Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 29, 1969
Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0330hrs 1-20 Infantry Radar picked up 4-5 personnel moving at grid BS741596 fired Artillery with the results 3 secondary explosions. At 0605hrs Battalion Command Message to units "Have Back Haul Ready for Utility". At 1030hrs 39 Engineer at BS786405 reports Civilian bus detonate unknown type mine with results 15 Vietnamese Civilian KIA and 3 Vietnamese civilian WIA and evac passed on to G-5. At 0850hrs FAC Helix 31, have a Air Strike going into BS741436. Due to heavy smoke have no Bomb Damage Assessment. At 1700hrs 1-20 Infantry at 1700hrs 29 August relieved of requirement to keep a company on 30 minute standby. At 1705hrs S-3 advised Charlie Company, who was on standby that he was relieved of above requirement. At 1820hrs S-3 1-20 Infantry made coordination with Charlie Company 39th Engineers. At 2030hrs LZ Liz Delta Company reports Bunker 7 reports movement to their front engaging with Quad 50. At 2040hrs Delta Company Bunker 7 reports having movement to their front, sensors 1 and 2 picked up crawling movement and engaged with Quad 50.
Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion. At 1059hrs Delta Company 19 Engineer at BS795405 North mine sweep found 2 mines have pressure firing device, destroyed road is passable (Info only). At 1534hrs Delta Company 19 Engine at BS840330 while working on bridge 398, received 15 to 25 rounds automatic weapons fire from west side of road with results negative casualties of damage and continued to work (info Only).
Alpha Company
August 29, 1969
At 1545hrs, Alpha Company reports it’s new location vicinity BS720579. At 2245hrs Alpha Company my northern OP spotted 4-5 personnel north of their location. Regard 20 checked with Brigade to make sure these people, wasn’t a ARVN patrol. Clearance was given to fire and they have a M-60 trained on area. At 2250hrs golf called 18, these people were PF and will move back to the compound.
Bravo Company
August 29, 1969
At 0615hrs Bravo Company the 88 element has closed on Bridge and the 49 element has left Night Defense Position for a Recon in Force sweep. At 0910hrs Bravo Company at their Day Logger BS774459 and the 84 element with little people picks up 2 VCS at grid BS777440 and the PF turned the VCS over to their high authority. At 1220hrs in regards to the 2 VC that the 49 element shot while making search through the Ville they talked with the people in the Ville and said 1 VC came in the Ville and died other one was badly wounded. All the rice they were carrying was going to the area that the VC was carrying was going to the area that Bravo will Condon and Search tomorrow. At 1250hrs Bravo Company 44 came across 3 males VC and 1 female VCS. The males evaded and engaged with small arms fire, killing one in back shorts, age 20-22, other VC jumped into a hole put crating charge in hole with results 1 VC KIA and the third VC is wounded and evaded successfully. Have 2 US trackers following blood trails. At 1311hrs Bravo Company requested an Urgent Dust Off for 1 US with multiple frag wounds, he was with the 44 element checking out holes. When they KIA a VC and tripped off booby trap (the man died 1 US KHA (Dykes) complete Dust Off 1326hrs. At 1800hrs Bravo Company the 1 VCS with no ID, about 30 of age sending to Military Intelligence and at 2009hrs moved into their Night Defense Position. PFC MONTE DALE DYKES LISTED AS KHA.
Charlie Company
August 29, 1969
At 0704hrs Charlie Company reports all elements closed on Night Defense Position before moving out to Day Logger BS727452 closed at 0755hrs. The Charlie Company the 44 and 66 elements are moving out on Recon in Force patrols. The Charlie 44 and 66 elements at BS725456 found a trail with fresh boot tracks, followed trail found a camp area with warm camp fires, NVA type pith helmet. At 1020hrs Charlie Company 44 at BS724458 found 2 more NVA hats, blasting caps, and about 300 pounds of rice and several areas that looks like a new campsite. At 1400hrs summary of finding of Recon in Force 44 element at BS724458: found 20 tunnels some of them up to 30’ deep, warm campfires, 10 roasted ducks, small quantities of rice and NVA boot tracks. Possible 40 to 70 personnel in the area and all elements closed on the Day Logger. At 1945hrs Charlie Company moved into our Night Defense Position with two snakes out.
Delta Company
August 29, 1969
Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1350hrs Delta Company request routine Dust Off for possible malaria SGT Mach Franks. Delta Company Bunker 7 reports movement to their front engaging with Q-50, at 2030hrs and at 2040hrs Sensor pick-up crawling movement 2040hrs again engaged again with Q 50.
Echo Company
August 29, 1969
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. 4.2 Platoon reports Defense Targets 3 Schedule Missions 20, Observe Missions 3 total expend 146 HE, 3 WP rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry.
