Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0656hrs TMF the report Fire Mission at 0630hrs String 76 was activated on a stationary target with negative metal confirmation. They shot 16 VT rounds 105 Artillery at grid BS781357. At 1057hrs TMF Fire Mission time 1049hrs String 76 was activated on undetermined personnel, with negative clearance because of RD Zone. At 1245hrs 1-20 Infantry in the move of the Jump Command Post from LZ Liz and Bud Pad the PZ are as follows 1st PZ 0800hrs Recon Platoon, 2nd PZ 0852hrs 4.2 and Command Post, 3rd PZ 0910hrs Conex, 4th PZ 0930 Conex, 5 PZ 1003hrs 1 Conex. The doors open dropping 1 artillery radio, pack and 1 case of beer, 6 PZ was at 1045hrs Dud Pad, 7th PZ at 1045hrs Bud Pad, 8th PZ at 1105hrs Bud Pad and 9th PZ at 1125hrs Bud pad. The Command Post was operational at 1230hrs The LZ was 754632 and all were cold. At 1500hrs MACV Mo Duc at BS752554 and BS751560 they found an unknown amount of rice ˝ polished, 2 tons were already bagged, 400 bags requested from Brigade S-5 to go out. These people are all Vietnamese, with 1 Chieu Hoi with AK47. The 168 RF Platoon got the Chieu Hoi with AK47, so far a total of 10 tons of rice was found. At 1620hrs Intelligence Mo Duc and Duc Pho will be subject to attack by fire ground attack in the next few nights. At 1900hrs Brigade the Utility Bird on station 1230hrs to 1530hrs and the LOH was on station 0800hrs to 0900hrs. At 1910hrs E Troop inserted to the east in area 8 vehicles 1/2 are broken down. Night Defense Position tonight and will move tomorrow have had many mechanical troubles. At 1925hrs E Troop 70 they are in their Night Defense Position and will move out at 0630hrs Night Defense Position is at BS779570. At 2030hrs MACV Mo Duc obtained approximately 3 tons of rice and bagged it all. Located this in 14 caches 4’ by 6’ by 3’, Chieu Hoi says 28 more such caches exist, will check out tomorrow, RF securing the area, Chieu Hoi now with Hamlet Chief. At 2120hrs Forward TOC at BS757643 received from BS751648 3 60mm mortar rounds, hit about 200 meters outside the perimeter negative casualties reacted with counter mortar fire. Legend: 1st Platoon 52-57, 2nd Platoon 34-39, 3rd Platoon 72-77, 4th Platoon 42-47 and Commanding Officer -70.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company

At 0555hrs Alpha Company the 52 and 53 element is moving out to BS725610. At 0704hrs Alpha Company the 52 and 53 elements have closed on Day Logger at BS727617. They searched the preplanned area, no inhabited Ville, the area is heavily booby trap. The 74 element closed their Day Ambush at BS725627. At 0825hrs Alpha Company the 75 element has closed on the Day Ambush at BS720613. At 1800hrs Alpha Company the 32 element is moving out to BS742612. At 1830hrs Alpha Company the 52 element received small amount of fire from semi-automatic weapon. Saw 3 personnel in green with weapons, 500 meters away, evaded to northwest. Also saw 3 more personnel at BS7461, they evaded to a Ville, checking out area now. Found one straw hat with hole through the top of it, negative otherwise. At 2020hrs.Alpha Company 74 is at BS733627 and 75 at BS717582.
Bravo Company

Bravo Company continued their joint Operations with PF and RF units on their Hamlet Pacification and security of Highway 1. At 0639hrs Bravo Company at BS681601 an Urgent Dust Off was called for 1 PF hit by a booby trap. His right foot was blown off along with 2 fingers and 2 frag wounds to the head. He stepped on a M14 mine. The 56 element was in Day Logger he was from PF 144 Platoon, Dust Off completed at BS0659hrs. At 0729hrs Bravo Company the 74 element is moving to BS745573 and the 54 element is moving to BS746575. At 1103hrs Bravo Company the 54 element is at checkpoint # 4. At 1730hrs Bravo Company the 36 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS725628. The 56 element has closed at BS747666. At 1831hrs Bravo Company the 36 element is moving out to BS724634 and the 56 element is moving out to BS682606. SGT ROY WAYNE MARLATT LISTED AS KHA Died of wounds (See July 22, 1970 for information).
Charlie Company

At 0445hrs Charlie Company the 53 element is moving out. At 0655hrs Charlie Company the 75 element is moving out to BS760561, the 76 element is moving out to grid BS760569. Charlie Company continued their saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0740hrs Charlie Company the 52 Day Logger is at BS750574 and the 70 Day Logger is at BS762565. At 0820 Charlie Company 56 element has one US hit a trip wire type booby tap, hand frag at BS766567, walking through a hedgerow #123 had injuries to his feet and lower legs. Charlie Company at 0924hrs requested an Urgent Dust Off for 1 PF who step on booby trap near a wood line at BS765567. He was from the 145 PF Platoon completed at 0940hrs. At 1204hrs Charlie Company E Troop and ˝ 72 element linking up with their 52 element, and other ˝ 72 element is in tow to LZ Dragon with bad vehicle. Charlie Company engaged 3 VC with negative finding. At 1915hrs Charlie Company at BS759571 the 53 patrol while moving out saw 3 personnel with packs and weapons, Blue shirts and no shirts moving to the east 500 meters away. Engaged, 2 went to the northwest and 1 to the southwest, checked out the area with negative. At 1930hrs Charlie Company reports their Night Defense Position at BS767566 with multiply ambushes in position. At 2100hrs Charlie Company 53 elements spotted 25 personnel with packs leaving a Ville, (think it was a meeting) moving to the north into a wood line. They were seen by the 53 element coming from this Ville at BS770582 highly vegetation area so couldn’t see any weapons or clothing, male and female dressed in all black negative findings. SGT Clarence J. Bean was evac to the 27 Surgical at 0830hrs with multiple frag wounds to both legs and right arm.

Echo Company
July 29, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Scheduled Fires 10 for a total expended of 8 HE and 13 Illumination. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry. At 0800hrs Recon Platoon is Combat Assault to provide security for the Jump Command Post at LZ BS754632. At 1615hrs Echo Company at BS754642 1 US (King), was (routine) Dusted Off he was hit on the head by a shovel while filling sands bags.
