Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. The 1-20 Infantry TOC SGT Oviatt, has informed Brigade Dust Off for 10 PF to LZ Bronco at 0040hrs will send a read out as soon as he can get one. Follow up had 3 hand frag grenades in Refugee Camp Nu Vong Cause unknown total 8 PSDF WIA and 1 Vietnamese Civilian KIA. At 0859hrs 1-20 Infantry 3 RF were WIA and 1 PF KIA results of ambush. At 1115hrs UPDATE on Ambush, PF Unit at BS699534, while en route from Mo Duc to OP PAX at BS693538 on road from Mo Duc heading southwest past OP Pax was ambushed by unknown size force at 30 meters. A patrol from the 1st Platoon Charlie Company went to the location and found 3 PF WIA and 3 PF KIA, requested Urgent Dust Off and completed at 0910hrs to LZ Bronco. The patrol swept contact area and found 2 M-16 destroyed and 2 foxholes 2’ in diameter and 3’ deep under pile of straw, found evidence of command detonated claymore. Also found 1 DUD Chi Com hand/frag, 2 AK 47 magazines, Hand Frag all was destroyed except AK 47 magazines and destroy M-16 they will be evac to LZ Liz. MACV Mo Duc 143 RF Company patrol observed 3 VC running into the tree line and engaged with M-72 and small arms fire with unknown results.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0050hrs Base Defense SGT Daniels reports that Bunker 16 reported an individual was firing a M-16 from the Bunker line into the Ville at Duc Pho. Military Police investigated with negative results.
Alpha Company

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission on LZ Liz along with Road Security vicinity BS760435 to BS776435.
Bravo Company
January 31, 1971
At 0925hrs Bravo Company while moving to their patrol base found at BS662578, 1Vietnamese female dead. She had 3 bullet holes in her chest had been dead approximately 2 months wearing purple top and no bottoms, 25 to 30 years old. The platoon element is questioning villages at this time. At 0955hrs Bravo Company on patrol hit a booby trap at BS681582, results 2 US WHA, Booby trap was a Chi Com grenade with trip wire across trail approximately 2" above the ground. The area of the Booby trip looked like possible sleeping positions. Dust Off was requested and completed at 1005hrs to LZ Bronco. At 1250hrs Bravo Company at BS837295 while LOH was lifting up from an LZ with the 1-20 Infantry Commander and S-3 received sniper fire from 500 meters of their location, with negative hits or casualties. Bravo Company continued their multiple ambushes and some patrolling. Bravo Company then moved into their Night Defense Position at BS685575. Bravo Company reports the following PFC David J. Benedict Frag wounds all exterminates and PFC Randolph P. Rust Multiple frag wounds both legs, left arm and Hip where evac to the 91st Evac Hospital.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company continued to work with multiple ambushes and multiple patrols in their Area of Operation. At 0859hrs 1-20 Infantry 3 RF were WIA and 1 PF KIA results of ambush. At 1115hrs UPDATE on Ambush, PF Unit at BS699534, while en route from Mo Duc to OP PAX at BS693538 on road from Mo Duc heading southwest past OP Pax was ambushed by unknown size force at 30 meters. Delta Company

Action in the Area of Operation was light. At 0925hrs Delta Company while on patrol at BS755589 detained 16 and 17 years old males admitted to being VC (admission to Kit Carson Scouts). 1 was dressed in Black and I in blue top with black bottom, they where picked up while fishing and observing the element as they passed. At 1135hrs 1 of detainee stated he knew 50 VC from C-19 meets every night at 1800hrs (grid BS757596) the 1-20 Infantry and RF will conduct combined operation. At 1305hrs Delta Company at BS711434 VIP program bought 1 4.2 WP round (lot W 61-3-55) received from Vietnamese male 12 years old, paid 1 can C Rations and 4.2 round was destroyed. Delta Company 1st Platoon ambush on 3-4 VC/NVA, requested ILL, and checked the area found some trails picked up 3 Vietnamese children, which they released, and set up their Night Defense Position.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0800hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS695600. At 1200hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at LZ Liz.
