Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0325hrs LZ Liz Radar sighted 4 to 5 personnel, moving southwest at grid BS767491 and we engaged the target with 4 HE of Artillery 105. At 0905hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 14 spotted 2 VC/NVA, wearing blue uniforms at grid BS818404, we engaged with M60 and the VC/NVA evaded to the tree line near the river. At 1015hrs 26th Engineer we found 1 40 pound pressure type mine at grid BS775444 (about 300 meters from the junction of the access road and Highway 1) in the middle of the road. At 1045hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Dolphin 28 at grid BS755386, spotted 5 people, 2 males and 3 females, wearing black pajamas. Helix 34 is checking out the area and found 13 people herding cattle to the east. At 1100hrs 26th Engineer 1 of our vehicles (Pan) hit a mine on the access road at BS744443 with negative casualties. We estimate the size of the mine to be 40 pounds of composition B, pressure type. The damage to the vehicle was a middle wheel broken off, the windshield broken and a portion of the blade was blown off, this was 100 meters west of the mine found earlier. At 1105hrs Helix (FAC) at grid BS754398 Helix 34 spotted several people moving to the southeast along a trail. The people are carrying rice and hay and Helix has moved them to the east. At 1200hrs Helix 34 we are putting in an Air Strike at grids BS801460 and BS798479 and the Bomb Damage Assessment was 3 sustained fires. At 1225hrs Brigade wants an Area of Operation for E Troop with 1 platoon of 1-20 Infantry OPCON to them will go into effect DATE/TIME 020600 to 031800 February 1970. The Area of Operation will be from vicinity of the river at the Brigade Area of Operation on the north side of the river and north to the Mo Duc Road, we will get a detailed overlay today. At 1440hrs 1-20 Infantry the Division Commander arrived at LZ Liz was briefed and left at 1450hrs. At 1517hrs 1-20 Infantry the Battalion Commander left LZ Liz for Bravo Company and returned at 1700hrs. At 1700hrs Warlord Lead at 1715hrs Warlord picked up 2 male detainees at grid BS794477. One of the males had an ID and the other did not, Warlord took the 2 detainees to the southeast pad. At 1756hrs Warlord Lead at grid BS827438 we saw 3 steel pots, 1 poncho, both of which were destroyed at grid BS818447. At grid BS795490 we found 1 camouflaged hootch, mounds of dirt around the hootch and air holes on each side with smoke coming out of the holes. We threw in a C/S grenade with negative results and Warlord broke station. At 2030hrs Radar sighted 2 to 3 personnel, stationary, at grid BS768447 and we engaged them with 9 HE from the 4.2 mortar. At 2145hrs IOS sighted 4-5 flashing lights at gird BS748422, we engaged with 5 HE of 81 mortar. At 2315hrs Radar sighted 4 to 5 stationary personnel at grid BS776472 we engaged the target with 20 HE of Artillery 105.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 2107hrs 1-20 Infantry all units are informed that baseball type
Alpha Company

At 0705hrs Alpha Company all snakes have closed on BS736443. At 0740hrs Alpha Company our new Day Logger will be at BS735414. At 1030hrs Alpha Company 61 is moving to BS725431 and their Day Logger at BS736446. At 1124hrs Alpha Company the 63 element reach grid BS725461 with negative results. Alpha sweeps in the area this morning product negative results. There will be 9 snakes out in position tonight.
Bravo Company

At 0555hrs Bravo Company 63 element if moving to BS808415 and the 97 element has closed on BS771461 and the 57 snake closed on BS783433. At 0650hrs Bravo Company the 97 element with the PF will move on a patrol to BS804475 at 0700hrs and at 0810hrs is moving. At 0817hrs Bravo Company all snakes have closed on their semi-permanent positions. At 0901hrs Bravo Company the 96 element will provide security for paving. At 0925hrs Bravo Company the 65 element reports that 2 VC went into a Ville at BS787426 and buried 2 hootches. The 65 element questioned 1 Vietnamese male, about 15 years of age concerning the incident. At 0945hrs Bravo Company will conduct a Combat Assault of the Ranger element and 56 elements to BS818404 1st PZ 0955hrs and last LZ at 1015hrs. At 1040hrs Bravo Company the 56 element found a bunker at BS818401. In the bunker we found one M-1 Carbine, and M-2 carbine, one green uniform and one pistol belt with a first aid pack. At 1120hrs Bravo Company 56 element has one VC that was evac Dust Off to Doc Control by Dolphin 14 with a concussion. At 1210hrs Bravo Company 63 element picked up one VC female at grid BS807409, she was 21 years old, with no ID, and is a Woman Association leader. She was evading from the 63 element to Duc Pho, we will send her in to MACV. At 1500hrs Bravo Company we requested an Urgent Dust Off for enemy Vietnamese female who hit a booby trap of an unknown type at grid BS790380 we also have one Vietnamese child WIA. At 1530hrs Bravo Company Late Report the 53 element destroyed a tunnel with an under water entrance at BS818404. The tunnel is 15’ long and 3’ high and 3’ wide. We found one VC KIA in the tunnel. At 1820hrs Bravo Company the 98 element spotted 4 personnel west of the Twin Ville at BS776446. We checked out the area with negative findings. At 1840hrs Bravo Company the 95 element is moving out of their clearing patrol to BS772437, BS765430 and BS780439. The 58 element is moving to BS781437. At 1845hrs Bravo Company we request an Urgent Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese female with a M16 wound in her left leg. We brought her to BS776446 and it is unknown how she received the wound completed at 1900hrs.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company is on LZ Liz and taken over the Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0900hrs Charlie Company all snakes have closed on LZ Liz.
Delta Company
January 31, 1970
At 0725hrs Delta Company reports all snakes have closed on BS736443. At 1225hrs 1-20 Infantry Delta Company instructions was to set up ambushes in a single line BS722416 to BS745385. At 1706hrs Delta Company we are moving to our Night Defense Position at BS739406. At 1735hrs Delta Company while moving to our Night Defense Position we found a tunnel 2 ½ ‘feet in diameter and 5 to 6’ long. We believe it to be used for observation and if fired on to be used to retreat back into we are blowing it at this time grid BS719410. At 1900hrs 54 engaged one VC at grid BS736406, result I VC KIA with a US pistol Belt and 2 pineapple grenades he had empty rucksack and wore a light blue uniform. The VC appeared to be a little over weight. Delta Company has moved into their Night Defense Position was in the vicinity of BS739406.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0610hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Observed Mission 1 and defense Target 3 for a total expended of 26 HE, 5 WP and 1 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0505hrs Recon the Little John element spotted 13 VC/NVA at grid BS778398, we are calling in 4.2 Mortar. We will check out the area at first light. At 0842hrs Recon Little Al has closed on BS772405 with negative results. At 0945hrs Recon Platoon our present location is at BS775413. At 1121hrs Recon we have closed on LZ Liz.
