Headquarters and Headquarter Company
October 31, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units their Area of Operations. At 1431hrs Headquarter and Headquarters Company 19 Engineer at 1315hrs at BS915245, ¼ and ¾ ton truck vehicle moving north on Highway 1. The ¼ ton had a flat after changing the tire and starting to move back on the road it received automatic weapons fire from west side of road vicinity BS905255. The automatic weapons hit ¼ ton causing it to turn over, results 1 US WHA, the WHA was moved to LZ Thunder and Dusted Off, the ¼ ton was a combat loss. APC arrived, gun ships on station fired on suspected ambush location with negative assessment. At 2251hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC at BS889294 Shower 23 received approximately 15-20 rounds sniper fire from northeast of Bridge 104. Minutes later received 15-20 more rounds from south negative casualties or damage. At 2255hrs LZ Thunder request Dust Off for 1 US wounded in neck by gunshot. At 2300hrs 1 US wounded died at 2300hrs investigation under way, investigation office has been appointed see November 1, 1968.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1440hrs Headquarter and Headquarters Det. Reports 4 VCS in front of bunker 57 about 150 meters while making a sweep in front of F sector Bunker line.

 

Alpha Company
October 31, 1968

Alpha Company LRRP at BS759349, Alpha 85 at BS761384, Alpha Company at 0701hrs 1st PZ and Last LZ at 0740hrs LZ was cold. Alpha Company at 1700hrs Command Post is at BS809388, 71 at BS786388 roving patrol the points BS806405, BS813401, BS823402 and BS829400. LATE SPOT At 2255hrs LZ Thunder requests Dust Off for 1 US wounded in neck by gunshot, 1 US wounded died at 2300hrs, investigation under way investigation officer has been has been appointed see November 1, 1968. Alpha Company reports PFC RONALD L. SCHUYLER LISTED AS KIA. PFC Michael L. Schultz was evac to 312th Evac Hospital at 1858hrs with FRIAR.

 

Bravo Company
October 31, 1968

Bravo Company is at LZ Dragon with 68 at BS732502 and 60 at BS718497 as they prepare to move into Operation VERNON LAKE II tomorrow.

 

Charlie Company
October 31, 1968

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. Charlie Company is preparing for Operation VERNON LAKE II. At 0800hrs Charlie Company conducts a Combat Assault PZ at 0732hrs and LZ 0740hrs cold. At 0932hrs Charlie Company LRRP BS815298, 82 is at BS820275. At 1300hrs Charlie Company at BS847308 received 3 M-79 rounds also 3-5 rounds of small arms fire returned fire also checking area at the present time. At 1700hrs Charlie Company reports their location Charlie 84 ambush at BS836356. At 2255hrs LZ Thunder request Dust Off for 1 US wounded in neck by gunshot. At 2300hrs 1 US wounded died at 2300hrs investigation under way, investigation office has been appointed (see November 1, 1968).

 

Delta Company
October 31, 1968

At 0932hrs Delta Company 68 is at BS933238, 40 at Bridge 84. At 1700hrs Delta Company reports locations 82 at BS877278, 41 at BS922203, 70 LP BS933223, 84 roving patrol with Check points BS875279, BS879271, BS972275 and BS837249. At 889294 received approximately 15 to 20 rounds of sniper fire from northeast on Bridge 104 minutes received 15 to 20 rounds of fire from the south negative casualties or damage. Delta Company at 1856hrs in vicinity BS927167 Delta 84 element was ambushed by VC with M-79 1 round and small arms fire and from 3 automatic weapons, results 3 US WHA and 1 US KHA. Dust Off was completed at 1912hrs 1 KHA and 2 WHA with frag wounds and 1 WHA shock (condition). Dog wounded by M-79 frag and small arms fire condition of dog good following surgery and the KIA PFC Schuyler Delta Company. At 1900hrs Delta Company reports their locations D 82 ambush at BS927168, PFC RONALD LEE SCHUYLER LISTED AS KIA and PFC Charles E. Waldrop (FRIAR 1858hrs) was evac to 312th Evac Hospital.

 

Echo Company
October 31, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder and 2 squads on LZ Charlie Brown where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion).
