Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0811hrs the Division Chaplain arrived at LZ Liz and was briefed by the Battalion Commander, he left at 0835hrs. At 0955hrs 1-20 Infantry Battalion Commander and the Division Finance Officer went to Alpha and Charlie Company and returned at 1210hrs. At 1400hrs 1-20 Infantry the Battalion Commander and Division Finance Officer left LZ Liz for Bravo Company and returned to LZ Liz at 1555hrs. At 1425hrs The Assistance Division Commander arrived at LZ Liz and was briefed by the S-3. He departed LZ Liz and went to Bravo Company at 1438hrs and departed at 1450hrs. At 1935hrs Brigade LRRP Idaho 34, Beach nut will be at BS6736, BS7236, BS7233 and BS6733 on 031200 January 1970 with Mission is to make an area Reconnaissance.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
January 2, 1970
At 0726hrs Alpha Company all our elements have closed on grid BS798484. At 0810hrs Alpha Company to 1-20 Infantry the 4 corners of the fishing village are BS822463, BS827453, BS816446 and BS812456. At 0840hrs Alpha Company Urgent Dust Off, Requested, one US who hit a booby trap hand frag which was attached to a trip wire. He has multiple frag wounds in the left leg, Name PFC David K. Patterson Dust Off complete at 0903hrs (grid BS798490). At 0955hrs 1-20 Infantry Battalion Commander and Division Finance Officer went to Alpha Company and Charlie Company and returned at 1210hrs. At 1133hrs Alpha Company my 04 and 05 elements have closed on BS783433. At 1630hrs Alpha Company reports we did not receive Hot A’s due to the tactical situation. At 1910hrs we are at our Night Defense Position at BS801450. At 2130hrs Alpha Company 44 element is location at BS814464 and at 2145hrs the 24 element is at BS823446 and the 04 element is at BS809450.
Bravo Company
January 2, 1970
At 0605hrs Bravo Company the 09 element is moving out to BS779459. At 0645hrs Bravo Company the 48 element is moving to BS795437 and at 0700hrs the 28 element is moving to BS785450. At 0705hrs Bravo Company the Rangers are moving out on their patrol to BS805423 (1), BS813412 (2), BS817405 (3), BS808412 (4), and BS797415 (5). At 0730hrs Bravo Company all snakes have closed the 06 on BS771461, 25 on BS787424, 26 on BS789417 and the 47 on BS783433. At 0930hrs Bravo Company 48 element a grid BS786436 found a dud 105 round with explosives removed we blew in place, the explosives were intact. At 1020hrs Bravo Company 26 elements in moving to secure the bulldozer. Bravo Company with 147 RF took up their blocking position. At 1425hrs the Assistant Division Commander departed LZ Liz and went to Bravo Company at 1450hrs. At 1600hrs Bravo Company the 28 snakes with the 28 PF to grid BS799377 and the PF snake is at BS801383. At 1820hrs Bravo Company we notified of the locations of Alpha and Charlie Company locations for tonight and tomorrow operations. At 1845hrs Bravo Company the Gorilla element is moving to BS786731. At 1850hrs Bravo Company the 12 Vietnamese harvested from the church to the 80 grid line. At 1855hrs Bravo Company the 25 element has a blocking position at BS814415 at 0400hrs, the Gorilla blocking fore is at BS814414 at 0300hrs. The Rangers will be at BS818440, the 147 RF and the 24 sub element will be at grid BS799413 at 0500hrs and will sweep to BS817405, the 169 PF elements and the 28 element is a blocking force at trail BS817409 to BS818485. At 2025hrs Bravo Company Gun Ships are on station at 2025hrs and broke station at 2245hrs. At 2050hrs Bravo 04 spotted some flashing lights about 300 meters to the north of grid BS776446. They seemed to be signaling to someone. Then the 06 element received small arms fire and 1 possible mortar round from grid BS772458 (enemy grid). The 04 element returned fire, Gun Ships are on station and worked over the area, with negative results and negative casualties, Bravo Company, is calling in artillery at this time. At 2050hrs the 04 element spotted some flashing lights about 300 meters to the north of grid BS776446. They seemed to be signaling to someone. Then 06 received small arms fire and on possible mortar round from grid BS775455. Gun ships are on station and worked over the two areas, negative casualties. Bravo Company is calling in Artillery at this time. At 2055hrs Bravo Company we request clearance to fire 81mm mortar on grid BS783450. At 2110hrs Bravo Company the Gorilla element is at BS786431, the 05 element is at BS770451, the 26 element is at BS798409, the 25 element is at BS790420 and the 28 element is at BS801383. At 2245hrs Bravo Company the 05 element is moving to their new location at BS768448.
Charlie Company

At 0729hrs Charlie Company the 28 element has closed on grid BS735450. At 0835hrs Charlie Company the 07 element has closed on Liz. At 0847hrs Charlie Company requested an Urgent Dust Off requested for 5 personnel from the 26th Engineer who hit a mine (between 25 and 50 pounds) made of composition B, Dust Off is completed at 0900hrs. At 0915hrs Charlie Company the 21 element is moving out of our perimeter. At 1255hrs Charlie Company our Night Defense Position will be at BS726447, the 06 snake is at BS725452 and 26 snake is at BS722449. At 1825hrs Charlie Company we are at the Night defense Position at BS726447. At 2000hrs Charlie Company the 06 and 26 elements are in location at BS725452 and BS722449 respectively. At 2100hrs Charlie Company the 06 element is at BS725452 and the 26 element is at BS722449. Charlie Company 1-20 infantry request Dust Off for Charlie Company 26th Engineers which reports 2LT Thomas S. Brooks, SSGT Donald F. Deputy, PFC Ralph M. Williams, SP4 Bobby M. Griffis, PFC James R. Roller and PFC Ralph M. Williams where evac to B 23rd Medical or the 91st Evac.
Delta Company

At 1025hrs Delta Company snakes have closed on LZ Liz and continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1855hrs Delta Company reports the 25 element is in location at grid BS746421, the 26 element is at BS764436, the 06 element is at BS769438 and the 43 element is at BS772441. Delta Company reports the following casualties SGT Robert J. Hatten and PFC Dennis B. Sperry where evac to 91st Evac Hospital.
Echo Company
January 2, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0700hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fires 10, Observed Missions 4 for a total expended 77 HE and 26 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0913hrs Recon Platoon we are located at BS755395. At 1250hrs Recon we are in out Day Logger at BS758402 and at 1250hrs our Night Defense Position is at BS754403. Tomorrow we will move to LZ Liz. At 1310hrs today movement we will go from our Night Defense Position to BS758390 1, BS753395 2, BS754398 3, and to our Day Logger at BS758402. At 1857hrs Recon we are in our Night Defense Position is at BS754403.
