Headquarters and Headquarter Company
December 28, 1969

Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0920hrs 26th Engineer report our D7 Bull dossier had M-16 holes in the gas tank but they did not go all the way through. Also there were was holes in the diesel billet and all the fuel leaked out, holes in the trailer, holes in the oil cans and all the oil leaked out. This equipment was at the bottom of LZ Liz and believed to be damaged by fire from Bunker 16 or 17. At 1030hrs the Brigade Commanding Officer arrived and was briefed by the S-3 and Battalion Commander, he departed at 1100hrs. At 1055hrs Brigade to 1-20 Infantry was notified that Charlie Company 4-21 Infantry will be moving from their present location BS785373 to Highway 1 (Red Ball). They will be moving along the 4-21 and 1-20 Infantry boundary lines. At 1130hrs The Command Officer arrived and was briefed by the S-3 and Battalion Commander, and departure was at 1116hrs. At 1150hrs 1-20 Infantry Colonel Fischer departed LZ Liz for Commanders Call at brigade Headquarters at LZ Bronco. At 1312hrs 1-20 Infantry at LZ Liz routine Dust Off requested for 1 US with possible malaria. The man’s name is Francis Evon and has a temp of 105 and was completed at 1415hrs. At 1300hrs Helix FAC we put in WP rockets on a suspected supply point a grid BS735421. We also spotted personnel dressed in white, driving cows at grid BS718428. 1-20 Infantry Bunker Report all bunkers are OK and have plumb bobs, Charlie Company inspected by CPT Donovan, HHC by CPT Holmes, Artillery SGT Thomas and rear by LT Boney (44 is being repaired). At 1500hrs AJAX Alpha Company 98, Bravo Company 122, Charlie Company 106, Delta Company 96, Recon Platoon at 27, and 4.2 25. At 1515hrs 1-20 Infantry Recon Platoon Little John element was informed that the ARVN that they are with will bring the Little John element to LZ Liz on 29 December 1969. At 1706hrs LIC Fischer returned to LZ Liz at 1720hrs. 1-20 Infantry we request an AO Extension for the 4th ARVN Regiment for BS7248, BS7249, BS7448 and BS7449, for the period of 1745hrs to 2100hrs on 28 December 69. We are to Recon in Force Operations to seek out one platoon of VC who were sighted at BS730477 and the Extension was approved by CPT McNeil at 1805hrs.

Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion. At 0745hrs 1-20 Infantry to all Units lot number MA 1117 and PA 31-2 as possible defective lots of hand grenades with short fuses (baseball). Alpha Company and Recon have hand grenades which are of these lots, and we will be sending them in.

 

Alpha Company
December 28, 1969

At 0830hrs Alpha Company 72 element Command Post are moving out from the Night Defense Position at BS828422. At 1909hrs Alpha Company the 72, 99 and Command Post are at BS8284742, the 22 element is at BS815435 and the 23 element is at BS817429. At 1946 the 82 element is at BS833405, the 12 element is at BS820425, the 13 element is at BS828418 and the 83 element is at BS827410.

 

Bravo Company
December 28, 1969

At 0645hrs Bravo Company the 14 element is moving back to the North Bridge at BS771461 and closed at 0710hrs. At 0810hrs Bravo Company the 86 element is located at BS789417 and the 93 element is at BS794380. At 0825hrs Bravo Company the 13 element is moving to BS762450 and the 17 element is moving to BS765442. At 1355hrs Bravo Company the 85 element reported that the PF got 2 Chieu Hoi last night. The PF refused to let the 85 element participated in the Chieu Hoi the PF took the two Chieu Hoi to Duc Pho. At 1400hrs Bravo Company we have one Chieu Hoi who walked into the main Command Post (AJAX 122). He says he was with the C-219 from Oct 63 to April 64. He says 20 VC they have a AK 47, and his name is Nguyen Sau and is 40 years old, from the village of Van Thronng. At 1600hrs Bravo Company (LATE ENTRY): at BS791446 Reference DJF entries #70, #71 and #72 26 December 1969. Engaged enemy found to be wearing complete ARVIN uniforms also had scarves around their necks similar to friendly units. They were carrying AK-47 and B-40 rocket and they had radio to monitor friendly frequencies.

 

Charlie Company
December 28, 1969

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0840hrs Charlie Company the 26 and 15 elements have closed on LZ Liz. At 1020hrs Charlie Company the 84 element has closed on LZ Liz. At 1330hrs one US with possible malaria, the man name is Francis Evon has a temp of 105 degrees, pick up site LZ Liz completed at 1415hrs (Believe it is PFC Francis Evon). At 0926hrs Charlie Company the 26 element is at BS776444, the 14 element is at BS764436 and the 86 element is at BS770448.

 

Delta Company
December 28, 1969

At 0445hrs Delta Company the 14 element has left their location and will sweep to BS718438 at 0530hrs the 14 element has completed their sweep and has closed on BS725446. At 0925hrs Delta has reached the Day Logger at BS741469 and is prepared to accept resupply. At 1736hrs spotted a platoon size element of VC with weapons in the vicinity of BS730477 and we are attempting to get on line and engage. Report that after we had spotted the VC they caught sight of us and started to run to the ridgeline and we opened fire and gave chase. We lost them on the ridgeline at BS730478. At 1824hrs we are on the northern crest of the ridge which we lost sight of the VC, we observed the Artillery Fire with negative sighting. At 2010hrs Delta Company after sweeping the area where we spotted the VC, we are now at our Night Defense Position at BS731471 with the 24 snake is at BS736474 and the 84 snake at BS728466.

 

Echo Company
December 28, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0627hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fires 14, Observed Mission 1 and Unobserved Mission 1 for a total expended 62 HE and 2 WP rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0950hrs Recon Platoon reports one element of ARVN at Little John location have been extracted. There are 3 more ARVN elements and one US element left and at 1030hrs the remainder, extraction of Recon and ARVN units 1st PZ 1047hrs and last LZ 1121hrs to LZ Liz. At 1140hrs Recon Platoon was insertion of the ARVN, 1st PZ LZ Liz at 1140hrs and last LZ at 1145hrs vicinity of grid BS819449. At 1515hrs 1-20 Infantry Recon Platoon Little John element was informed that the ARVN that they are with will bring the Little John element to LZ Liz on 29 December 1969. At 1620hrs Recon Platoon we are just outside the perimeter wire of LZ Liz and heading for grid BS759414. At 1645hrs Little John our Night Defense with the ARVN will remain the same as last night at BS819449. ARVN snakes are at BS823451, BS811442, BS805447 and BS803454. At 1834hrs Little John is in their Night Defense Position with ARVN moving to their, with one additional position at grid BS807462.
