Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters reports their located is at LZ Vanguard and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0002hrs Inferno Blue (Bravo 123 Aviation) checking Nighthawk box 54 and at 0038hrs checking LZ Bronco and LZ Snoopy perimeters and then breaking station at 0049hrs. At 0030hrs 1-20 Infantry CH 47 lift for Bravo Company to Chu Lai approved for 1100hrs. At 0830hrs AMC Hornet 39 tail # 778 is on station for Combat Assault of Bravo Company with 1st PZ 0915hrs and 1st LZ at 1825hrs, 2nd PZ at 0937hrs and 2nd LZ at 0945hrs Combat Assault is completed and broke station at 0950hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 59, 2nd Platoon 56, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 97and CO-29.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.
Alpha Company
August 31, 1971
Alpha Company continued with their Security Mission for LZ Vanguard. At 0910hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon moving out to BS574434 and at 1230hrs Alpha Company patrol at BS567433 while on patrol found 4 hooch’s and 5 tunnels. The hooch’s consisted of mud walls and lean to the roofs. They were capable of sleeping 4 to 5 people each. The tunnels were approximately 8’ long and 4’ high. Of the tunnels were in the vicinity of the hooch’s and the 5th tunnel was approximately 50 meters to the north by a stream it was determined that they had been used 3 to 4 days ago. This was determined by the domestic animals dropping that where found in the area. The 4 hooch’s were old and everything seemed to be well used each hooch had misc. items of NVA equipment and tools. Alpha Company returned to LZ Vanguard. At 0030hrs CH 47 Lift for Bravo Company approved for 1100hrs. At 0800hrs Bravo Company is at BS626448, the 2 NVA that hit the Mechanical Ambush, Bravo Company found their Camp Site in a Banana Grove. Bravo Company

At 0030hrs CH 47 Lift for Bravo Company approved for 1100hrs. At 0800hrs Bravo Company is at BS626448, the 2 NVA that hit the Mechanical Ambush, Bravo Company found their Camp Site in a Banana Grove. Also found a stone wall about 3’ tall and 50’ long looked like it had been used by about 6 people. Bravo Company has the Security Mission for LZ Vanguard.
Charlie Company
August 31, 1971
At 0930hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon is moving to BS642452 and set up an ambush at BS645455 and patrol closed on BS642452 at BS1030hrs. At 1300hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon closed on BS636448 set up a ambush. The 2nd Platoon at 1325hrs is moving to BS631445. At 1904hrs Charlie Company at 637449 requested Urgent Dust Off for head exhaustion Line # 389, Dust Off completed at 1935hrs by Dust Off #59. At 2010hrs Charlie Company has closed on their Night Defense Position at BS634451. SGT Earl E. Shirley was attached to 91st Evac Hospital.
Delta Company
August 31, 1971
At 1215hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon Patrol is at BS574439. At 1115hrs Brigade requested a Air Lift for Alpha Company, Charlie Company and Delta Company from LZ Vanguard to LZ Custer open at BS512573. At 1545hrs Delta Company has closed back on LZ Vanguard.
Echo Company
August 31, 1971
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Vanguard, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1600hrs Recon Platoon is moving out to BS624467. At 2020hrs Recon reports they are in their Night Defense Position at BS636448.
