Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Ross for Operation WHEELER-WALLOWA and are OPCON to the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. At 1130hrs Road from LZ Baldy to LZ Ross is reported open by 1-20 Infantry. At 1315hrs 1-20 Infantry received reported that engineers hit a booby trap on Highway 535 l click from Checkpoint E, 6 Dust Off and 2-1 Infantry holds convoy at LZ Baldy. At 1355hrs Convoy for LZ Ross is departing at this time. Report received that it was a booby trap was incorrect the Engineers were moving dud ammo to safer location to dispose of it when an explosion occurred. At 1450hrs Convoy has closed LZ Ross. At 1644hrs Convoy is departing LZ Ross for LZ Baldy and closes at 1732hrs.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0900hrs Charlie Company 39 Engineer reports at BS717596 on May 30, 1968 vehicle received sniper fire driver got excited, result vehicle turned over at culvert site and pinned 2 US under it in the water, 2 KIA.
Alpha Company
May 31, 1968
Alpha Company patrols from their Night Defense Position some saturation patrolling. Alpha Company is moving to AT986314 to AT978308. At 0833hrs Alpha Company at BT019357 Command and Control Helicopter received 4 rounds of small arms fire while leaving abobe element area. Did not take any hits, Alpha Company is going to send element into the location to check area.
Bravo Company
May 31, 1968
Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Ryder and will be conducting local Security Patrols in their Area of Operation. Bravo Company will maintain 1 platoon at a local OP at AT960360. At 1207hrs Bravo Company at AT960363 observed and engaged 1 VC results is 1 VC KIA and at 1710hrs Bravo Company at AT960363 observed and engaged 2 VC evading west results in 2 VC KIA.
Charlie Company
May 31, 1968
Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Ross with responsibility for keep Road open. At 1130hrs Road from LZ Baldy to LZ Ross is reported open by 1-20 Infantry. Charlie Company completes Road sweep and security mission and then moves west from LZ Ross to vicinity AT9834. At 1055hrs Charlie Company at BT014515 received 35 rounds, small arms and automatic weapon fire from west at 500 meters returned fire with small arms fire, 81mm Mortar, Artillery and also 1 US WIA (E).At 1537hrs Charlie Company at BT005334 received 6 rounds automatic weapons fire along with 30 rounds of small arms fire calling artillery still receiving fire, no casualties. After firing artillery firing stopped. Charlie Company reports their Night Defense Position at BT001347.
Delta Company
May 31, 1968
Delta Company had a Patrol and Night Ambush out and at 0351hrs observed and engaged with small arms fire and results 1 VC KIA. Delta moves to LZ Ross and takes over the Security Mission for LZ Ross. At 0751hrs Delta Company at AT974354 observed 2 VC with packs and weapons 100 to 180 meters south of their location engaged with small arms fire with results 1 KIA with 1 AK47 (loaded), 1 US Canteen 1 pack (medical kit, rice and clothing) 2 pack (in pack 3plastic sheets, 3 bags of candy, 3 green uniforms, 1 bar US soap, 1 scrub bush, 1 surgical kit, 1 can of milk, and 1 quart fish heads) CIA. and at 1212hrs Delta Company observed 1 VC engaged with small arms fire with results of 1 VC KIA found a tunnel at AT990351 that is 65’ long and had 3 entrances, 3’ X4’ found inside 1 VC was engaged with small arms fire results is 1 VC KIA. At 1420hrs Delta Company at AT010340 just outside of LZ Ross as Delta Company was going to take over the Security Mission for LZ Ross. Delta Company just moving into LZ Ross tripped a booby trap in hedgerow with results in 2 US WHA (E). Delta Company reports PFC Allen B. Corneliusen and SGT John J. Henthorne where evac with fragmentation wounds to NSA Hospital DA Nang and where awarded Purple Hearts.
Echo Company
May 31, 1968
Echo Company is located at LZ Ross where Battalion Forward, is located and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and the Base Defense on LZ Ross. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Ross where they continue to provide direct fire support for the Battalion. 1-20 Infantry Recon Platoon manned OP Tiger, Cobra and Dragon. Echo Company reports SP4 Charles Robinson sick evac to 6th Support Hospital at 1400hrs.
