Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0010hrs IOS sighted 1 Light stationary, at grid 784509. We engaged the target with 4 HE of 155 artillery. At 0035hrs Radar sighted 5 to 6 stationary personnel at grid 760447. Negative clearance was given due to the proximity of Charlie Company. At 0045hrs IOS sighted 2 stationary lights at grid 773457. Negative clearance was given due to the proximity of Alpha Company. At 0050hrs IOS sighted 1 or more personnel with a flashlight at grid 797766. Negative clearance due to the proximity of Recon. At 0115hrs TMF detected a metal target at grid 746370, we engaged it with 20 HE of 105 artillery. At 0125hrs Radar sighted 7 to 8 personnel, stationary at grid 750447. We engaged with 18 HE of 4.2 mortar. At 0130hrs IOS sighted 2 lights in the mountains at grid 716497. We engaged with 12 HE of 155 artillery. At 0250hrs Radar sighted 30 to 35 stationary personnel at grid 804434, we engaged with 60 HE and 5 firecracker rounds of 105 Artillery. At 0435hrs Radar sighted 6 to 8 stationary personnel at grid 783494, we engaged with 12 HE of 155 artillery. At 0735hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC to Bravo Company have the 57 element check out grid 804434 on their sweep today. Radar sighted 30 to 35 personnel at 0250hrs and fired on them with 105 Artillery. At 0812hrs 1-20 Infantry the Battalion Commander left LZ Liz on a Visual Recon and returned at 0930hrs. At 0845hrs To Brigade From 1-20 Infantry we requests approval for Clear and Sweep Operations on the following targets: Target 10 from 702440 to 704443 priority2, Target 11 from 715449 to 717452 priority 1, Target 12 from 723461 to 721465 priority 5, Target 13 from 719471 to 717476 priority 4 and Target 14 from 606478 to 709479 priority 3. At 0936hrs the Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz, was briefed by S-3 and left at 1010hrs. At 1010hrs 26 Engineer the mine sweep of the Access Road is completed. At 1015hrs E Troop reports our present location is at 814423. At 1020hrs Brigade Intelligence from 4th ARVN Regiment, reveals that the 31st Battalion is at 695422 and they will attack LZ Liz and LZ Max tonight by 21 NVA and the 120th Main Force Monteyards. At 1128hrs Brigade does S2 have a copy of combat Lessons learned USAEV, dated 10 January 1970? 8 copies are in to distribution. At 1215hrs 1-20 Infantry we request Warlords check out 695422. We have Intelligence from the 4 ARVN through Brigade that the 21st Battalion is there. Warlords are on a contact mission now and will try to check it out later today. At 1400hrs Utility Dolphin 186 is on station and broke station at 1525hrs. At 1630hrs 1-20 Infantry Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz, was briefed by the Battalion Commander and left at 1655hrs. At 1650hrs All Bunkers are in good condition and all have pump bobs, Charlie Company inspected by CPT Whitaker, 1-82 Artillery by 1SGT Doss, HHC by CPT Holmes and SGT Talimino. At 1702hrs 1-20 Infantry The Battalion Commander departed for Alpha Company and returned at 1805hrs. At 1815hrs Brigade Intelligence reveals there are about 200 NVA at grid 797480. An additional intelligence message will be called in within the hour but this message was the most important, C-3 ratings. At 1835hrs Brigade MACV locations are 790419, 794409, 759465, 789425, 773449 and 778452. Day ambushes are at 771446 and 783445. At 1845hrs 1-20 Infantry AJAX, Alpha 122, Bravo 100, Charlie 105, Delta 105, Recon 26, 4.2 64, Base Defense 25 and south OP, At 1925hrs Major Thurgood informed Major Neilson that Command and Control Helicopter would be on station at 0645hrs to 0800hrs. Then would be lost at 0800hrs to 1145hrs and will be on station again until 1800hrs. Utility will be on station from 1400hrs to 1600hrs Date February 3, 1971. At 1950hrs Radar sighted 3 to 4 personnel moving to the southeast at grid 715494. We engaged with 8" from LZ Bronco and lost the target. At 2030hrs Radar sighted 3 to 4 stationary personnel at grid 726409 and we engaged with 6 HE of 105 artillery. At 2100hrs Radar sighted 4 to 5 stationary personnel at grid 766412 and we engaged with 3 HE 4.2 mortar rounds. At 2155hrs Radar sighted 3 to 5 stationary personnel at grid 734442 and we engaged with 3 HE of 4.2 mortar rounds.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. PFC CHARLES EDWARD DIAMOND IS LISTED AS KIA (DIED OF WOUNDS see Alpha Company 2/2/70).
Alpha Company

At 0630hrs Alpha Company the 53 and 54 elements have closed on 754457 and by 0700hrs Alpha report all snakes have closed on 754457. At 1420hrs Alpha Company we picked up one Vietnamese detainee about 18 years and white shirt and dark shorts, no ID, with two Vietnamese females trying to hide, and we turn him to Military Intelligence outside our Day Logger position at 754457. At 1435hrs Alpha Company we Request an Urgent Dust Off for three US with multiple frag wounds to the body. A Vietnamese child appears to have thrown a grenade into the Day Logger, we have two Vietnamese children age 8-10, detained now. Name of WIA Smith, W., Guillion and Diamond, Utility made Dust Off at 1439. Guillien and Diamond are now KIA. The two children turned into to Military Intelligence for questioning. Our Night Defense Position at grid 753452 with multiple ambushes tonight. PFC JOHN DAVID GUILLON AND CHARLES EDWARD DIAMOND FROM HEADQUARTER COMPANY IS LISTED AS KHA (BOTH DIE FROM WOUNDS). Charlie Company reports PFC Walter N. Smith was evac to 312th Evac Hospital at 1435hrs with frag wounds. At 1740hrs Alpha Company our Night Defense Position for tonight is at 753452. At 1835hrs Alpha Company reports we are in our Night Defense Position. At 1840hrs Alpha Company all snakes are in their locations 53 at 746462, 54 at 763458, 55 at 767449, 93 at 711458, 94 at 735451 and the 94 snake at 739465.
Bravo Company
February 2, 1970
At 0530hrs Bravo Company the 66 element has closed on 783433 and at 0625hrs Bravo Company the Ranger has closed on 783433 and 55 element closed on 0702hrs. At 0735hrs 1-20 Infantry to Bravo Company 57 element check out grid 804434 on their sweep today and At 0750hrs 1-20 Infantry to Bravo Company 26 element is providing security for Road paving and the 57 element will move at 1000hrs. Beside sweeps Bravo Company is using some daylight snakes, and patrolling in their Area of Operations. At 0935hrs Bravo Company the 96 and 98 snakes have closed on 771461. At 0940hrs Bravo Company the 96 patrol is moving to 784444.
At 1011hrs Bravo Company the 63 element is at 804386 and the 54 element is sweeping the grid 802431. At 1200hrs Bravo Company the 54 element has closed on 783433. At 1401hrs Bravo Company the 66 snake is at 794408 and reports the 65 snake is at 786427 at 1500hrs. At 1755hrs Bravo Company reports 80 VC last night moved down the 515 highway to access across highway 1 into Van Troung. We think they may move to LZ Bronco, Twin Ville or elsewhere tonight. The exact location is not known. At 1840hrs Bravo Company 97 element is moving to 766455 on their clearing patrol. At 1915hrs Bravo Company the 66 element has closed on 771461. At 1945hrs Bravo Company reports the 56 element is moving to 789432 and the 65 element is at 768427. At 2025hrs Bravo Company reports 56 snake at 789432 and 95 snake at 774453.
Charlie Company

At 0910hrs Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and reports all snakes have closed on LZ Liz. At 1400hrs Charlie Company we are moving off Liz toward grid 735415. At 2020hrs Charlie Company 57 snake at 717424, 55 snake at 718426, 96 snake at 768403, the 97 snake is at 751409, the 95 snake is at 759405, the 66 snake at 747515, the 74 snake at 728419 and 65 snake is at 743415.
Delta Company

At 0703hrs Delta Company all snakes have closed on their respective locations. At 0805hrs Delta Company 63, 23 and 92 elements are moving to link up with the main unit. At 0830hrs Delta Company we are moving our Day Logger to LZ Liz. At 1400hrs with Charlie moving off of LZ Liz Delta Company has taken over the Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 2000hrs all snakes are in location 54 at 755448, 55 at 736438, the 94 at 767437 and 64 at 771440.
Echo Company
February 2, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0800hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting fires 8, Observed Missions 6 for a total of 66 HE, 4 WP and 29 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 1100hrs Recon Platoon we are at 805474. At 1310hrs Recon Platoon request a Priority Dust Off for 1 VC with multiple gunshot wounds of the leg. The VC had in his possession 1 AK47 with a magazine, 2 M26 grenades, 1 M67 grenade, 1 case compass, 1 pistol belt, and some documents. We also found about 10 pounds of some kind of explosives that sappers use. We fired on them with negative results. Dust Off completed at 1325hrs at grid 801458. At 1410hrs Recon Platoon reports location is at 804459. At 1817hrs Recon Platoon reports present location is at 816427, we have 1 APC broke down at this location. We will keep you informed on the situation, we also report we have destroyed 7 to 8 camouflaged bunkers and hootches, 300 meters south of the same grid.
