Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 29, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Vanguard and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0720hrs S-4 Upright 561 (174 Aviation) is on station for re supply tail # 651. At 1333hrs Bravo request an Urgent Dust Off for 1 US WIA relayed to 11 Brigade at 1334hrs Dust Off completed at 1409hrs by (Dust Off 59). At 1730hrs S-4 Resupply Bird Upright 561 released. At 2003hrs Alpha Company at BS577433 had a trip flare go off on the west side of the perimeter surrounding LZ Vanguard, immediately the 3 bunkers closest to the area engaged the area with small arms fire, Individual was wounded as he has getting into his bunker. At this time it has been unable to determine if the wounds is the clause of incoming or a round from 1 of the other bunkers. The clause of the wound should be determined by the surgeon report Dust Off requested and was completed at 2053hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 59, 2nd Platoon 56, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 97 and CO-29.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai. PFC Stephen J. Delaney was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Alpha Company
August 29, 1971

At 0811hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon on move to Patrol Base and 3rd Platoon is on move to Patrol Base vicinity BS675549. At 0842hrs Alpha Company Command Post, 2nd Platoon and 4th Platoon is moving to Patrol base at BS683530. At 0904hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS687824 had a Dust Off for Line #C9423, booby trap of 1 can of Petra, trip wire off the ground on a trail. Pack has frag wounds to his leg and hand. In good condition the Dust Off by Raffle 66 in Primo 3. At 1043hrs Alpha Company Urgent Dust Off at grid BS669539, Booby Trap can of Petra with trip wire approximately knee high, multiple frag wounds to legs and lower back, Dust Off completed at 1054hrs. At 1149hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon in Patrol Base vicinity BS687527. At 1622hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 5, vicinity BS669527, 1st Platoon is at checkpoint 4 at BS681517 and the 2nd Platoon is at checkpoint 2 at BS680527. At 1941hrs Alpha Company locations Command Post, 2nd and 4th Platoon in their Night Defense Position at BS682525, 2nd Platoon ambush BS679520, 3rd Platoon ambush is at grid BS669534, and 1st Platoon is at grid BS677508 in their Night Defense Position. Alpha Company reports the following SP4 Larry L. Croom and PFC John F. Brady where attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Bravo Company
August 29, 1971

At 0820rhs Bravo Company moved into their Patrol Base at BS637434 and at 0845hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon is moving to BS634437. At 0930hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon is moving to BS634443 and at 1110hrs 1st Platoon and 2nd Platoon closed on BS637434. At 1330hrs Bravo Company at BS637434 while in their Patrol Base a medic hit a booby trap it was Chi Com grenade with a trip wire approximately 6" high across the trails with results 1 US Wound with multiple frag wounds to the legs. At 1333hrs Bravo Company requests an urgent Dust Off for 1 US WHA relayed to the 11th Brigade and at 1334hrs Dust Off completed at 1409hrs Dust Off # 59. At 1937hrs Bravo Company has moved into their Night Defense Position at BS634445.

 

Charlie Company
August 29, 1971

At 0722hrs Charlie Company is moving to Patrol Base at BS637432. At 1540hrs 1st Platoon closed on location at BS648414. At 1958hrs Charlie Company moved into their Night Defense Position at BS641431and with 1st Platoon ambush at BS644434.

 

Delta Company
August 29, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Vanguard and at 1415hrs 2nd Platoon Patrol moving to BS581433 and closed at 1440hrs and then at 1450hrs BS587434 and by 1600hrs they where at BS588437 and then closed back on LZ Vanguard at 1745hrs.

 

Echo Company
August 29, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
