Headquarters and Headquarter Company
February 28, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0400hrs 1-20 Infantry Radar at 1937hrs sighted 20 to 25 personnel moving east at BS738440 and engaged with 3 HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar and at 2048hrs 10 to 15 personnel were sighted moving southwest at grid BS724435 and engaged with 10 HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar. At 2100hrs TMF sighted 4 stationary personnel at 791467 and engaged with 12 HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar. At 2147hrs 5 to 7 personnel were sighted moving southeast at BS791467 with negative clearance and Delta Company was informed. At 2205hrs 5 to 7 stationary personnel were spotted at BS768442 and engaged with Charlie Company 81mm mortars. At 2330hrs PPS-5 spotted 4 to 5 personnel moving southwest at BS741432 an engaged with 9 HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar. At 0030hrs 10 to 12 stationary personnel were sighted at BS723439 where engaged with 12 HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar and at 0330hrs 7 to 8 stationary personnel were sighted at BS733406 and engaged with 6 HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar. At 0430hrs 7 to 8 stationary personnel were sighted at BS748447 and engaged with 9 HE rounds HE rounds of 4.2 Mortar. At 0505hrs Radar sighted 10 to 12 personnel at BS73304178 and engaged with 12 HE VT rounds Artillery. At 0535hrs Radar sighted 7-8 stationary personnel at BS72604164 and engaged with 4 firecracker rounds of Artillery 105mm. At 1035hrs 1-20 Infantry the Division Commander has arrived at LZ Liz and left at 1054hrs. At 1411hrs The Battalion Commander is leaving LZ Liz and returned at 1500hrs. At 1507hrs 1-20 Infantry Assistant Division Commander arrived at LZ Liz and left at 1526hrs. At 1524hrs 1-20 Infantry the Battalion Commander arrived at LZ Liz and left at 1645hrs.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1405hrs 1-20 Infantry Suspended 4.2 Illumination, 5535 lot W RD-56, must be turned in.

 

Alpha Company
February 28, 1970

At 0640hrs Alpha Company 01 element requests an Urgent Dust Off for 2 US one KIA and one slight wound to the foot and head from rifle fire. The 04 element got slightly ahead of the 01 element and the point man for 01 element challenged the 04 element no answer. The 01 element open fired believing the element was VC. The Dust off was complete at 0615hrs.Names White WIA and Vaillancourt KIA grid BS788382. This was a sweeping operation in their Area of Operation. At 0830hrs a 21 found one dud 155 round at BS781363 and blew it in place. At 1810hrs we have closed on our Night Defense Position at BS770367 and our snake locations 05 BS775354, 25 BS753366 and the 65 BS760365. Alpha Company reports PFC EDWARD JOHN VAILLANCOURT LISTED AS KIA. Charlie Company reports that PFC Norman E. Carlson (gunshot wounds to left foot and head) was evac to the 27 Evac.

 

Bravo Company
February 28, 1970

At 0455hrs Bravo Company the 21 element is moving to BS788440 and 22 is moving to BS800430 and 01 element is moving to BS807418. At 0535hrs the 05 element is moving to BS800425, and the 61 element is moving to BS780460. At 0540hrs the 65 element is moving to BS776467 and 64 is moving to BS783452. At 0708hrs Bravo Company the 65 element spotted 6 VC at BS7447 and the 65 element is pursuing them at this time and at 0720hrs grid BS783472 my 65 element has one VC KIA approximately 24 years old, wearing black pajamas, a gray bush hat and sandals. He had a US Carbine, one US pistol belt with a M26 grenade and one US flashlight along with some documents. The VC KIA was a local resident and the RF/PF said he spent the night in Mo Duc and was proceeding toward the Gaza Strip. At 0835hrs Bravo Company 65 element while on their sweep found one bunker in an enemy location at BS778462. A grenade was thrown in the bunker after calling for anyone inside to come out, the results was 1 female VC WIA grid BS778462. Bravo Company did not request Dust Off until 0945hrs, because at first they believed she was a KIA and when they found her alive they call for the Dust Off. At 0853hrs the 06 element picked up 5 male detainees at grid BS817397 ages 35 to 55 and they were in a group and one tried to evade and was caught all will be turned into MACV. Later after questioning 4 were cut lose by RF/PF and they still have one they fell is VC. At 2150hrs Bravo Company 61 element at the Twin Ville received 8-10 rounds of small arms fire from their northeast with negative casualties or damage. We are putting in Artillery and 81mm on the suspected enemy location at BS778445.

 

Charlie Company
February 28, 1970

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1110hrs Charlie Company all snakes have closed on LZ Liz. At 2215hrs Charlie Company the 65 snake is at BS744465, the 25 is at BS746472, the 24 is at BS745468, 65a is at BS746460 and 04 and sub elements are roving on the access road.

 

Delta Company
February 28, 1970

At 0643hrs Delta Company all elements are moving out on their sweep to the west. At 0810hrs Delta Company 24 has picked up one Vietnamese female with no ID at BS793473. She was 30 to 35 of age and wore clean black pajamas and plaid blouse, she was found in a hedgerow. At 0915hrs Delta Company was instructed to have their snakes between BS787479 to BS826416. At 0940hrs Delta Company 03 element found 1 dud 155mm round and one dud 105 round. We request 10 blocks of C-4 with blasting caps and time fuse to blow them. At 1005hrs Delta Company all elements are sweeping back at this time, upon completion of their sweep, they will split into 3 Day Loggers position. At 1112hrs vicinity BS790473 Delta Company 24 picked up 2 detainee one female, age 46 with no ID, black pajamas and brown top, one14, no ID wearing a blue shirt and green shorts. Delta Company reports PFC Marcos Velez (treated at battalion aid with frag wound left arm).

 

Echo Company
February 28, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0645hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fires 5 and Observed Mission 7, Unobserved Mission 1 for a total expended 74 HE, 15 Illumination and 15 C/S rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon reports their location at Chu Lai for their Stand Down. Echo Company reports SGT Terry L. Hensley evac to 91 Evac (serious sick non hostile LOYAL).
