Headquarters and Headquarter Company
July 2, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0530hrs TMF at 0515hrs String 74, target B, was activated by 4 personnel that where moving west to east at 2 miles per hour with metal confirmed, engaged with 8 VT rounds of Artillery 105mm shot at 0525hrs. At 0840hrs Charlie Company 54 with the Charlie Company 26 Engineer found 2 M-16 ammo cans full of documents at the work location at BS735605. At 1043hrs 1-20 Infantry we request an Area of Operation extension in the Date/Time/Grid 011200 to 011800 July 1970 from BS734560 and west to BS703560 North along the railroad berm to the present boundary. The purpose is for Bravo Company and Recon Platoon to react to intelligence. At 1700hrs Brigade the 4 Regiment requests an Area of Operation extension in the Date/Time/grid of 032000 to 040600 in the area BS824460 to BS833400 to BS800460 to BS800400 for the purpose of ARVN Marines practice operations it was approved by LTC Fischer. At 1745hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer the total hours worked in 24 hours with 62 acres cleared in the area BS732601 to BS732606 to BS729607 to BS728601 with 3 bunkers destroyed and 1 6" naval round destroyed. 3 D7 are operational with 2 dead line with damage bell pans and one is overheating.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 2045hrs S-4 informed Bravo Company the regular re supply of (hot A) rations will be from the Bud Pad and the regular re supply of all other items will be run from LZ Snoopy. Headquarters and Headquarter Company reports SP4 Larry Melhorn Medic to 91 Evac Frag wounds to left hand (see Echo Company July 2, 1970).

 

Alpha Company
July 2, 1970

Alpha Company established their Night Defense Position at BS501400 and conducts Day and Night Ambushes with Mechanical ambushes and Conduct some Search and Clear Operations in their Area of Operation. At 1245hrs Alpha Company at BS503414 with enemy at BS499404 received 40 to 50 rounds of small arms fire from 2-3 enemy locations with results negative casualties or damage, engaged with Artillery with negative results. Alpha Company reports Night Defense Location at BS501418.

 

Bravo Company
July 2, 1970

Bravo Company continued their joint Operations with PF and RF units on their Hamlet Pacification and security of Highway 1. At 0709hrs Bravo Company the 16 element has closed, the 56 element has closed on yesterday Day Logger and the 18 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS719618. At 0754hrs Bravo Company the 38 element is moving back, the 16 element is in the Day Logger at BS698615 and the 18 element has closed. At 1230hrs Bravo Company the 34 element is moving out and the element is to link with the 34 element and will move to BS698572 to BS698583. At 2018hrs Bravo Company the 58 element is at BS735635, the 56 is at BS741645. At 2043hrs Bravo Company the 38 element is at BS717606. At 2045hrs Bravo Company the regular resupply of (hot A rations) will be from the Bud Pad and the regular resupply of all other items will be run from LZ Snoopy.

 

Charlie Company
July 2, 1970

At 0722hrs Charlie Company the 16 and 17 elements have closed on BS798443 and the 35 and 36 elements have closed on 34 elements location at BS814425. At 0840hrs Charlie Company 54 with the Charlie Company 26 Engineer found 2 M-16 ammo cans full of documents at the work location at BS735605. There was a blue turtle neck sweater in one of the boxes. They were evac to LZ Liz and Charlie Company 54, have 11 detainees with no ID at BS735605 and after questioning, extracted all to MACV Mo Duc. At 2000hrs Charlie Company moved into their Night Defense Position with multiply ambushes are in their location.

 

Delta Company
July 2, 1970

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and Access Road.

 

Echo Company
July 2, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Fire 9 for a total expended of 78 HE, 24 Illumination and 30 C/S rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0643hrs Recon Platoon we are moving out on our patrol. At 0740hrs Recon Platoon the 22 element spotted and engaged 2 VC dressed in blue uniforms at BS752556. The personnel were moving north at approximately 45 meters. The results are 2 VC KIA, 2 Chi Com grenades CIA and documents CIA. At 1321hrs Recon all LZ’s are complete at BS701573, BS704574, BS711568 and BS712573. At 1330hrs Recon Platoon on Eagle Flight the 21 element tripped 3 booby traps, 1 60mm mortar round at BS75573 and 2 M-26 hand grenades at BS709571 with unknown type firing devices (reported late to be connected by trip wire). We request an Urgent Dust Off for 6 US with multiple frag wounds. Names: Olingea, E5, 23-0, Helton E4, 44-H, Radke, E4, 59-R, Webster, E4, 27W, 1LT Wiley and the medic Melhorn. Also 2 US received minor frag wounds and did not require Dust Off Completed at 1341hrs, (M) WIA SP4 Jeff Pratt Treated and Released from B 23 Medical and SP4 James C. King treated and released in field frag wound left shoulder at BS709571. 2 VC were spotted with packs and were engaged at 75 meters and evaded to the southwest with unknown results. Echo Company reports 1LT Charles R. Wiley was treated and released by Bravo 23 Medical with frag wounds to back, SGT JAMES E. OLINGER JR (see July 3, 1970) evac to 91 Evac Trans amp both legs, SP4 Larry Melhorn Medic to 91 Evac Frag wounds to left hand, CPL James R. Helton to 91 Evac with multiple frag wounds to back, and SP4 Allan P. Radke where evac to 91st Evac frag wounds left leg. SP4 FRANK A. WEBSTER IS LISTED AS KIA (GRP Chu Lai COD missile wound to Head). Recon closed on LZ Liz and continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
