo Company Command Post at BS706378, 1st Platoon at BS714369, 2nd Platoon at BS713372 and 3rd Platoon at BS709377. At 1106hrs Command Post is at BS704366 and 3rd Platoon at BS702373. At 1230hrs Bravo Company Command Post BS704366, 1st Platoon at BS712367 and BS712361, 2nd Platoon at BS705360. At 2010hrs Reference Bravo Company returning to 1-20 Infantry Area of Operation by foot on Aug 4 and will not be able to determine before morning of the 4th. At 2100hrs Bravo Company at BS707374 and BS709361, 2nd Platoon at BS702376 and BS705369, 3rd Platoon at BS711376 and 4th Platoon at BS706379.

 

Charlie Company
August 3, 1970

Charlie Company is using Saturation Patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0824hrs Charlie Company the 74 element engaged 2 VC at 300 meters, both carrying M-16 rifles and wearing black pajamas with shorts pants at grid BS697584. The enemy evaded west into a hedgerow and we are in pursued with negative finding. At 1039hrs Charlie Company 33 element while patrolling through grid BS751681 to BS752674, found slips of paper indicating a heavily booby trap and mined area to west of above grids. Paper 50 to 75 meters apart Kit Carson Scout said to stay away from area definitely booby-trapped and Charlie Company notified all their elements.

 

Delta Company
August 3, 1970

At 0617hrs Delta Company the 70, 42 elements is at BS760564, the 54 element is at BS747572 the 55 element is at BS752582, the 56 element is at BS758572, the 26 element is at BS756556 and the 32 Night Defense Position is at BS756560. At 0718hrs Delta Company give E Troop a hand with one of their trucks stuck in a large rice paddy and need some assistance from there rear, giving a hand. At 1024hrs Delta Company E Troop 70 has completed the sweep north with negative findings and en route to LZ Dragon. At 1051hrs Delta Company the 54 element is at BS752578, the 55 Day Logger is at BS752578 the 56 element Day Logger is at BS755557 at the 35 and 36 elements Day Logger is also at BS755557. At 2045hrs Delta Company 35 while moving to snake took two rounds of sniper fire from BS753553; their location BS751553: returned small arms fire, artillery on call, negative casualties or damage.

 

Echo Company
August 3, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0500hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 1 for a total expended 18 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon reports their location at LZ Liz and continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry. At 2030hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at 22 at BS736437 and 21 is at BS724439.
