Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 3, 1969
Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0750hrs the Command and Control Helicopter made Dust Off of the 2 VC WIA from LZ Liz completed at 0705hrs. At 1018hrs Helix have set of fighters on station, will put in Air Strike at BS846384. Regard 81 the 1-20 Infantry requested a CS drop at 1600hrs 4 August grid BS715458. At 1228hrs Regard 99 LZ Liz request Urgent Dust Off for 1 VC with severe head wound completed at 1232hrs. At 2055hrs Alpha Company on LZ Liz have movement on bunkers 17-18 will be putting 81mm and 4.2 on it. And then at 2100hrs Bunker 18 reports seeing 5 personnel near access road when the illumination was fired putting 81mm mortar fire in. At 2305hrs Alpha Company my 23 and 55 elements are moving out at this time, the 23 element will be 100 meters in front of bunkers 7-8 and the 55 element will be 100 meters in front of bunkers 15-16 and snakes in place at 2325hrs.
Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion.
Alpha Company
August 3, 1969
At 0130hrs LZ Liz reports early this morning Bunker 17 spotted something in wire, engaged with small arms fire and 81mm mortars fire and will check at first light. Check this morning found 3 VC one KIA and 2 WIA weapons captured 5 Chi Com grenades and one US .45 cal pistol, Command and Control helicopter did the Dust Off for the WIA VC in the morning. Alpha Company the 21 element is in position on Red Ball Ready to move out when word is given and Alpha Company 21 element starting its sweep of their Area of Operation. At 1225hrs Alpha Company 21 element location BS768453 1 VC male, age 20 years, wearing blue shorts and had attempted to evade, the 23 element fired and hit him in the head. The snatch ship took him to LZ Liz for Dust Off. Also the sharks were credited with 1 KIA at 1230hrs Alpha 21 element location BS768453 1 US hit by friendly M-79 frag with minor wound in stomach, Dust Off by little Bird (Dupuis) Dust Off completed at 1235hrs. At 2055hrs Alpha Company have movement on bunkers 17 and 18 will be putting 81mm and 4.2mm on it. At 2100hrs Bunkers 18 reports sitting 5 personnel near access road when the illumination was fired and putting 81mm in at this time. The 23 and 55 element are moving out at this time 23 element will be 100 meters in front of bunkers 7 and 8 and the 55 element will be 100 meters in front of bunkers 15 and 16 snakes in place at 2325hrs.
Bravo Company
August 3, 1969
At 0730hrs Bravo Company is moving out of Night Defense Position to Day Logger. At 1600hrs Bravo Company the 91 element picked up 1 VCS male, military age, at grid BS808015. He didn’t have ID, carrying army type compass, dress in blue trouser and he has only one leg may have gotten the other leg blown off while setting up booby trap. The 91 element also found one firing device for smoke grenade, near location of the VCS pick up. Bravo Company we are moving out at this time for Night Defense Position at BS810457 and the 95 snake at BS810457.
Charlie Company
August 3, 1969
At 0605hrs Charlie Company 51 element are now moving out of our Night Defense Position and closed on LZ Bronco at 0625hrs and Charlie Company goes on their Stand Down at Chu Lai.
Delta Company
August 3, 1969
Delta Company at 0540hrs location BS807414 we just received approximately 10 rounds of semi-automatic AK-47 fire from a position from about 200 meter north of our perimeter. We had negative causalities and we are not calling in Artillery or 81mm at this time. Delta Company planned day logger is at BS789427. Delta Company continued to sweep and search their Area of operation and at 1910hrs moved to their Night Defense Position at BS774447. Delta Company reports the 1LT Robert E. Maxwell evac to 91st Evac Hospital and SP4 Tony L. Homes evac to 27th Surgical Hospital.
Echo Company
August 3, 1969
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0635hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Schedule fire 12, observed missions 5 with a total expend 58 HE 4 WP 16 CS. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 1037hrs Security Platoon leaving LZ Goldie, heading for Duc Pho at this time. At 0810hrs Recon Platoon leaving wire at this time. At 1125hrs Recon Platoon is now at checkpoint 4 at BS734443 and braking for chow. At 1315hrs Recon Platoon is going to blow a small bridge at grid BS741431. At 1345hrs Recon closed on LZ Liz at this time.
