Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 30, 1971
Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Vanguard and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 1756hrs 1-20 Infantry Convoy requests, Depart Snoopy at 0900hrs going to Bronco and back to Snoopy, Vehicles 4 with 6 packs with LT Baldock in command. At 2255hrs Alpha Company Bunker spotted 2 lights at BS5481451 that seems to be moving to the east. Engaged with 81mm mortars with 14 HE rounds when first round impacted lights went out, had end of mission 2237hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 59, 2nd Platoon 56, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 97 and CO-29.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.
Alpha Company
August 30, 1971
Alpha Company continued with their Security Mission for LZ Vanguard. At 0725hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon on patrol and by 0950hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon closed back on LZ Vanguard as their sweep the area of contact last night with negative results. At 2155hrs Alpha Company spotted 2 lights at BS581451 seemed to be moving to the east engaged with 81mm when first round impacted lights went out and end fire mission at 2257hrs, 14 81mm HE rounds with results unknown.
Bravo Company
August 30, 1971
At 0915hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 2nd Platoon is moving to BS627452. At 1545hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon moved out to BS654400 and 2nd Platoon has moved out to BS657391. At 1855hrs Bravo Company is moving to Night Defense Position at BS631453. At 1940hrs Bravo Company at BS637434 had a Mechanical Ambush go off at their Patrol Base element going back to check it out, with results 2 NVA KIA wearing green on green. Individuals were believed to be on scrounging mission negative pack or weapons both were very young. At 2028hrs Bravo Company has moved into their Night Defense Position with 2nd Platoon ambush at BS625428.
Charlie Company
August 30, 1971
At 0815hrs Charlie Company is moving to Patrol Base at BS638442. At 0830hrs Charlie Company at BS623433 spotted six personnel in water washing clothes, dressed in black and black called in Artillery Fire Mission negative results. Delta Company was told that they would pick up a Dog team around 0900hrs to 1000hrs a EOD team to blow 8" round. At 0930hrs LATE SPOT time of event 0830hrs Charlie Company at BS641432 Dog Handler tripped a booby trap, results were 3 WHA, 1 scout dog KIA. The scout dog alerted twice the handler forced the dog into the area, booby trap was a fine cord hooked onto a grenade, Dust Off was completed at 0853hrs. Charlie Company at 0940hrs moving to Patrol Base at BS939442 and at 0950hrs Charlie Company is at BS641432 found 82mm booby trap approximately 2 months old 82mm was already disarmed, blew it in place. At 1750hrs Charlie Company is moving to Night Defense Position at BS637447 and closed at 2004hrs. At 1940hrs Mechanical ambush detonated with results 2 NVA KIA, with negative finding. SP4 Charles Peters was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.
Delta Company
August 30, 1971
Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Vanguard. At 0910hrs Delta Company had the 2nd Platoon moving out to BS586420 and at 1200hrs closed back on LZ Vanguard. Delta Company
Echo Company
August 30. 1971
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Vanguard, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion Also watching the pressure about her. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
