Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 30, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0030hrs LZ Bronco 6 C-130 departed LZ Bronco with 87 personnel for the Air Move to the 4-3 Infantry Battalion. At 0110hrs LT Jones (SOIC) confirmed that there was an explosion on the Tra Khuc Bridge, will check with Quang Ngai COIC and 3-1 Infantry at Son Tinh. At 2315hrs Delta 1-1 Calvary has broken station and reports 1 hootch destroyed at BS682419 also spotted 1 VC by campfire at BS655515.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1645hrs CPT Mac Leod notified Base Defense that Vietnamese in the wire near and around Artillery Hill.

 

Alpha Company
January 30, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission on LZ Liz along with Road Security vicinity BS760435 to BS776435. At 0930hrs Alpha Company at BS733444, reference to Alpha Company scout who earlier was reported kidnapped by VC info by people Duc My village indicate missing scout was KIA on or about January 28, 1971. Alpha Company 2nd Platoon will send patrol to verify and report negative finding. At 2051hrs 2nd Platoon at BS759459 while on patrol looking for missing scout found signs in Village will evac to Duc Pho in morning.

 

Bravo Company
January 30, 1971

Bravo Company continued to operate from BS682582 and conduct multiple patrols and multiple Day and Night ambushes in their Area of Operation. Bravo Company Day Ambushes locations BS685588, BS682586, BS683576, BS671580, BS669580, BS686578 and BS687576 and conducts patrols in Upper Left BS6558 and Lower Right BS6853. At 1350hrs Bravo Company hit Booby Trap at BS683417, the Bobby Trap made of Petna with trip wire across trail 2 US with wounds too both legs, arms, and face possible lost of both legs and other man has wounds to the chest. Bravo Company then moved into their Night Defense Position at BS685587. Bravo Company reports the following PFC Barry C. Broenen Multiple frag wounds both legs arms face, PFC Howard C. Getter Multiple frag wounds Upper chest from booby trap and SP4 Alton Laurence with gun shot wound right foot M-16 discharge where evac to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Charlie Company
January 30, 1971

At 0326hrs Charlie Company at BS699563 had a Mechanical Ambush detonate will check area at first light with negative finding. Charlie Company continued to work with multiple ambushes and multiple patrols in their Area of Operation and Charlie Company working with RF units with joint operations and working on OP at BS699562. Charlie Company set up their Night Defense Position at BS699562. At 2045hrs Charlie Company observed an explosion believed to be booby trap detonated and engaged area with 81mm mortars and HE rounds Artillery 105mm.

 

Delta Company
January 30, 1971

Delta Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS768566 while on a morning patrol made contact with a VC carrying party. Engaged with small arms fire and assaulted, the enemy returned fire then evaded east. The patrol while assaulting crossed a large stream losing 3 weapons, continued the assault results 4 KIA NVA/VC, MIA 3 M-16, Captured 4 chi com and 6 M-26 hand grenades, 17 pounds of polished rice, 2 males 25 years of age and green bottoms, 1 wearing all green, and the unit still searching for missing weapons. At 2201hrs Delta Company reports the Platoon was they chasing 3 VC across a sweep flowing river when they lost their weapons and still searching for the weapons.

 

Echo Company
January 30, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1205hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS695600.
