Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0101hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line, Inspection conducted with only minor discrepancies. Rifle Company satisfactory with only minor discrepancies, Charlie Battery Artillery, not all knew challenge and password. Charlie Battery 1-82 Artillery not all knew the challenge and the pass word. All troops had required equipment and were alert Quad 50 checked also. At 0307hrs MACV Mo Duc reports PF 276 in contact with estimate Company size VC element at grid BS742674, received incoming 82mm mortars and under ground attack. Requesting Nighthawk, Saber Black and Dolphin 30 is on station at 0337hrs requested a Urgent Dust Off at 0425hrs for 3 PF with gunshot wounds. Dust Off was not completed because PF wouldn’t come out of OP. Saber confirmed 4 KIA for ground and 1 KIA for Saber Black, Saber black broke station at 0505hrs. At 0430hrs MACV Mo Duc at BS747676 requested Urgent Dust Off for 8 PF with gunshot rounds to the body caused by small arms fire, Dust Off broke station at 0455hrs until 1st Light. PF won’t come out of OP. Re Requested Dust Off at 0628hrs 6 PF, 3 Urgent and 3 Priority, cancelled Dust Off 0635hrs. Dolphin 30 picking up WIA to Quang Ngai, Bird W88 picked up 1st 3 at 0630hrs Dust Off completed taken to Quang Ngai by vehicle. At 0828hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 6 is on station at this time. At 0830hrs LZ Liz Access Road is now open. At 0915hrs MACV Mo Duc PF 276 at 0245hrs VC launched a mortar and ground attack into Ky Tan OP grid 748675 and into the Refugee Camp grid BS747672. They received approximately 20 rounds of 82mm and 40 rounds B 40. Results Friendly 4 PF KIA, 4 PF WIA and 3 RDC KIA, (weapons lost) 3 M-16 100% damage, 1 M-79 50% damage. The Outpost received 70% damage. Enemy results 8 VC KIA, weapons captured 1 AK 47, 1 B-40 and rocket launcher and 25 home made grenades. At 0937hrs MACV MO Duc at BS770463 Booby Trap mine on highway 1, 1 175mm round and 1 155mm round wired together with electrical blasting cap, command detonated removed by Mo Duc MACV. At 0945hrs 1-20 Infantry TO Charlie Company from S-3 send 1 element to BS721429 location is closer proximity to Prize. LOH will bring Vietnamese Pax to continue search for Prize, ETA for LOH is 1000hrs, Prize is spider hoes and enemy positions. At 1316hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 18 is on station for re supply. At 1210hrs 1-20 Infantry Helix 36 is on station at this time and broke station at 1233hrs. At 1622hrs Primo 6 is on station at this time. At 1628hrs Helix 01 is on station at this time. At 2250hrs LZ Liz at 1930hrs LT Lewis inspected bunker line, all points OK, check 155 bunker line. Legend: 1st Platoon 51, 2nd Platoon 26, 3rd Platoon 13, 4th Platoon 17, CO-66.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
April 30, 1971
Alpha Company is using patrols and Day Ambush in their Area of Operation. At 0651hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon is moving to Patrol Base and 2nd platoon ambush closed from BS689520. At 0946hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon while on patrol found an NVA Base Camp vicinity grid BS674503, found 19 (2 man) fighting position, 2 command bunkers 12’ to 15’ long, 4’ to 5’ High, and 3’ to 4’ thick overhead cover. There have been approximately 50 personnel using the camp in the last 48 hours. Also found 1 rice crusher, C-Ration cans and cooking utensils. About 50 meter to the south of location was an OP. The bunkers, which will be destroyed this afternoon along with anything else we can find. At 0947hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon while picking up their Mechanical Ambush found 1 man fighting position, was concealed by rocks around it, was on side of the trail and was destroyed. At 1052hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon Patrol at checkpoint 4 set up day light ambush. At 1507hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon spotted 4 VC/NVA with packs and weapons at BS652503 and called in a Fire Mission engaged with 81mm results of grid BS659504 4 VC/NVA KBA. Primo 6 and Helix 01 on station both expended their fire, and both stations negative finding. At 1745hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon has Day Light Ambush at BS689525. At 2012hrs Alpha Company all in position Command Post 2nd 4th Platoon at BS679525, 2nd Platoon Ambush BS673517, 3rd Platoon at BS666532, and 1st Platoon at BS674501.
Bravo Company

Bravo Company continued with their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0101hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line, Inspection conducted with only minor discrepancies. At 0723hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon is on the move to vicinity BS723443. At 0837hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon in their Patrol Base at BS723443. At 0908hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon moving out with detainee to check out area vicinity BS724436 and at 0945hrs To Charlie Company by S-3 send one element vicinity BS721429 location the closest proximity to Prize. LOH will bring Vietnamese Pack to continue search for Prize. ETA of LOH will be 1000hrs, Prize is spider hole and enemy positions. At 1000hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon is moving out for BS711414. At 1018hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol closed on BS723426. At 1915hrs 3rd Platoon heard Mechanical Ambush dentate at BS720416, checked area with negative finding.
Delta Company

At 0621hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon sending out element to check out Mechanical Ambush at BS710504, checked area with negative findings, Mechanical Ambush at BS710504, checked area with negative findings, Mechanical Ambush had detonated at 2335hrs. At 0631hrs Delta Company 4th Platoon and 1st Platoon on move to Patrol Base with 1st Platoon Patrol picking up Mechanical Ambush and heading to Patrol Base, at vicinity BS720494. At 0700hrs Delta Company Command Post and 2nd Platoon is moving to Patrol Base at BS717466, 1st and 4th Platoons in Patrol Base at BS720494 and 2nd Platoon Day Ambush closed from BS728477. At 1030hrs Delta Company changed Command Post and 2nd Platoon Patrol Base at BS712477. At 1825hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon patrol has closed on BS697506, all patrols have closed for the Day. At 1940hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon and 4th Platoon while moving to Night Defense Position at vicinity BS721485 engaged UNSEF 25-75 meters to their west requested Illumination and Nighthawk. At 2025 1st Platoon has 1 VC/NVA KIA wearing green, captured 1 pair of wire cutters, various documents, and 2 maps, will continue to sweep area, have heard voices proximity 100 meters and sounds as though personnel are waiting to Chieu Hoi. At 2031hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon continuing to sweep and have received small arms fire. Have called out to enemy but received negative answer and engaged area. At 2050hrs 1st platoon believes they heard VC/NVA setting up mortar tube and have requested nighthawk again. At 2145hrs 1st Platoon still hearing voices 100 meters to the northwest, requests for gun cancelled at 2215hrs, at 2230hrs 1st platoon moving to sweep the area. The following items where found 1 B-40 Rocket, pick up blood trail, 1 rucksack, 3more KIA and 160mm rocket a total of 4 KIA (3male, 1 female) all wearing black and green clothing. DIA-B-40 rocket and 60mm unknown type destroyed, Rucksacks 4, with cooking utensils, documents, 2-3 maps. Have requested LOH at light and a tracker team, cancelled Dog Request. At 2300hrs Delta Company 1st and 4th Platoon BS721499, Command Post and 2nd Platoon will remain at BS711477. PFC Percy Stewart JR. was attached to the 27th Surgical Hospital.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0706hrs Recon is in their Patrol Base vicinity BS744395. At 1009hrs Recon is moving to preplanned position vicinity BS745387 and vicinity BS743390. At 1955hrs Recon in Night Defense Position at BS745386.
